hi, very new to photography having purchased a Nikon D40 just last week.

So been hunting around for a Tripod & after reading up that its best to get separates I managed to find a 055CB for £51 which seemed a bit of a bargain so I bought it. What the cheapest head I could put on to use with my D40 & kit lens would the 484RC2 be OK?

Thanks, I have a feeling this new hobby is going to get very expensive.

Id go with the 488 CR2 if I were you... its as strong as an ox... you may find hte 484 a bit flimsy with a nice strong tripod like the 055.

I was hoping to keep the cost down (& weight), only planned only spending £50 in total but after reading the forums got a bit carried away. Do you not think the 484 would be strong enough for just the D40 & kit lens?

Expensive but the geared head is great, go for the junior model, sorry can't give more as off to the US at 0600 tomorrow.

I agree with Janice, I too have a 488RC2 nice and strong will last for ever so no need to upgrade later on.

You got a real bargain on the legs, so you can splash a out little on a nice head. As said elsewhere in forum, if you value your equipment don't scrimp on support.

I've got two 488 RC 's.....the second one because the first one's broken.....

Seriously, despite being broken it still works perfectly and I bought the second one in a rash moment.

I can recommend the 804RC2 (three-way pan/tilt). Got mine as part of a deal with the 055PROB from http://www.morrisphoto.co.uk a few months ago

I've got the 488 and 804 and I find the 488 much more versatile. If I was to get another 3-way head I'd get a geared one.

It really depends on what you want to shoot. If it's Landscapes I'd recomend a 3-way. If it's portraits and general use I'd recomend a ball head.

For kit lens and the 484RC2 will be OK. I have this on my monopod and a 488RC2 on my 190XPROB tripod.

I'm With DF another vote for the 322rc2 can be used horizontally ( normal) or a quick tweek and it can be used vertically like a joy stick

Went with a 484RC2 for £34 in the end, also ordered a Raynox 202 today. Hopefully will all arrive tomorrow so I can have a play the weekend.
