Hi all,
Got bored doing my CV this afternoon, so took a drive up onto the tops nearby (the ridge that Emley Moor Mast sits on if anyone is interested). I stopped on a road on the way to the mast, and took the following shot. The colour version looked uninspiring, but a bit of fiddling with Photoshop produced something im quite happy with.

What do you think?

Cold. Which I know it was today :)

I like it :) Lot of nice views around that area, and some stunners from the top of castle hill itself!

Cheers guys. I'd have liked more of a foreground focus point. I got a new polariser today, and went to try it out. The camera seemed to be fighting against it though - any polarising effect I dialed in didn't appear in the final image it seemed. Wondering whether I need to brave manual mode.

Intrigued by what looks like a tower in the distance on the left!?

You also look like you're shooting almost towards the sun (I see a sunspot), I found this was the one time that my polariser hasnt had any effect, if I'm looking to near the light.

Also have you got a dirty lens or sensor? Look at the tallest pole nearest you and go straight up, in the sky there are some dark blobs.

Nit picking aside, I love this, sorry I didn't say earlier. It looks almost frostily cold, and even though there isnt any foreground interest, and this might not work as a typical 'shot' per se, it's the sort of image I do really enjoy looking at.

Marcel, many thanks for the crtique. I was shooting with the sun to my front left - I think this is why the polarisation is much stronger on the right of the picture. There are some sun spots there, and yes, my sensor is very dirty :( My hurricane blower thingy doesn't appear to work as well as it might.

Sammy - the tower is called Castle Hill. Here's some info:

Don't forget that when it comes to darkening blue skies, a polariser has most effect when it's used on an area of sky at around 90 degrees away from the sun, and the effect tends to tail off in intensity either side of that optimum position.

Nice shot. I like the sepia treatment.:)

I agree with that. By the way there is a firework display on Castle Hill on evening of 7th October - supposed to be the biggest in Yorkshire. Many roads will be closed of so lots of walking to get a decent view.

Stepheno if you and some others fancy meeting up for that, then I would be up for it :) I don't mind a bit of a walk, and it's good to have a local guide as it were :D
Besides, I want to get some firework shots this year, but will be taking the family out on Bonfire Night, which limits my chances ;)

Maybe post this in the calendar and the meetup thread?

Sorry to take this thread off topic. :)

As you were.

Thanks for the comments.

Re: the Castle Hill on fire festival. Here's the details on the lovely Kirklees Council website:

Looks like it should be really good. Just hope it won't wee it down!
