View Full Version : ingelton waterfalls
Ok i went on one of those experience seminars for cannon cameras. The course was good and you got a booklet all about shooting waterfalls. The weather didn't go our way so there was contrast issues. :(
Here are some of the results:

Nice series - great location too, most people miss these falls in their hurry to get to the Lake District, well worth the small diversion !!
simon
thanks for the comments, any thoughts on ways to improve the pics?

To be honest I'm currently "learning" how to take waterfall shots myself - just returned from the Brecon Beacons & tried a few.
Bright lighting always makes life difficult as the water can easily overexpose, using a polariser/ND filter helps cut light levels. If the "blurred effect" is required then a tripod is pretty much essential, I managed a few partially-blurred shots hand-held at 1/10sec S/speed but had camera shake below this.
The polariser also removes reflections from the water & enhances the overall colour in the scene
simon
Thanks for that Simonkit, but i kinda meant editing advice on the pics ive taken cos the waterfalls are 300 miles away:( the shots were taken with a polariser and on a tripod.

oh, sorry !!
To be honest I'm not too sure if much needs doing with the first shots - the last one could maybe do with a little more contrast but the scene has quite a range of lighting so you may end up darkening the shadows too much
Hopefully others with more expertise than me with PP will give suggestions
simon
no advice, but just thought i'd say #3 for me, love the rainbow!
thanks guys - simonkit ** right about the last one it needs something cos it looks a bit washed out im just not sure what!

Did you shoot them in RAW by anychance ? - if so you could do 2 conversions, one for shadows/one for highlights & then merge them to give a bit more dynamic range to the shot (bit like HDR). This would probably also give you the chance to boost contrast too
simon
i did i always shoot raw yeah i might give it a go - and u can see the results
Well it looks like it was wel worth the hike to get there. Whether it was worth the injury or not depends on whether you agree that you have to suffer for your art. ;)
I like the close up detail shots the most. I think seeing the the route that water takes around, over and through the rocks in these places is often more intersesting than the "big" view of a waterfall.
There may be some nice crops in there that could make the interest more concentrated and with the last shot, I'd be tempted to go darker and force the attention to the water a little more.
If you're happy to see what other peoples take on your shots might be you could tick the "edit" box in your profile. That puts a little flag on all your posts letting folks know it's OK to have a play with your images and post the results. I've seen some really good ideas come about from seeing different versions of a shot. :)
ok have reworked the last shot with the help of raw files, lightroom and photoshop. What do you think?

I like 2,3 and 4, the exposure time is long enough to show the flow of the water which is nice.
Do you have any taken with a smaller focal length ? It would be nice to see the falls in context with a bit more of the surrounding scenery.

milestone check out www.flickr.com/photos/toothie/sets/72157602243737072/ for more pics tbh there arnt many wider angle shots because of the contrast.
heres one i like though

Do you have the locations for these waterfalls
I would like to go and take a few pictures ?
They're at Ingleton, in the Yorkshire Dales... I'm guessing on the waterfall trail
