Well, if you want to aim for the 'golden hour' - go for about 1 hour before sunset - that'll be approx 6-6.30 depending on where you are based.

I'm presuming that's what you meant?

This website (http://www.goflying.org/met/riseset/index.htm) is great for finding out Sunset times for your location. It even allows you to download a PDF of the times for the whole year which you can then print off.

thanks, do you think sunrises are better than sunsets.

i have no water or sea near me so are there any examples or advice of getting good sunsets without the relfections of the water and by the sea.

Sunrise the light is clearer and sharper, less warm and if you're lucky, you'll get some nice mists too at this time of year. Get up early and head to the hills if some mist is forecast!

Sunset is good at the moment, I'm gutted I missed tonights as I was busy doing other stuff alas (shopping, grrrrr) I'm planning on an early one tomoz and out late tomorrow night.

You will probably need to make 2 exposures or more and merge them, either traditionaly with layers in PS or with a dedicated HDR program, unless you have some ND graduated filters as the sky is almost guaranteed to be brighter than the foreground. Tripod is going to be another essential as will a cable release if the exposure time is over 30seconds.

If I was you, I'd just get out there and have a play. where are you based? Have a look around the web for local beauty spots and places of interest, use google earth to recce the places so you're going to be facing the right way (sunrise is no good if the vista you have in front of you faces west!)

Failing that, nicely illuminated buildings and cityscapes can look amazing with the right light ;)

Alas I don't really know Newbury very well. I did live in Amazingstoke for a year but there is NOTHING worth photographing there. Unless you count some old trollop hurling outside yates' wine bar on a monday night lol.

Up to you on that one 'm' I'm afraid. If you live there then you should have at least a small idea of where's pretty around you.

Having said that though, anywhere will do if it's a good morning/evening and you've got a good eye for a photo.

The shots in my gallery titled 'early riser' where taken 5 minutes from where I live on the outskirts of bath in not the the most photogenic location!
