Is there anyone in London with a digital SLR and some spare time this month? The following appeal for help has been made:
Bob Phillips on behalf of FreeBMD coordinates a very small band of volunteer photographers who take photographs of the BMD index pages at the Family Record Centre (FRC) in London.
The FRC is removing access to the index books on 27th October 2007 prior to its total closure next year so Bob would like to take as many photographs as possible before it is too late..
Anybody who can and would like to help please contact Bob.
He's not necessarily looking for multiple visits, anything helps and the job is easy, just a steady hand and a digital camera is needed.
Further details of the requirements and how to contact Bob are at: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robert.phillips13/rescans.htm
Some background: The government has a project to digitise the indexes of births, marriages and deaths and at the end of this month the existing indexes are going to be removed from public consultation.
Meanwhile there has been a project running for a number of years which uses digital photographs of the archive pages which are transcribed by volunteers, compiled into a database and made available to family history researchers online free, gratis and for nowt. FreeBMD is the only on-line resource making this information available without payment, the rest being either pay-per-view or require an annual subscription, whereas it is expected that the official digitised indexes will also be a charging service. However FreeBMD is not yet complete and few records more recent than 1920 have been photographed and transcribed.
The request is for people who will help with the acceleration of the photography stage of this project as this needs to be completed by 27th October.
