Hello all,
I want to buy a IS lens on a budget before I have a short break in london and was wondering if this was a worth while lens:-
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS - £129
http://www.bestcameras.co.uk/shop/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Canon_EF_S_18_55mm_f_3_5_5_6_IS_7 59.html
I tried pbase.com but cant find any sample pictures with this lens only the none IS version. All advice appreciated.

The value of IS on a lense that short is debatable
I would tend to agree. Why were you after IS in particular?
i have always thought IS at such a short length is pointless

well living in sunny england the lighting is always so poor that I usually have to use a slightly longer exposure so a lot of pics that look fine on the LCD preview turn out to be blurred.
ok, all i know is that the non-IS is not that good although perfectly good for a starter lens. If you brought a F2.8 lens you should have no problem with the weather as the shutter speed will be much faster and it is a better quality lens.

Im willing to take recommendations for specific lenses for around the same price.

Problem being is a tripod is not always practical for exampled I have a trip planned for london next month I couldnt carry a tripod around with me and just set it up every time I wanted to take a picture.
consider the 50mm 1.8
fast cheap and sharp
but not a zoom

I have that lens and it is a good lens but I need a lens for city pictures so I need something with a lower rating than 50mm.

ok so I decided to take the advice and went for a slightly more expensive 55-250mm IS lens. But I bought it from Bestcameras.co.uk and it seems they dont actually have it in stock and Im getting no joy trying to get a lead time from the owner. Does anyone have any experience with bestcameras.co.uk????
