Welcome to the 2011 Talk|Photography Photographer Of The Year Competition.

Vision Graphix will provide a print of the winning image for the winner each month
This year, the themes are designed to make you think, to encourage the imagination.
The deadline for entries is the 11:59pm on the last day of the month, shortly after that a POLL will be made for you to vote for you favourite entries that month. This process will then repeat each month with a leader board being published after each round. The winner of each month will receive a prize (this will be announced each month). The member with the most votes at the end of the year will win the coveted TP POTY Trophy.
So on with the competition;
The theme for DECEMBER is:
'OPEN'
Any subject you like, show us whta you got!

Please take a moment to read the Rules and Guidelines (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=280717). before entering, also paying close attention to the following :
* Please note that any photos submitted must not be, or have been, shown on these forums before.
* From this year, no 'placeholders' will be permitted so enter carefully. Once you have placed an entry, you will not be able to replace it.
* To disqualify an image, we simply edit the post, removing the image in question, replacing it with a Staff message.If your entry has been disqualified due to image sizes, you may re-edit your post with a resized version of the same photo. This must be done by the closing date. All disqualified images that haven't been sorted by the closing date will be left out of the vote and marked VOID in the poll.
* If anyone wishes to bring one of the images to the attention of the staff for this or whatever reason, then please use the RTM button under the post in question (It looks like this http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/images/custom_blue/buttons/report.gif).
This thread is for DISCUSSION only do NOT post any entries in here. The Entries thread will be started on the first day of the month.

should be interesting to see "open" topic shots, that are actually taken to the competition timetable - I have to say, in the past the "open" category was occasionally a bit of a "I'll drag something out of the archives" month. At least this time, as I understand it, the shots will still have to have been taken after the date/time that this thread was posted :)
Haven't a clue what to shoot though - personally, I think I work better when I've got a brief to shoot to :(

Why not set your own brief? Or use one from earlier in the year to work to?

This one is tricky, theres not a whole lot coming to mind....if i lived in Amsterdam it would have been a slam dunk.

I can definitely see this as being a daft question but I am confused about the topic.
Does 'OPEN' mean it's an open topic, as in there is no topic and anything goes?...
OR
Does it mean something/someone ect, relating or being deemed as 'OPEN' e.g a door, window, vast landscape ect

yes any subject but that still could easily mean that subject would still need to relate to the topic... would there be any point in mentioning a topic didn't exist?

More like a dirty great kick up the 'arris to be honest... Having a real "issue" with motivation and inspiration all round for the last year - if it hadn't been for the POTY i'm guessing i'd have taken less than 40 frames in the year...
Im not holding my breathe for this one, way to many better shots that will come in. Will take part though and that will make a full years entries for me, my first full year having a go. Not sure if im going to bother next year yet.

How very dare you! :D You've proved you can get entries in every month - so now, you raise the bar for next year. I'm in the same boat as you.
Virtually every month i've had ideas but then never got the time to go and shoot them - ending up with a 'that'll have to do' shot in the last day or so. Having said that - my goal was to get an entry in every month and i've done that (well.. 11 out of 11!) and with the last one being open i can't possibly fail to get the 12th in. He said :bonk:
I think in the whole year, i've probably been out shooting on my own less than 5 times. Which is so bloody annoying. So that's my goal for next year.. make some 'me time' :clap:

But have to agree with you on this one Mark...in so far as...what in hells name do I shoot....far to complicated ...I though having to shoot to a theme was difficult :lol:
I started this as a bit of challenge to myself....never realised how addicitve it would be...my aim was to submit a shot each month come hell or high water which so far I've managed ( although more than a few are quite dubious in content & quality :lol: )
So onwards & upwards for the final month.....I'm sure I can do lots worse than in previous months :lol:
As for next year...if it's themes like these then I daresay I'll have another go , if it's themes like last years I'll just sit back & watch :thumbs:

Folks, being a Newbie, I had to read this a few times too.
I understand it to mean the date of the first post posted in the DISCUSSION thread not the date of the ENTRIES thread. It doesn't specifically say this in the rules though.
Again, not being a pedant just a newbie, so dont burn my backside :) :)

It's definitely from the date and time of the discussion thread opening - I think we explained this in the first few months, when we had loads of people submitting archive shots that were DQ'ed, and the old-stagers have got the hang of things now, but yes - we do insist on EXIF data being present in the shot, and we DO check that the pictures were within the timeframe - just check last month - there were a couple of shots DQ'ed for just this reason. I'm fairly sure that this will continue in 2012's competition as well :)

The aim of the competition is to improve your photography. Therefore photos must be taken specifically for the competition and must be taken after the theme is announced.
The theme is announced when the discussion thread is started.

I have got a entry in every month for the last 2 years and I believe it's made me a better photographer (still a long way to go) because it makes you think more about your images and to improve them.
I will be taking a year out next year due to leaving our Armed Forces after 24 years and getting a real job which means I have to work LOL and for the next 6 month I am having to work and live away from the family but I will be looking in on all your work and voting.

Can't believe I have made an entire years worth of entries, fair chuffed with myself :D
Well that's me done, cant see me getting anything else so put that one in. Will add it to my 52 thread when the comp is done. All 12 images in for me this year :)
So many great shots in already and I've still got no idea what to shoot or when I'm going to shoot it! By far the toughest month all year for me.

By far the toughest month all year for me.Iv found this the easiest month, its really hard to take pics with a specified theme i find. This month you can do what you do best, in my case i find night photography a lot easier than day photography. Wether or not it does well is a different matter :lol: but its the most fun iv had shooting for this competion so far.

Right - that's it, 2012 POTY for me is over!
Tried to work the word "open" into something, shot half a dozen different ideas, and at the end of it all, I kept coming back to the shot I've entered instead. So - I've entered a picture that I liked, simple as that. Because if it's not fun, it isn't worth spending all this time on.
Now I can just sit back and hope that I can still keep in the top 10 by the end of voting - my aim at the start of the year.

I think you will be safe in the top 10 Mark....seriously who are you trying to kid :D
If I make it into the top 10 I will be well chuffed for my first year.
There have been some cracking images submitted this year and the reworked themes have generated diversity which is nice to see. Keeps the old grey matter ticking over too :lol:

I managed to get an entry in, i didn't want to end my first go at POTY with 11 out of 12.
You've got to make the effort haven't you ? :naughty: i've enjoyed doing them all this year and will be back again doing it in 2012 :D

OK - got my entry in. Some deliberation about what to enter but decided to go with my first idea (a promotional piece of photography for one of the local theatre groups). Am hoping it falls within the remit of images may be photoshopped!
Anyhow, here's to 2011 POTY! Has been fabulous taking part and seeing how the various themes have been interpreted. There have been some cracking entries and it is clear I will need to up my game next year.

Ok thats me in for the last time for a while, i had to change me image this month as the same subject had already been posted by another member so went with an image that shows what the UK has had to put up with this month - " Stormy Wintry Weather"

Well, I'm in - didn't think I was going to make it after my good lady broke her arm on Tuesday - suddenly promoted to carer; chief bottle washer; cleaner and children's entertainer so my planed photography outing was quite rightly cancelled!
Anyways - used my plan B shot and will save my first idea for 2012 - should fit nicely with one of them!
