View Full Version : what cf cards
what cf cards do you use there seems so many different ones out there and where is the best place to buy??
I use 2Gb Sandisk Extreme III, I think you will find the cheapest place for them is http://play.com
Don't bother trying to get them from ebay because a lot of them are fakes.
there are a lot of differant card manufacturers and they are definitly not all equal. I used to use them for Digital audio systems and there were many cards that wouldn't store or operate properly with pic chip instructions and MP3 .
I have had some CF cards in 7 day a week use continuously in Museums playing MP3 for 5 years without a single stoppage !
I would personaly void sandisk at all costs (sorry scraggs just my experience) Kodak and Fuji I have had good experience with also Lexar are good. I have also used these to boot and run computers on without a hard drive

All my cards are Sandisk and have never had a single problem. I know many if not most people on here use Sandisk cards and have never seen a thread with anyone having problems.

choice will partly be down to the camera you shoot with, and how many FPS it takes vs its buffer capacity. from reading one of the reviews of the 40D, it didnt make much difference whether a sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III was used.
Sandisk Extreme III for me :)
Good advice from Scraggs re Ebay - just don't go there for memory cards of any sort, it's riddled with fakes
I have Sandisk Extreme III's and MyMemory own brand cards, the Sandisks are faster but all work well. Play.com is as good a place as any to buy them :)
I have Fuji 1g, Scandisk 1g and a couple of cheap (2g and 4g) I got from 7dayshop.com. The cheap ones work fine at under thalf the price of a named brand, *** they are slightly slower. Been using them for over a year now without any probs.

Sandisk Extreme III 2GB ones, I`ve sent one of them through the washing machine and it never even flinched.
sandisk are obviously better quality than they used to be when I used them last 3-4 years ago but then I wasn't using them for images I was using them to store MP3 with pic chip instruction sets and they were unreliable for that purpose. tbh I have never tried the extreme versions . I still have a couple of dozen cards I didn't think anyone was using them these days.

Lexar 133x cards. I had bad experiences with Sandisk so I would never use them again.
I've
2 x Scandisk 2G III
1 x Scandisk 1G II
2 x NoName 2G
1 x NoName 4G
The NoName's work but boy are they slow compared to the Scandisk III 's

wow, never heard anyone say anything bad about Sandisk before, which I had thought was odd. Interesting to see they aren't without their problems.

Same here, working fine still! :D
1 x Sandisk III 2gb
2 x Sandisk III 1gb
1 x Integral 1gb
1 x Kingston 1gb
1 x Sandisk 256mb
Out of all of the above the only one to fail and only once was the integral. IMO Sandisk are #1 for me, although Lexar are the equivelant, with this its just what you are either used to or start to use from the beginning bit like Canon/Nikon same old argument as to which is best :D

I swear by the Sandisk Extreme range. Currently using a mix of 4GB and 2GB Extreme III CF cards.
I don't bother with the Extreme IV as for my 30D and 40D the increase in speed over Extreme III isn't worth the extra dosh (imho).
To help your choice take a look here.....

Change the drop down for your camera type.
Also, DON'T buy off eBay! 99% of Sandisk cards on their are fakes. As said by others play.com is a good bet.
cheers guys lots of good info, i was looking on ebay but not now!! at the moment i have a 4 gb dane-elec which i got from 7dayshop.com and have to say i am pleased with it, also 2 x 256 cards cant remember the make, these are the ones i want to replace with a couple more 4gb ones, just getting my xmas list together ;)

Got two 4GB Sandisk Extreme IIIs here.
All I'd add to the previous posts is to not bother with Extreme IVs - the slight extra speed doesn't justify the much higher cost.
2x Sandisk Extreme III 2GB
1x Sandisk Ultra II 2GB
Never needed more then that on a shoot.
