View Full Version : 1:3 or 1:1?

Sensor crop size that is.

I'm really interested in some honest opinions of which you'd go for as I'm thinking of adding another body to my bag. I'm also equally interested in the reasons you wouldn't go for either.

The 1DS Mk 2 is way too much for my pocket, but Canon now offer the 1:1 5D and the 1:3 1D Mk2 N, both of which I can stretch to.

My main interests are general walk round photography and some wildlife photography. I live too far away from landscapes not made of concrete to be too concerned about that obvious advantage of the 1:1 sensor and I have no intention of investing in the enormous tele lenses I'd need to really exploit a 1:1 sensor for wildlife shots, so I'm obviously leaning towards the 1D Mk2, but I'd really appreciate any thoughts on the subject from you guys.

Wildlife - bad weather, long distances, speed. 1D MkII2.

To me it's the perfect camera, it's all positive and I don't need prints over A4 so 8MP is fine. The 5D doesn't have the weatherproofing, it's too slow for action, the full frame sensor means you need genuinely long lenses, it's almost like buying into a new system.

I know it's just my subject preferences but for me there's absolutely nothing would make me choose the 5D over the 1D.

BTW, why are you thinking about an upgrade from the 20D?

Steve
25-10-2005, 12:53
I hate to say it but for exactly the same reasons as dod has typed above my choice would also be the 1D MkII n and actually save some money if you can still source a non "n" model.

If you where shooting landscapes and the weatherproofing didn't interest you then the 5D would probably be a better choice but you aint and it does, if you see what I mean ;)

CT

BTW, why are you thinking about an upgrade from the 20D?

Well.. I was, but Jan has this fantastic little compact she uses, which is pretty good but it's limitations were bought home to her on a recent zoo visit. In short, she now appreciates all those expensive lenses she's moaned about in the past - so much so that she's developing quite an interest in the 20D, so we'll be hanging onto it, which I can't exactly say I'm too cracked up about. :D

Steve
25-10-2005, 13:03
Ohh more competition :FIcamerap

Does that mean that she will be regestering now as well?

Say hello to Jan from me :)

CT
25-10-2005, 13:30
LOL I will do Steve. I just might get her to register yet when I can get her to take it off full auto. Mind you, considering some of the results she gets in that mode, it makes you wonder sometimes. ;)

1D Mk2/n all the way mate, i would buy one in an instant if i could afford it, the weatherproofing and speed would easily give me the reasons needed ! To me the 5 is still a waste of money for the type of photography i do (ie random some good mostly bad ;))

Oh and say hi to Jan from me too :)

CT
25-10-2005, 21:37
Jan says "Hi" :)

Thanks for the feedback folks, it's nice to have my thoughts echoed - I intend to have this camera a long time - so it's not a casual purchase, I don't want to make a mistake. :whistling

IanC_UK

I dont think you can make a mistake with one of them mate :) Will be my next purchase at some point in the probably distant future ! lol by then the 2d will be out ;)

Matt
25-10-2005, 21:45
You will have to make the choice sooner or later, so you may as well make it now.

If the 1Ds mk2 is out of the question, then you only have one choice 1d mk2.
I don't think the 5D is the route to go from the 20D.

Has Jan already kidnapped the camera? if so you'd better get your skates on.

Matt I hear you mate - watch this space.;)

She hasn't kidnapped it, she's privileged to get the occasional use of it. :p I'm actually really pleased that she's showing an interest. I wonder how many photographic wives would tell a very different version of their day out - hanging around while we're wrapped up in what we're doing. :FIcamerap

:D Thanks Doddy - you're all heart! I think I missed the "Why" in your earlier question? I'm not dissatisfied with the 20D - far from it, but I've had a couple of rainy days with it recently and I've spent more time worrying about keeping it dry than taking shots, which was also a problem for most of the gang on the Chester Zoo trip. So that's one big factor and there are other advantages - faster autofocus, spot and multi spot metering - a huuuge buffer, writing to CF and SD cards simultaneously (and at the same time) the list goes on.

And the real clincher is it just feels like it's carved from a brick and I want a ****er.

So I take it that you have ordered a nice new Canon 1d(n)MKII then? When is it expected to arrive :)

CT
26-10-2005, 09:02
Just placed my order! The outgoing model is getting rarer than hens teeth as people snap them up, although some places do have a few. I think the N model has some nice improvements though, so that's what I've ordered. First stocks are expected in the next month and I'm happy (well ... reasonably) to wait.:)

Thanks for the feedback... and the kick up the arse. ;)

I hate waiting for anything, I've just went and ordered the 100-400, now I just want it here, now, immediately :annoyed:

CT
26-10-2005, 09:25
Good move Doddy! :thumb: That lens is absolutely the nuts - you'll love it.

I'm not good at waiting either, but it's not as though I don't have a decent camera while I'm waiting, so for once I'm not too bothered.

Steve
26-10-2005, 09:35
I have been waiting for over a year to add the Canon 300m F4 L IS lens to my collection. With the recent move and the current situation it looks like it could be another year at least...so bah humbug to you two and don't talk to me about waiting :nono:

dod
26-10-2005, 09:36
Hope so ;) Was sorely tempted by the sigma 100-300 F4 which seems to be very sharp, and cheaper, but the IS and extra 100mm finally swung it.

CT
26-10-2005, 09:43
LOL@Steve.

The IS on the 100-400L is a lifesaver. I've got away with some silly hand held shots that I really shoudn't have - 1/80 at 400mm. The problem is you want all your lenses to be IS.

This was the clincher for me. In the shop, 1/30 at 400mm, 100% crop, sorry to crap your thread CT :coat:

Can we expect a full written review including unboxing pictures? I presume that Jan is going to intercept it from the postman and put it away until Christmas. It would be so wrong for you to set a bad example and have a pressy before then ;)

I have just had my brother at my house showing me his new 1DMk2N and I am mighty impressed with it. :thumb:

The larger viewfinder is much easier to read and pictures can be reviewed at ease instead of straining your eyes as I do with my 1DMk2.. :(
(A sign of getting older)..

Another winner with the N model is changing from the Compact Flash to the SD card now, Hold 1 button down and toggle once with the wheel and its there in a second, With my older version it takes loads longer so another plus there with the N model.

A great purchase in anyones book IMO.. :woot:

Couple of quick pics then..

Very brief initial impressions...

It's heavy!! The autofocus is lightning fast and 8 fps has to be seen to be believed. The viewfinder is much bigger and brighter, and the new larger screen is much easier to read in bright light, having larger fonts is useful for us old gits too. The build quality is just superb, it really feels the bizzo.

It's virtually impossible to change any setting without double entry by pressing a button and turning the command dial so that will take a bit of getting use to

You now know as much about it as I do, - I'm gonna sit down and wade through the manual. Deep joy in the fundamolds. :D

Remember to condition the battery CT.
It doesn't say in the manual ( at least it didn't for the old 1DMKII ) but refresh the battery for the first three charges.
Then refresh occasionally.

Congrats.
It's a beast, you'll love it. :thumb:
I find the 1.3 crop factor the perfect balance since I enjoy all forms of photography.

I've no doubts on that score having seen Matt leaving his 1DS MK11 out in pouring rain all day at Chester Zoo. Despite being ****ed on by the elephants and a couple of baboons it was still firing on all cylinders. :icon_eek:

I do need a waterproofed lens though to be really safe. ;)

Well I'm now totally in love with this camera. I think I've pretty well got to grips with it by playing with it and just referring to the manual when I was stumped. Now I just want to get out an use it and it's chucking it down. I know it's weather proof, but I'm not. :p

I did just manage this serious shot though..:D

Spot metering - I can't tell you how much I've missed that.
