View Full Version : Intermittent site problems?
I see a few problems with this site but they are intermittent so I can't be sure if it the connection I am using or the site itself.
Earlier today (mid am i think) the site was unobtainable for a while and i got the hosting companies page come up instead - that has happened before...but not very often. Today was at work on adsl.
5 mins ago the site would not load here at home on ntl - now it loads fine.
half an hour ago I could not post because the icons were downloading from a pipex site. That happens quite frequently but usually they complete eventually. This time it never did.
Most of the time everything is fine... but sometimes it grinds to a halt.
This is a 'for info' post not a complaint + I was wondering if its just me :)
I couldn't get on for a while earlier today, but I wasn't sure if it was because of a site problem our our ISP
I'm getting exactly the same problem. The site was unavailable earlier today for a short time, and an hour or so yesterday.
I was aware that the site was unavailable for an hour or so yesterday but unaware of the other issues. I will speak to the hosts to see if there is any work that they are doing or if not, weather they can look into the issues for us.
Due to a hardware failure, all systems are currently down. We have engineers working on the problem and we hope to have all systems restored very shortly.
Our servers are now back up but we will be doing some additional configuration so you may experience short periods of downtime
Those where posted by our hosts yesterday, it may be that there are some small remaining issues resulting from that, however I will raise a ticket to get things checked out.
i can safely say, it wasnt me!
This site and the hosts own site were all unavailable yesterday evening - late ish I think 10.30? gave up and switched off. No probs today.

You sure about that Matty ;) :nunu:

I have been very busy over the last two day and have not had chance to chase this up...entirely my fault.
I will get some free time today and will make it a priority.
At 8.50 am this:-

and at 8.55 it is working again.
My previous post was from work.
The site has just taken another 5 minute holiday - this time from home on ntl.
I ran tracert - which got to the server ok. So I guess the server was just not responding.
I notice the last part of the routing is through clara.net . I use clara for nntp and an email account and sometime notice a similar pattern with them. The work account is with a clara group company so being 'inside' their network does not get round the problem.
(site still seems slow now)
Continuing conversation with myself....
The thread on the page for this section of the forum does not show the above post as latest - and the 'recent posts' does not show it either....so something happened on the server.
I got this at 18:55 tonight...I even saved it on the clipboard for you!:
There seems to have been a slight problem with the database.

Guys I am aware of what you are saying and appreciate you keeping me updated. I am having overall site access issues not entirely related to the possible host problems but I am currently continuing a dialogue with the hosts regarding the site wise issues.
I cant give you any more info at this time but rest assured I am doing all that I can to get the site running smoothly.
Phew i have been getting very patchy access tonight, been rare as rocking horse droppings me getting in !!
Seems to let me in ofr a few minutes, then its all gone again !
Hope the hosts can come up with the reason for you soon Steve !
Bare with us guys, the hosts are helpfull, if they can find an issue and fix it they will.

It's no big deal....but don't be too long...I have to go and sit with the Mrs every time the site is down :nunu:
I have just performed some database maintanace and some table and file optimisations from within the forum software to see if that helps a little as well. As I said I am having other internet access issues here in Germany that are making it difficult for me to narrow down if the issues I am having are on the forums side like you guys or my side with my ISP.
I am doing my best for you and appreciate you posting into this thread when you have issues. :)
Just disappeared again

Thats a strange error as it shows that you are resolving the host, and cPanel is kicking in to say that there is nothing on the site??
I have seen that page a few times before.
Got the 404 message (as pasted in my previous post to this thread) before it changed to the above.
I was already on the site and navigating via the new posts link when it went to 404. Tried 'back' and click again - same 404 message. closed IE relaunched site from favourites and got the cpanel page.
2 mins later back to normal.
hmmm,
Major issues getting onto the site tonight......

Me too, usually just seems to dissapear for a minute or two, maybe three or four times a week. It'll be all fine then you click refresh or Todays Posts and its gone, give it a minute or so and its usually back up. I thought it was a bandwidth issue or something.

seems to have been fine since then for me.

The site just took another of its little holidays for a few minutes.
I've noticed it getting generally slower over the last week or two as well - particularly in the mornings.
The hamster's getting cold and hungry I think.
Someone throw him a few nuts.
aye i couldnt get on earlier either, checked the host site and it showed no issues, so im not really sure!

Also just noticed, boon post above is timed at 5:10 on the forum page, but on this reply page, it says 4:10?

That's weird it's right again now?

Think I may have caused quite a few emails just now :)
Site came back quicker than I expected though.

Fascinating - they took a while to come up and then totally confused me as they say I'm 92 % DSL speed down but ISDN speed up!
Thanks to our administrators for their hard work to keep us away from what we should be doing. I thought it was just me as I've being going slow as well over the last couple of days!:hissyfit:

ADSL almost always runs at two speeds - your down stream speed, this is usually the fastest and is typical how most people gauge their ADSL speed (ie 512k, 1Mbit, 2Mbit, etc), then there the up stream speed - normally this is only about 256k, as most peoples activity is down stream orientated they would rarely notice any lack of speed in the other direction. Its for this reason that setting up your own servers isnt particularly suited for ADSL connections because it would always be restricted by you upload speed.
Hope this makes some sense:doh:
database tables are apparently fine this end, so we are at a lose to explain the issues.
We have been in touch with our hosts again today and now believe our recent issues to be solved. Apparently another site on the same shared server as us was the cause and they have now been taken to task.
At the moment everything seems great but both the hosts and ourseleves are keeping a close eye on things. I am sure that you will keep us informed of any future issues if/when they occur ;)

Well only if we're passing like :)
