Vision Graphix will provide a print of the winning image for the winner each month




This year, once again, the themes are designed to make you think, to encourage the imagination.

All of the themes for 2012 are listed below so you have over the course of the year to plan and create your masterpieces. Unlike last year, photos do not have to be taken within the timeframe of the relevant round but must be taken after this thread was posted.

Also, entries will not be posted in an entries thread but should instead be emailed to poty@talkphotography.co.uk between 00.01 on the first day of the month and 23.59 on the last day. The following MUST be included in the email:

FORUM USERNAME

MONTH/THEME BEING ENTERED (for confirmation)

The usual size limit of 1024 pixels on the longest side still applies.

Once the month has closed, the entries will be posted in a new thread along with a poll for people to vote which, as usual, be open for 7 days.

Hopefully it might encourage people to keep entering all year - if you get a shot "in the can" for Decembers topic by February say, it might just give the extra added impetus to not let things drift off half way through the year...

Personally, I'm just happy to see theres a specific topic for December - "Open" has kicked me in the teeth for the last 2 years :(

I'm endeavouring to complete all 12 challenges next year (including trying to shoot as many in the month itself) compared to only starting mid-year this time around.

I like the email/anonymity element this year - will add an additional dimension.

After completing the themed Photo52 for 2011 .... and having learned so much from same .... it may be time for me to apply what I have gained in knowledge of photography to the POTY. I can but only try ... and hopefully I will be able to manage all 12.

The themes seem quite challenging and the rules are fairer than previous (I like the fact that the entries have to be emailed).

I think the best part of 2012's POTY is the fact that the shot can be taken any time between now and the end of the theme's month. At least it means I can work around my works busy periods... However I'm totally stumped for January! :lol: Need to get my thinking cap on and get shooting!

I've let other things seriously get in the way of photography for the last 6 months but this might just give me the kick up the backside that I need to get me going again!

Yep - I like everything about the way this is put together for 2012. Annonymous entries, not seeing other images to influence our ideas, and especially having the full list to work to from the start - All perfect - Thanks.

just read through the rules/guidelines and all seems straight forward. Just thought i'd add one thing though... in view of the anonymity thing.. how about you stress that no username / personal name be used in any image title? Just to make sure. I know it says no watermarks / logo's etc.. already. Just a suggestion. :shrug:

The EXIF on a sent photo doesn't contain as much details as you would uploading,displaying to flickr but it should be sufficient ?

I might give this a try this year. I like that I can get photos in advance instead of having a panic at the last minute and I do enjoy trying to shoot to themes.

A few potentially daft questions though (although they say it's the one not asked that's stupid) and apologies if I missed something somewhere. If I were to take a photo for say, December tomorrow would I be able to email it then or have to wait for December? Assuming I was confident I couldn't improve on it, of course!
Next daft question is about the anonymity. Does that mean I'd need to remove my copyright details from the exif data on my photos?

Nope -you'd have to wait for Marc to issue the "December Entries Are Open" instruction, which obviously, wouldn't come until December :)

No problem - I think it'll be a 'trust' item. I've made a decision not to post mine on my flickr account until after the closing date of the monthly poll (I'm not sure it'll make any difference but felt that way it was truly anonymous)

With a newborn life is just so hectic and I can't see it getting any easier any time soon.
I shall however continue to watch this year as it unfolds and will cast my votes as always.

Finally managed to get something I'm sort of half happy with...possibly...maybe...too late now anyway as I've mailed it in :eek:

Had a worry that the mail wouldn't get through all the various spam filters...now worrying that the noise reduction thingy I used as stripped the EXIF info....& as I've not loaded it to flickr I can't check :bang:

Does anyone here use Neatimage(demo/trial version) ? Seems to work a treat on NR...oh well....fingers crossed :)

So many last minute checks to do... it's really nerve racking!!

1. make sure i've saved the jpeg version with 1024 longest side for the email entry
2. but make sure i've still retained a larger version (just in case)
3. make sure i've made the image private in my flickr so no peeky boos for anyone else
4. make sure i've put all the info in the right places on my email

i'd say you need to resize so marc isn't faffing around with the hundreds (:thinking:) of entries.

If you've got a smartphone you can just save the image direct from the tp website/app.

Embed All the EXIF into the image files, it can always be stripped before display - if it's not there, and you get DQ'ed for it, you'll regret it :)

I have a couple of entries where the entry is oversized or the forum name is omitted that I'm awaiting email replies for. I'd hate for people to miss out because of these things.

Oh dear, sorry to hear some peeps couldn''t post in time for January ..... but don't give up hope there are still 11 months to go :D and with some interesting and challenging themes too...... hopefully you will find the inspiration and motivation to contribute to same.

I can't wait to see the pics for January and the interpretation of It's a small world.

Good luck to all who are taking this on as a challenge this year. I hope you gain from same which I have set out to do and learn much from the experience.

Feb's subject is a mare! Rather than trying to guess what everyone else might do this time, I think I'll just go with what I think is a reasonably executed image. I failed miserably on the originality in Jan. I also thought that there would be gazillions of mini planets. Wrong.

Well - I'd say the key was in the phrase "all parts must be within the time frame" but frankly, if it's a photoshop layering process there's no way that anyone can check in any case without access to original files, so frankly, it's something thats between you and your own conscience :shrug:

I've had a handfull of idea's for March after much brain rattling...2 have been voted too gruesome by my parents & work colleagues ( great for bouncing idea's off & they're well used to my ramblings about theme's :lol: ) , 1 I don't have the props for which leaves me with 2...which I also don't have props for but hopefully I have a plan to sort them.....either that or I'll be dipping next month :'(

Drat :bang: after experiencing problems last night with sending attached files via MSN, I over-ran the midnight deadline (by 6 minutes), and had to resort to emailing a link to my Flickr as a last resort. Unfortunately that was not good enough, so I am out of the month of Feb.

Hopefully things will be better next month ..... and I will be able to post in good time so as to avoid any technical issues.

My understanding Pat is that the photographs must be taken this year, so there is nothing stopping us planning ahead. If you find something for the coming months themes then crack on.

Call it a compromise if you'd like but last year, people seemed to struggle with being able to get the shot done within what is a very short timeframe and that seemed to affect the number of entries over the course of the year. This is why we decided to announce all the themes at the start and allow entries as long as they were taken after the announcement.

It then allows people to take their time and for the opportunities to arise to get the shots they need. Photography shouldn't be rushed.

This is just my opinion but I would say personally that the quality of this year's entries overall has already surpassed last year's. Yes, there's a chance that some may use a shot that wasn't specifically taken for the competition but it's worth it IMHO.

I only have September done because the theme conveniently fitted in with something I was doing anyway. No doubt between now and then I'll decide I don't like it and redo it anyway!
I like that we can take the photos in advance if we're in a situation that fits, although I suspect Sept is going to be the 1 and only month where I haven't still been thinking in the final week... I know I'm going to be busy/away a lot in Sept/Oct so I may as well get them early if I can instead of rushing at the last second.

I know how you feel Mark, I really struggled this month. Looked at the title from so many different angles, but eventually got there and submitted yesterday. I'm sure you will come through with flying colours come the 11th hour :lol:

Looks like a late entry for me too, I did have a concept, tried to shoot it Saturday seem to go well until I had a look at them today and not at all happy...back to the concept board :thinking:
