My first attemt in manual mode and think i'm going to just leave the camera in manual all the time to learn more.

Only had the camera a week and my first slr :)

I took the same photos at different aperture settings and adjusted the shutter speed until the the exposure meter was in the middle in the view finder. These were the best ones but still seems under exposed (to my untrained eye lol)

Canon 350 with the kit lens, 18.0mm

Is a filter needed to stop the sun flare?

Very nice shots indeed. Good for you at starting manual... although they say that if you take 90% of your manual shots with the meter in the middle then there is no need for you to be using manual as AV & TV will do the same.

But having begun using the meter in the middle you will now be able experiment and go creative... you telling the camera what to do and not the other way round!

Have fun ... these shots are great.

When you ask if a filter is needed to stop the flare from the sun...do you mean that you WANT to stop the flare?.... because I think it looks good with the sun like that (its not actually flare... flare is hexagonal bits and bobs that look horrible!)

I like number one, sort of cityscape and landscape combined

The sharpness and exposure are excellent and like those comments earlier, I think the lens flare from the sun is just about acceptable and probably adds to the picture rather than detracts from it.

Keep experimenting.

Lovely shots. The flare from the sun is caused by using a small aperture (f16). which is why its not so prominent in the 2nd picture. If you ask me it only adds to an already great picture.

Thank you for the great comments :)

I thought a filter might take away some of the harshness of the sun in the first photo. Lots to learn lol it's so addictive.
