With Christmas fast approaching I am writing to Santa to ask for a new lens.
I would like to get into bird photography so would like a reasonable zoom or a prime lens. The question is what to go for. I tried an old Canon 70-300mm and found it ok but did not really get me close enough.
Could anyone suggest a decent zoom or prime for around the £400 mark?
Thanks
There many offerings around the £400 level. You arnt going to get very "long" as that costs £Xxxx.xx
(primes and zooms).
Without a doubt the sharpest lens in the bag is the 70-200 F4 L which you can get for £418 from warehouse express. (Kerso will be quite a bit cheaper).
Also the: This for the money is a top notch 'sumer lens.
EF70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM for £349 (then there's cashback)
Then there's the new:
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS £219
Dont forget that there's Sigma and Tamron

Cheers OG
Are these compatible with the canon 1.4x and 2x converters do you know, and are they any good?
Failing that I could always sell the kids

A second hand Sigma 50-500mm might be worth a look as well.
Edit; If you do end up selling at least bits of the kids then you might want to keep an eye out for a second hand Sigma 300mm f2.8. Thats what I got for a very reasonable price, and it works superbly with the 2X convter to take me up to a 600mm f5.6 :)
the 70-200 F/4 L is currently £350 (+£10 p&p) from Kerso and there is £70 cashback from canon at the moment
I don't absolutely need, and I can't justify and I've already got an old 70-300 that I can't use properly . . . but, but, . . . its just such a bargain at £290, I may even convince Herself with that price.
