Well - my votes are in as well - I'm really hoping that this month's low number of entries was due to people just missing the entry date, rather than being put off by the email submissions or something of that nature. Normally we have well over a hundred entries in the early months, so 43 is something of a disappointment personally.

That's not taking ANYTHING away from the people who did enter, in any way, but when we've tried this entry method BECAUSE people have said that the old one had put them off, its slightly worrying :(

Voted too, some great photos in there and well done everyone who entered

With regard to the lowish entry figure perhaps some people are put off because they feel their lack of processing skills puts them at a disadvantage

Obviously processing plays a part in photography and I would be the first to defend that view, but one or two entries might be better entered into a competition for photoshopper of the year
My daughter had a look through and commented for instance that some of the stars would have to be taken from the Hubble telescope to appear like that

Personally would like to see processing kept to the basics such as exposure, NR, colour, sharpening etc or for example whatever you require to transfrom from RAW or to use a favourite photographic term of mine "tarting up"

Doesn't detracte from som great photos though and fully intend to be back next month with another try albeit just a photograph

Mark I don't think there is any other way with submitting images without knowing who's image is who's. I like it that I dont who has taken which image (except for one - LOL) when it comes to voting.

Wow some really amazing photos in this first month. Well done to all who entered.

It made for a difficult choice. As for the numbers, I think if there had been more entries it would have made the decision that more harder to make.

I have cast my votes.

Good luck all and look forward to seeing what peeps come up with throughout the year.

But, as the images weren't actually posted for view until after entries closed, I don't see how that'd be relevant tbh - which is part of the reason for the change in entry procedures this year - you don't KNOW what you're going to be up against...

And, In fairness, and speaking as someone who spent more hours in the darkroom BITD manipulating my prints than I EVER spent actually taking the photograph (it wasn't unusual for me to take 2-3 weeks spending 4 hours a night in the darkroom until I'd managed to get a single satisfactory print of certain B&W landscape shots!) I've always been of the opinion that the only thing hat matters is the quality of the eventual image.

Provided that all the component parts of a photoshopped composite were taken by the person who submits the image, I think that it's fair game.

Also, using Image stacking and layering techniques for instance in astrophotography is a well established technique, and doesn't in any way detract from the technical aspects of actually taking the image in the first place.

Of course, your opinion is as valid as the next member, and I'd love to see a "Straight out of Camera" competition - perhaps you'd like to run one?? ;)

It's possible that some people looked at last years entries and assumed it would be of similar content

This subject is always a contentious one, no right or wrong answer and views are always of a subjective nature

To be fair I didn't say straight out of the camera, but someone with less photoshop skills or software could be seen to be at a disadvantage when looking at one or two entries

Provided that all the component parts of a photoshopped composite were taken by the person who submits the image, I think that it's fair game.

I take that to mean in the same timescales demanded by the rules of this competition

Not something we will agree on I reckon, but just playing devils advocate a bit when the number of entries was questioned

I wasn't going to enter this year but i really liked the new changes in the rules, and i also like the fact you can't see anyones photo, it allows you to live in hope instead of knowing you're beat lol.

I meant exactly what I said - obviously, to be within the rules all component parts would need to be taken within the timeframe. Where I'd have issue, is where a photo was a composite of a shot or shot's bought in from microstock for example and then other components "shopped" in. At that point I definitely believe it's no longer photography, but becomes digital artwork and derivative works based upon third party photography, and I'd definitely agree that it should have no part in a photography competition.

If all the component shots have been taken by the member however, then I say it's fair game.

On the post-processing conversation, my opinion (and it's just that, an opinion) is that anybody citing lack of software and/or post-processing knowledge is looking for an excuse not to enter, rather than a reason to enter.

Since joining this forum, I've only ever had Adobe Photoshop Elements 6, which can be had off eBay for 15 quid, and which is probably not half as powerful as some modern day free software such as Gimp 2.6. My knowledge of it is also very limited, with what I know basically picked up from either tutorials on TP, or tutorials on YouTube. I'm not worried though, last year my limited PP knowledge managed to get me up to 6th place; I consider myself a very amateur photographer, but it's remarkable what a little sharpening and tweaking curves can do to an image! As for the guys and girls who have the ability to PP an image till the original is barely distinguishable, good on them! If they've taken the time to learn, we should be able to admire it, or at the very least respect it for what it is. Last year I was in awe at some of the PP'd work, and I think the competition would be weaker without it. It certainly makes me want to improve the images I submit month on month.

<gets down off soapbox...>

As for the new format, I love it  I think for an image to be voted for truly on merit, it has to be anonymous. I also like the fact that we can't see what others have entered until the end, despite the fact that it would appear the vast majority of us think along the same lines! LoL

...Normally we have well over a hundred entries in the early months, so 43 is something of a disappointment personally...

Mark, It's a tough one - perhaps people were wary of the new format - I don't honestly know - it might build as we go but my thought is that I'd rather have 43 consistent entrants each month than 100 at the beginning and this fall away as the year progresses.
January IMO was a tough theme to interpret but the other themes I think will get better and better as we have all had time to get splinters in our fingers as we scratch our heads thinking of how we can bring them to life. Now off to think minimalist.......

I was thinking the same - amazing how there are some very similar interpretations within the theme whereas last year people could see a style posted and then changed their mind as it "had already been done!"

This format is a winner me thinks. (although not good for stress levels or resting heart rate!)

The suspense was like waiting for your exam results.....

Stil pondering the new format.....it's great to have to create what you feel is a suitable image without getting inspiration from others already posted or not doing an idea for the same reason.....but soooooo darn frustrating waiting to see the entries ....if only so I can sigh & think...." I could have done so much better "....or..." flip, why didn't I think of that " !

The anonimity is great though....PP'D to death or SOC....at least you know that people truly like what you've posted which I personally find really encouraging . I'm using the comp to improve my togging , improve my pp & to get my imagination going . It's also good to see a few shots in the same style...maybe 12 this month...cos it opens your eye's to what else is possible .

Enough rambling...votes in & boy was that hard work ...good luck to all

ps...also found a game in the new format.....trying to match the images with members....kept me occupied for a while today (sad I know:D )...so far I have one at 100% certainty & 4 others that I'm 95% sure of ....waiting to see if I've guessed right is really annoying the hell out of me now:lol:

What it is is digital art.

I don't suggest no processing, but IMO if you can't show someone in the real world the scene you photographed and have it look basically the same, you don't have a photograph - you have a (possibly very good) piece of digital art.

On a lighter subject, I've cast my vote. :)

Having spent most of the day with the lower entry numbers niggling away at me (yes - maybe it is a bit sad, but I'm on the staff here because I care about these things!) and I think that the real prime reason is very simple. When we had the old format of "enter when you'd got your shot together", there was a regular drip, drip, drip of entries coming in, and a consequent bump, bump, bump of the entries thread onto the front page of the forum... Now, this of course serves as a reminder to the regulars that the competition is going on again, and of course flags it up to the newcomers. I think it's no coincidence that the number of entrants this month is somewhere similar to the number of entrants at the end of last year...

So - we need to get the word out... I'm certainly open to suggestions on that front :)

Hiya Mark,

So is that not a solution .... i.e., every time someone posts to the POTY thread/s (which appear to be quite active at the moment) .... why not have same appear on the front page (because they don't currently show .... well as far I see). And unless someone actually visited the forum where the POTY thread is hosted ..... there won't be the same traffic passing.

Just an idea.

Actually - I can't remember the last time I actually looked at the front page (I've just subscribed to the forum sections I'm interested in and view them via the User CP option), and It appears that only posts from the Image sharing forums show up on there (and I understand it's been like that for AGES!) so I guess once again i'm talking a consignment of geriatric shoe menders :shake:

Hey Mark, if the shoe fits .....;)

Which then leads me to ask what most people see when they log into TP .... do they view the front page .... or is there a way to set TP to load to the User CP options of subscribed threads? (not something I have set up).

However, if that is the case ..... where folk do have it set to display their subscribed threads ...... is there not a way you can apply a notice/sticky to same to alert folk to the POTY?

Another alternative is that all those participating in the POTY add a link in their signature .... but I am not sure that would be as effective as that would depend on how many people come into contact with the member

Hopefully a solution will be found .... however I have to agree with a previous post .... that it is better to have 44 start and finish as opposed to 100 start and only 44 finish. Having completed the Photo52 last year where 179 people started and only a dozen finished ..... there are always going to be the odds.

Heyho!

Cheers

Dawn :)

I view front page and nothing from here shows which is a shame, i then have to go to forums and then select this bit, would be better if it could be found front page.

I think low numbers could be due to the theme this month, i nearly didn't bother but sorted myself out and got my image together in time to make sure i got something in but im not happy with it! I found it hard this month and looking forward to the rest

My votes are cast. I definately love everything about the new way of doing things. It was always annoying last year when someone kept beating me to doing my idea, sure this time there are lots of similiar ideas/concepts bu they are all executed quite differently.

I dropped out part way through last year, and wasn't planning on bothering this year. I didn't even realise the rules had changed until half way through Jan, so I think we definately need to promote it more.

Suggestion Mark,

don't know if it's been muted before but why not put the list on Facebook, Flikr etc with no opportunity to vote unless joining as a member of TP. Possibly more people who like photography and did not know of TP will join and it will give them a start with something to do by voting once accepted. ??

Well - speaking personally for a minute here - I'd rather the POTY be a photography competition not a popularity contest, so if anything related to Faecesbook happened, i'd stop entering straight away... I think there have been occasions in the past where people have used certain social-media sites as a method of canvassing for votes, hence the restrictions on voting for new members.

However - I'm a old fossil, who shoots pictures on film, and has real friends down the pub, not people on the end of a computer that throw sheep at me, so I'm possibly not the best placed mod to consider this, so I'll put it up for discussion in the staff room (and then do my level-best to black-ball it, as I actually quite like doing the competition )

....... I'd rather the POTY be a photography competition not a popularity contest.........

I fully agree.
The current format is fine ie no one knows who's picture's who, well that is unless people have shared it with their friends somewhere!

I'm not fussed if there was loads of entries or not, but if you want more people entering then it has to be advertised. The banner across the home page should work fine, but how about a PM to everyone every now and then to remind them?

Either way, it ain't gunna help me win votes unless I can do better than my January picture!

Goodness me, this is a tight finish - 15 minutes to go edit:make that 15 minutes and another 22 hours and 40 minutes :bonk:

I'm now on the second round of excitement as I'm dying to see which photo belongs to which member! I think I know a couple as others have said but will be really interested in seeing the full reveal!

As an aside, a thought I've had for some time is to see if the monthly winner will share a little more detail about the shot that they entered and won with.

This could simply be a little more about where it was taken or dependant upon the theme/photo it might be how they set the shot up (think props and/or lighting) or around the post processing used - perhaps an "Anatomy of The Monthly Winner"

I know when I saw some of the shots last year I often wondered how they got to the end result. In this way, it can encourage others to have a go and also enter the competition.

Appreciate some might not want to reveal their secrets but in the main I'm sure many wouldn't mind giving some story to their shot.

Just my 2p worth.

That's pretty much what I did with all my shots from last year... of course, most of 'em ended up having to go in the "creative" section, so kind of got lost amongst all the light trails stuff, but at least I managed to give them an airing somewhere outside of the POTY - it's definitely a shame that some of our collective "best work" (if it's not your best work, go out and re-shoot it - this IS a competition after all ) only gets posted in here, and then gets shelved - possibly because it's been taken anything up to a couple of months ago with last years rules - and with this years rules, it could be over a year from shooting, to being able to either get crit. on it or to show it off...

I'd LOVE it if the winner each month would take a little time in the winners announcement thread to give a little "back story" on the shot, and possibly do a bit of a Q&A session afterwards... however, I suppose that some people will want to keep their techniques to themselves...

+1. Top idea Adrian!

TBH since I've been entering, all winners have been very friendly and forthcoming with any questions, and I think any "How did you do that" questions would generally be quite well received. There's no need for a step-by-step guide to creating a carbon copy image, but I'd like to think that anyone entering would happily take a few minutes to say "I did this, this and this".

 I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew entering this comp (especially as there appears to be a strong professional photographer cohort in the mix of which I, as an amateur have no chance).... so I doubt I will be back for the rest of the year. But heyhoy I will keep my eye on the progress of others and cast my vote accordingly.

Good Luck all!

Cheers

Treat it as a personal challenge rather than a competition then

I am hoping I have time to join in next year and might well do a few months later this year to practice. It's not all about the winning and who is to say that you couldn't win a month?

Well there you are Dawn, three lots of encouragement in four posts and less than 10 minutes. We can't all win it but get the enjoyment of taking part and improving.
