View Full Version : Bi-weekly Photo Assignment.... AUTUMN...Discussion here!
A massive thanks to everybody that voted in the poill for this one!!
It will be great if we get 33 entries (HINT!)
It's not a competition remember!

Well I have thrown my attempt into the ring, with it being run for less than one day we already have three very different submissions. This is going to be great. :)
Steve, good picture, looks like someone turned up and dumped the leaves then buggered off leaving the ol' fella totally confused!!! lol

Ahhh... so now we get to see what you held back for the competition. Great shot mate :thumb:
Now if only we can get some half decent weather here so I can get out and have a go.
I had a feeling autumn might win, so i got my arse up to the arboretum. now it's just a question of which one to post......... maybeI should wait and see what the competition is like lol!
Both nice shots btw. I esp. like the symmetry in steves shot!
Both nice shots btw
:eek13:
sorry. Long day at work. My eyes go a bit numismatic after counting money all day!
They're ALL good photo's (see what I did there?)
good stuff to start off with, need to find my camera i think!
I think I've oversharpend mine a bit.
Opinions please?
I think you have oversharpened yours a bit ;)
Actually I like it a great deal, its bright and very vibrant. Good shot. :)
have you been on marcels comedy tablets? lol!
Thanks for the positive feedback.

Thanks for the positive feedback.
LOL I thought I felt them wearing off. I think he swapped em for hormone pills or something.

Thanks for the positive feedback.
yeah but they are hard to swallow :p
You're welcome on the feedback, that's what I am here to do, or so I am told ;)
Well I was just gonna put up my shot for the Autumn theme going on right now, and then I looked at all the pics in the thread. I don't want to put mine up right after Ghandi's, :p That is one fine shot Ghandi! As well as yours Steve! My goodness. The talent around here is top notch boys. I know it isn't a contest so as soon as I can find it, I will post mine to share.
Jewel.

Come on Jewel don't be shy, as you said its not really a contest, more a invitation for everyone to take a autumn picture and post it in a thread so we can all see some beautiful and different pictures. It's all subjective anyway so you may like one more than I do but that doesn't make either of us right or wrong.
Beautiful! Oh, bugger. I'll have to start again then....
So I've posted my shot of Autumn. If you haven't seen it yet, go have a look already! Is the red saturated too much ya think? Opinions welcome please. I also wasn't sure about the big branch that is quite visible shooting right across the pic. Seeing as the angle it was on, it worked for me. I liked it.
Jewel.
Jewel: :icon_eek:, that's a very top picture!
If I was to be picky I would like to see some more edge of leaf definition but otherwise wooo nice!
:)
Just took my shot 10 mins ago in the garden......proof that Autumn is still mild to date, although particularly windy today ;) . Less DOF than I wanted to aid focus, but light conditions were poor. Flash was too strong.
Now prefect shot would be catching one of the pods fly away in a slight blur :whistling
I don't think you have overdone the red saturation Jewel, you live in Canada so how would we know if that is the real colour or not ;)
I don't know what you were worrying about, it's at least as good as every other there in my opinion.

Snook that one in....goes to look :coat:
DJW..Somebody has nicked half the flower and all the colour from your photo!!! ;)
We are getting some great photos for this subject and all different too.
I see slideshowbob has also submitted a worthy entry. The voting is going to be difficult when the time comes.

 . Just looking out the window now the whole flowers blown away now. Interesting enough I was trying to think of something other than leaves, as too many excellent shots already....plus they've all blown away here ;)....then it got me thinking....what else could you shoot other than plants dying / changing colour that could equate to Autumn ? People in coats because the temp has dropped could be seen as winter / spring ....not so easy. Any thoughts anyone ?
Just checked some dictionary entries for Autumn :-
1. the season when the leaves fall from the trees
2. A period of maturity verging on decline.
Self portrait for option 2. then for moi ;)
AHA just thought of one.....a squirrel collecting nuts !!! Right off to buy a pack of KP ....wonder if Sammy Squirrel likes salted or dry roasted

Thanks. :)
Mine was taken yesterday when it wasn't blowing a gale and the woods weren't sodden. I'm pretty sure that any leaves still clinging to their trees yesterday will by now have been evicted. Autumn's such a cruel season.
2. A period of maturity verging on decline.
Self portrait for option 2. then for moi ;)
Join the club. Although at least in my case my bald patch can be used with an off-camera flash to provide a diffuse lighting effect. :D

What about lonely people? Autumn is the time when we start to go inside earlier as the days draw shorter, we hurry to and from work, not strolling the same, our heads facing down instead of up at the now long gone blue sky, the wind is colder and bites at any exposed skin. We don't nod and smile at strangers as we pass on the streets, we hardly see them apart from moving to one side to avoid collisions on the pavements. Any single people will find this time of year difficult, making friends/contacts is difficult if everyone is warm and dry inside.
That line of thought should be able to throw up all sorts of ideas and photos that I would consider suitable for autumn..
Oooh oooooh I've got an idea for another shot. Can I submit two?
Its just with all the talk about putting a different take on the theme.
Shall we let him? shall we?
You coluld always knock your original one out and replace it with the new one if you think it's better.
Some really top scotch efforts so far!
Yours is fine Jewel. Doesn't look too saturated from my screen!
Noah's I like too, along with ssbob's and daves!
... all the fallen leaves were calling "pick me, pick me" when I ventured into the woods with my camera.
That's funny....When I approached I heard them shout "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T STAND ON ME!!!!!"
I don't think you have overdone the red saturation Jewel, you live in Canada so how would we know if that is the real colour or not ;)
Thanks Steve. I'm not the only Canadian on the forums though am I? Guess I should have posted a maple leaf than huh. :p Sammy, as far as more leaf definiton I know what you mean. I took a million shots yesterday and I seem to have a problem with getting a sharp picture. As all the regulars around here would probably know, lol. I seem to want to get too close for what the lense will allow me to do. Christmas is coming, perhaps a new lense for mom is in order eh!
Jewel :)
Definately Jewel, get your order in now so that come Christmas the children are not able to turn round and claim you didn't give them enough time. ;)
What are the shot settings you are using Jewel? Maybe you're not getting the best out of the lens you have? For example, the Canon 50mm prime is a belter but only if you know not to have the aperture full open then it goes waaaaaay soft.
Maybe one of the other (stinky) Nikon peeps can help. :)
CT,
Big up the SAGA posse!
Nice self portrait!
Sammy, as far as more leaf definiton I know what you mean. I took a million shots yesterday and I seem to have a problem with getting a sharp picture.
Just a thought... are you shooting in RAW or jpeg? If the latter it may be that the in camera sharpening is set too low.
It may be that you need to sharpen a bit more in PS when you process the shots.
Another thing to consider is when you resize for the web, you should re-sample the image bicubic 'sharper' I only found this one out the other day!
If you're using a D70 I thought the kit lens was pretty good n'est pas?
CT,
Big up the SAGA posse!
Nice self portrait!
Thanks mate, but he's got well over 20 years on me. He's nearly 85, plays golf off 9 handicap, drives like a maniac and plays piano like a god. I wanna be like him when I grow up. :icon_cool
EDIT
I agree with your comments on Jewel's shot, plus it may benefit from being a little darker? It's another great example though of just how much Jewel's shots have improved since she bought her D70. Btw- Bicubic resampling is for expanding an image - Bilinear resampling should be used for reducing the size. I find that images still need a sharpen regardless of which method is used though.
I respectfully beg to differ from right-honorable friend....
lifted directly from ps cs2 help file (sorry Adobe ;) )
For Interpolation, choose one of the following options:
Nearest Neighbor A fast but less precise method that replicates the pixels in an image. This method is for use with illustrations containing edges that are not anti-aliased, to preserve hard edges and produce a smaller file. However, this method can produce jagged effects, which become apparent when you distort or scale an image or perform multiple manipulations on a selection.
Bilinear A method that adds pixels by averaging the color values of surrounding pixels. It produces medium-quality results.
Bicubic A slower but more precise method based on an examination of the values of surrounding pixels. Using more complex calculations, Bicubic produces smoother tonal gradations than Nearest Neighbor or Bilinear.
Bicubic Smoother A good method for enlarging images based on Bicubic interpolation but designed to produce smoother results.
Bicubic Sharper A good method for reducing the size of an image based on Bicubic interpolation with enhanced sharpening. This method maintains the detail in a resampled image. If Bicubic Sharper oversharpens some areas of an image, try using Bicubic.
And from the PSP Help file. :D
http://www.thephotographyforums.com/albums/album23/bicubic_bilinear.jpg
Not that I would *ever* want to question the god of chopping that is CT :)
I think Ghandi is right.. It's new to CS2 apparently. I've been watching some CS2 training videos, and it explains that Nearest Neighbour and Bilinear are older algorithms from earlier versions. As is Bicubic.
Newer to CS2 is Bicubic Smoother and Bicubic Sharper, for enlarging and reducing the size of an image respectively.
Basically Bicubic Sharper is a better way of doing what Bicubic did, and then applying a touch of USM. Now there is no need to add a bit of USM after reducing the size with Bi-Sharper.
Basically the upshot of the video was to use either of the last two as a first call.
Edit : (After reading CT's post), it seems that CT is actually not incorrect. The methods he mentions are available for the functions he also mentions, it's just that with CS2 there are now newer algorithms to deal with what was previously done via the methods mentioned.
If that makes sense,......cos it doesn't to me :D
 I never professed to be the god of chopping bod!
It's interesting then, and it could be really good, although I tend to be wary of one button -one shot filters as they treat all images the same, which isn't always a good thing. Fair does to gandhi though for being more up-to-date than moi. :)
I think we're both right in our own special ways!
B.O.T. I like mfwilds recent addition to the photo's. nice composition and I like the old/young split with the people!
mfwild's shot is a corker! I like the composition, the age difference and the DOF is just right. :thumb:
Well mines in. Nothing like the shot I had in mind. If I see my original idea again *with camera* maybe I'll change it.

CT/gandhi - many thanks guys I really appreciate the comments.
Looks like its going to be a good competition with eleven entries already :)

Sammy,the settings were

1/200 sec
70.00mm
Ghandi, I am using the D70 with the kit lense yes. I shoot in raw as well. Also it was shot in AP mode. I don't feel comfortable shooting everything in manual mode. As for all the other pics in the Autumn thread, wow! Alot of interesting takes on it. We should all pat ourselves on the back. :woot:
Cheers,
Jewel. :)

I use the D70 and kit 18-70 lens. After reading Thom Hogan's D70 guide I set my sharpening in camera to the minimum / off setting (can't remember off hand the exact setting). I'd rather be in control of the sharpening process
Taking sharp pics of leaves on trees is quite hard given the depth of field you often need and the fact that even the slightest wind can start them all dancing. Perhaps shooting in shutter priority might have served you better, giving you a chance to gauge whether a higher ISO was needed to allow you to shoot at a relatively high speed to cope with the movement issue.
:)
Now if only we can get some half decent weather here so I can get out and have a go.
Still waiting

I can't comment on the specifics of the Nikon lens but I know that both my zoom lenses are quite soft at the full extent. Maybe worth someone better in the know to comment on this, or even you perform a quick test if you get a chance Jewel! :)
But don't get me wrong here, I still think its a top shot with top post processing! :)
Very arty shot RobertP :)
I'm kicking myself now...I got some crackers in the woods today.

I didn't see it anywhere that people couldn't swap/change photos (your idea-your call)... but think it should not be allowed once voting has opened.
Nah...I'll leave it as it is.
Here are a couple from yesterday though...

PS. Steve, what voting is this?
When the fortnight is up (dont know when that is as I have not checked) then a poll will be set up and everyone can vote on their favourite. :)
Will check later..on my way out now for some fresh air..
closes on the 20th i think? started on the 6th
Does indeed close on the 20th. I have no problems if someone wants to swap their Image, this is all done in the name of personal improvement after all, and if you've managed to nab the killer shot at the last moment, then i for one would like to see it!
If anybody has any objections to this, speak now or forever hold your peace! ;)
Thanks for the comments Erin, I was very pleased with this shot as it was taken on a little compact camera and came out free of camera shake and the blessed thing actually managed to get the metering right and produce some Depth of field control for once. It must be a bit of a toughy for you this one, as unless I'm crazy, it's spring in your neck of the woods now? (and yer bloomin water goes the wrong way round the plug hole!)
I must say that the last few entries have really upped the ante now. Well impressed with every single last one of them!

Well I refer you to the first bi-weekly photo assignment here (http://www.thephotographyforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3385) that states its not a competition! I personally don't see the point of having another comp when people struggle enough with the monthly one.
:)
Right off to change my photo as it was just a joke one.
I think you can still have a favourite, it doesn't necessarily make it a competition. That would mean judging on things like artistic merit, tech ability, theme interpretation, rather than just the one you like best!
Ok. right then. Lets have a poll about having a poll. :D
I hate democracy. Or is this an anarcho-syndicalist commune?
ooooh, Theres some lovely mud down here kevin!

*cough*
DENNIS: I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We
take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the
week.
ARTHUR: Yes.
DENNIS: But all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified
at a special biweekly meeting.
ARTHUR: Yes, I see.
DENNIS: By a simple majority in the case of purely internal
affairs,--
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: --but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more--
ARTHUR: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!
WOMAN: Order, eh -- who does he think he is?
ARTHUR: I am your king!
WOMAN: Well, I didn't vote for you.
ARTHUR: You don't vote for kings.
WOMAN: Well, 'ow did you become king then?
ARTHUR: The Lady of the Lake, [angels sing] her arm clad in the
purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of
the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to
carry Excalibur. [singing stops] That is why I am your king!
DENNIS: Listen -- strange women lying in ponds distributing
swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive
power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some
farcical aquatic ceremony.
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: Well you can't expect to wield supreme executive power
just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
ARTHUR: Shut up!
DENNIS: I mean, if I went around sayin' I was an emperor just
because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me they'd
put me away!
ARTHUR: Shut up! Will you shut up!
DENNIS: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system.
ARTHUR: Shut up!
DENNIS: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system!
HELP! HELP! I'm being repressed!
ARTHUR: Bloody peasant!
DENNIS: Oh, what a give away. Did you hear that, did you hear
that, eh? That's what I'm on about -- did you see him repressing
me, you saw it didn't you?
^^thanks^^

(How you remembered my name, I have no idea!). No problem! :) Yes, I must admit the photo I entered was taken from when we had autumn in april/may. I hope no-one minds....? It's spring here but more like summer! All the trees have their leaves and the temperatures are reaching 35 degrees C already. By the way, our water goes the right way round! :D Actually, I just checked and for some odd reason it seems to go left and right down the sink.
(How you remembered my name, I have no idea!).
He's stalking you.
Thanks for your comments Erin, I do agree with your thoughts on the crop and I think that's why everyone thought it was too dark originally.
Trouble I have though is that I want to keep the aspect ratio at 2x3 so that I can get it printed and fit into a normal frame. It's never easy is it! lol :)
umm, actually it was this post that reminded me of Erin's name that I'd seen moments earlier.
People in glass houses dude? ;)

I didn't take my photo for this photo assignment, but I did take it with the theme in mind and as part of my mission in life, so does that count?
For those who don't read my online journal, I am living in Toronto now (for the next nine months).
Just a small reminder to everyone that this closes TOMORROW (sunday) at I guess midnight. (up to admin that one)
I'm gonna Pm steve tommoz at some point with suggestions for the next topic. So PM me with any good ones you may have thought of for inclusion.
I may have stumbled across an idea today, dunno how everybody feels about it, but I'm sure you'll all let me know ;)
How's about we change this bi-weekly theme gig to a seasonal one. I'm not suggesting the thread should be four-times-a-year but instead, we still have it fortnightly, but theme it around the current prevailing season, eg, early autumn, mid-winter, first touch of spring etc. ?????
It would save all the poll running admin issues and put everyone on a relatively equal footing (unless you live in the southen hemisphere)
Just an idea/ikea.
Love it or hate it?
not sure of the theme tbh, might run thin on the ground quite quickly
I think the interest comes from a different theme and the fact that everyone is voting on it, so by default the members are picking the subject, Its also much more interactive. So far I think that all though it is early days, you seem to have hit on a winning formula.
Personally I would suggest running with the current "format" for a few weeks and then see what happens from there. As always the majority should decide though :)
One other thing..when are you closing this round, maybe dinner time to allow for the vote to begin on the pictures submitted or at midnight if you prefer. Your call buddy. :thumb:
I reckon close it around 6pm. will give everyone a chance to vote this evening!
I will PM you later with a list of potential subjects for the poll for the new assignment, just gotta sort myself post work!
No problem, so that leaves about 45mins for you lot to get in your last minute submission or change the one you already posted :)
OK gents thats your lot, I will close the other thread now and add a poll to this one. Please don't change your photos at all from now on.
Cheers.
Added a poll for all you nutters, remember it is not a competition and you are voting only for your favourite for whatever reason you see fit. ;) It has been set to run for 6 days, barring any mistakes if you entered, then your name should appear.
Go view the pics again here (http://www.thephotographyforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3871) before jumping in :)
and no voting for yourself!
and no voting for yourself!

I would just like to thank everybody for the fantastic level of support this has received.
Top work guys and gals. the quality of the entries has also been exceptionaly high and I think I for one am gonna have a hard time picking a favourite. Lord knows how I'd cope if I was voting based on tech merit, interpretation etc.
Steve has been sent the list of potentials for the next assignment so they'll be up at some point soon.
I would also just like to remind you all about the 'proper' competition which closes at the end of next week, theme is 'Pubic Highway' I would hope to see that getting the same amount of support this idea has.
And remember... A vote for Steve is A vote for Non-violent protest and Harmony. Ommmmmm.
Peace.

Ok guys and gals....
After some thought nad discussion it was decided that there should be some input from you guys for the topics for the next assignment. I was gonna post this in a different thread, but I think with 3 running, it would've become confusing. I'm sure our admin will move this if they disagree with my theory. Some of them seem to have become rather over-fond of the edit button :stir:
The ones i suggested to start off with were......
People
bokeh
my job
self portrait
broken
water
represent a song
bizarre
illumination
animals
Some of these were carried over from the last poll.
So let us know if you have any that you feel should be included, and if any of mine are pants then please tell me why!
"My Job" is pants..I don't actually work :flipoff:
"My Job" is pants..I don't actually work :flipoff:

'Course not... you're a photographer! :D
No problem, so that leaves about 45mins for you lot to get in your last minute submission or change the one you already posted :)
I've left mine as it is...I'm racing ahead in 3rd position at the moment with 0%
The Oly users group that I have little to do with now used to allow you to vote for as many entries as you like. That way I could vote for both of the pictures I like. The law of averages still produces a winner.
I can't decide yet so I'll wait a while then maybe toss a coin. Both that I like have no votes yet :)

(In best Nicolas Cage with long hair and tough guy voice) Put.. the.. bunny.. back.. in.. the.. box. :nono:
so how do you know if we don't vote for ourselves? :p he he he,j/k. I can't believe I have 3 votes, whoo hooo!
I can check in the admin control panel who voted for who, although lets be honest, its only a little fun and to show off our stuff, the voting is just for extra interaction.
just a little bump for those who haven't voted yet!
Pictures on the sticky thing that steve made on the top of this forum!
I just voted. I might even enter next time.
I hope 'bokeh' doesn't win. I don't even know what it is. :Ponders:
Some kind of DOF stuff...whatever that is ;)

Interesting actually. :)
If you have not yet voted you have only a little time left..get in there before it closes folks :)
There seems to be some kind of technical error with the Poll.
I got all my inlaws and workmates to vote for mine and it still shows zero.
Last chance people, the poll closes tonight so if you have not yet voted there is still a little time left.
The poll is closed, the voting over, and the results are in :)
So full deserved congratulations to Mr Gandhi, not only for submitting the most popular photo but also for organising and making the Bi-weekly assignment a success.
Well done and thanks to everyone that either submitted a photo, voted on the entries or even more thanks to those that did both. I must add that the standard and variety of the entries was great. Some great interpretations presented.
The next round has already begun; the subject as voted for by the masses is illumination.
Hopefully this will also be supported well.
