View Full Version : Competition - Round 8 - Public Highway
Just a little bump, reminder that the closing date is just under 2 weeks away.
Come on people, get snapping :D
I think (hope?) I've got mine sorted. Who's running this one? Gonna wait until the endish though in case I can get the one I really wanted!
All bribes to be sent to Bod. I hear he's a bit of a stickler, but is partial to a fine Scottish malt.
Still nothing from me, and the deadline is looming. :annoyed:
Still nothing from me, and the deadline is looming. :annoyed:
I know, I looked only this morning expecting a whiskey bottle from you, and nada.
Better get your skates on :D
I can send cheap wine if thats any use, otherwise I will just have to fiddle the comp result by abusing my power ;)
Have one shot, but feel it's not up to standard of this site ;) . Think I might have shot myself in the foot with this theme  :D
This site has no standards, get it entered. If it is anything like the last round then you will have a 1 in 5 chance of winning anyway

Get it entered indeed.
Infact I promise to come round to your house and throw used teabags at your windows if you don't enter.

That could be interesting. Have you checked out flight prices recently? :naughty:

To Evesham? I can fart it there quicker :D
(You can't beat a misunderstanding as a basis for some banter)...
Well the windows can't get any dirtier.....I refuse to pay for a window cleaner  Anyway caught a subject today for comp that I will shoot tomorrow if light is OK. I'll be entering something , don't worry.....it's the taking part that counts....until someone stumps up prizes :stir: ;)

Send all prizes to me for assessment and I promise to distribute the ones I don't like fairly amongst the winners ;)

After ive had a rummage of course!:p
Gotta get my third dibs in here :D
Oh great. So I get soggy fourths. Again

where the hell did that smiley come from?!?!
Im off out to get my shot in a minute!
where the hell did that smiley come from?!?!
LOL looks like the smilie for a "butter face" :D
I haven't a clue what to shoot :headshake
Me neither.
Been carrying a p+s around for 2 weeks now. Not taken it out of my pocket yet :(
I got up at 6am this morning and spent until 1pm in and around Munich just to get a shot for this round of the competition. Only just got back in now so not had chance to look through my efforts but as it will probably be my last chance, I will have to use one of the photos from today even if they are all no good.
Its a little harder for me as well because I have to try to aviod anything that is "German" being in the frame as well...that makes it really tricky ;)
What , like a BMW, Merc, Audi or VW ? ;)
LOL looks like the smilie for a "butter face" :D
what the HELL is a 'butter face' ? Or don't I want to know?
As far as the competition is concerned I think I may be on the cusp of my definitive work! LOL! Saw the shot today whilst driving on the way top somewhere. Just gotta get up teal early tommorrow to bag it before I have to start work I'm not sure the kudos of a potential win is worth the getting up at 6am and then the 4 mile hike to the location. not in this weather. Especially when somebody will only whip my ass anyways ;)
..... Especially when somebody will only whip my ass anyways ;)
If your shot is anywhere near as good as your Autumn shot , then I'm not entering :thumb:
behave. It's oversharpened and the highlights are blown. ;)
dont forget kids, one week left! We would like a good turnout for this competition too, much better than 5 entries please! It doesnt matter if you dont think your shot is going to be good enough, enter it anyway because you never know!
I'll take a shot of something just to make up the numbers you never know someone could vote for mine by accident LOL
Just submitted my entry, I will be lucky to get any votes this time around but at least it will help make up the numbers.

Hmmph!! You fool no-one Kemo Sabe. :nono:
Hmmph!! You fool no-one Kemo Sabe. :nono:
Nope :headshake
Actually I was being serious, I do have a few more suitable shots that I would have preferred to submit but they all have something that makes them identifiable with Germany and that makes them no use for an anonymous competition.
Who thought up that stupid rule anyway? :eek13:
Who thought up that stupid rule anyway? :eek13:
*ahem* ;) /Looks above :D
ive got my entry to go in, it will make steves look good i think, but at least im having a go!
I have something I could enter in the spirit of making up the numbers. I have been singularly uninspired by anything I have seen round here that fits the topic.
Well not completely true, I have seen 2 great shots but they were fleeting and no camera to hand :(
Before I email it - do I remove exif or leave that to someone else?
Hmm maybe I'll wait a couple of days... just in case I see something.
as long as the image is the correct size, otherwise it gets disqualificationalised!

I would wait if you think you may get a better shot before the closing date as once submitted, you are not allowed to change your entry.
It would also help if you can make sure the picture is within the size rules for the competition and any possible way of linking it to you is removed..so no names on the picture or border and if you have your name in the EXIF, it would be helpful to strip that as well.
Cheers
It says 600 pixels but no file size limit? - I can save mine at 226k if I wanted to (though it looks the same at less than 100k)
I was more thinking camera make might be a clue as to who is who if it is in exif.
I didn't realise it didn't show a limit. If you could keep the file size to say 160kb max that would be great. I will add it into the rules now and for any that have already been submitted, I am sure that Marcel will reduce the file size if needed.

Having just checked it appears that you are mistaken...
Your entry should be reduced to no bigger than 600 pixels along its longest edge with a maximum file size of 160kb. This includes any borders that you may or may not want to add. The size restriction will help protect the images from being stolen/copied and also ensure that all pictures are viewed under the same restrictions.

Not to worry though ;)
As i get to the site via the home page there I see a big box with a 'competition' link in it....
which takes me to...
http://www.thephotographyforums.com/?page=comps
which tells me the rules and how to enter.
Maybe it does not tell me all the rules :Ponders:
:whistling
:stir:
a *cough* admin error....
However!
I strongly recommend getting the image down to the right size, as the gallery compression that is applied to oversize images(when ive set it right)makes them look like ZX spectrum games by the times its finished!
That's great, I am glad you spotted our deliberate mistake :whistling
Thanks..I will get that sorted. :thumb:
I have corrected the *cough* admin error ;) so all should now be well.
If you find anything else that is incorrect in posts or info on the site please do let us know so that we keep everything right.
Cheers
right ok, I'm (maybe) confused now! How come we have different sizes for posting in thread and competitions/gallery? I thought we were working on a standard size across all of the formats?
Surely this would be far more sensible?
A lot of us use the gallery for posting in the threads, where the limit is 800px, but then we are limited to 600px for the gallery itself and for competitions?
Am I not the only one whop finds this a little off kilter?
Or have I got the wrong end of the stick again?
I suppose it does seem a bit odd. 600 pixels is the limit for Gallery pics. After a poll on what res most folks ran their desktops at, we allowed off - site images posted directly in threads up to a max of 800 pixels on the longest side, with links to larger pics off -site being permissable. Obviously larger off-site images linked here don't affect our bandwidth costs ( well- Steve's actually) but the idea behind that is to keep the site fairly responsive, particularly for people on slow connections.
You only have to look round member albums to see there are some pretty desirable images, which are highly prone to being nicked by the unscrupulous, and keeping them low res at least limits their usefulness and lessens the risk to some extent.
ah, I see now. Ok, cool.
Was just curious.
Think I may've slipped through the net also on the gallery image size :whistling
*please don't make me resize all my images* It wasn't my fault. Honest guv!
LOL. Just to clarify - the 800 pixels thing came in because people didn't see why there should be any limit on off- site images and this was a compromise position. It's still largely misunderstood, but the main concern is to just keep threads nice and snappy, like an alligator sandwich. :coat:
So to sum up (and to make sure I'm right)
Photo sharing + critique - 800 pixels longest side and 160kb in size
Competition + Galleys - 600 pixels longest side and also 160kb in size
the main concern is to just keep threads nice and snappy
Am I being thick but doesn't a 800 pixel @ 160 kb download in the same time as a 600 pixel @ 160kb :Ponders: ? So it wouldn't matter time wise if someone posted a picture with a res of 1920 x 1200 that was 160kb. Ok it would look incredibly bad and nearly everyone would have to scroll to see it but they'd see it as quickly as a 100 x 50 picture sized 160kb
I'd like to conclude by stating that I don't really care as I don't have a gallery and my competition entries (when I find one to shoot) will not warrant any extra size due to resembling something brown in colour, squidgy in texture and smelling predominantly of methane

Competition + Galleys - 600 pixels longest side and also 160kb in size
That is correct…almost :p
In Competitions you are allowed up to 1000pix to enter a true panoramic shot (the definition of a true panoramic is at our discretion to stop people cropping images just to display bigger for more impact) This rule was brought in, as showing a panoramic at a max of 600pix wide is unfair.
Am I being thick but doesn't a 800 pixel @ 160 kb download in the same time as a 600 pixel @ 160kb :Ponders: ? Ok it would look incredibly bad and nearly everyone would have to scroll to see it but they'd see it as quickly as a 100 x 50 picture sized 160kb
The reasons are a combination physical size and file size which are connected to speed and ease of viewing..160kb is the same across the site to a) keep my costs at a reasonable level b) keep the whole site snappy for the less fortunate people who have slow connections c) because at the physical sizes we allow there is no need to have them any bigger to show detail. d) it might help deter potential image thieves.
The 600pix in the Members Gallery was set at the very beginning and matched what we had on the forum at that time, later after a debate and poll; we increased the forum size to a max of 800 at the request of members and left the actual choice of showing them at that max size up to the individual. This suits the most used monitor resolution and allows images to be seen without scrolling on the forums. As we already had many members with Galleries we maintained the 600pix rule to stop any unfairness to existing and new members and to discourage theft from the one place where it is easy to gather many images. As pointed out above, one or two galleries do have a 800pix size limit, this was a Admin error and done totally on a misunderstanding, as that was our mistake and the people concerned had already began using their Galleries it would have been unfair and not very professional for us to then change that and make those members re-edit their photos.
I'd like to conclude by stating that I don't really care as I don't have a gallery and my competition entries (when I find one to shoot) will not warrant any extra size due to resembling something brown in colour, squidgy in texture and smelling predominantly of methane
It’s a shame you have chosen not to take a free gallery here, with regard to the competition entries, that’s also a shame as I believe we have a very low turnout again this month so anything submitted will be in with a good chance. My comp submission sounds very similar to what yours would be and I am glad it is only being show at 600pix so that it will not offend to many people :D
Hopefully that answers the questions?

I haven't taken a free gallery as I've got enough webspace of my own for now :thumb: , so I'll let some less fortunate soul use yours. I didn't say I wasn't going to enter anything just that it probably will be carp (deliberate spelling error , assuming this to be a "familly safe site"?)
In fact had a sleepless night  trying to think of a shot that wasn't a cliche, looked good, showed reasonable technique and that I could manage to photograph. :censored: if I can think of one will settle for looks ok now
i have got one, its crap (not family friendly ;))
just trying to remember where to send it lol

:)
LOL i already found it on the front page, and sent it !
I will get nil points again but feel i at least entered something lol
Well, my entries in. I've managed to miss the shot I wanted as work has been getting in the way!
Closing date 18.00 on the 27th November, so its basically last call this weekend ladies and gentlemen. Don't miss the deadline if you are holding back that stunning shot. ;)
The deadline has passed, and I've been too busy to get a shot in. Got a new girlfriend you see... ;)
Competition now closed, entries in, collated, and are being chalked up and pinned to the boards as we speak.
Expect a gallery of entries for your perusal sometime shortly after Coronation Street ;)
The deadline has passed, and I've been too busy to get a shot in. Got a new girlfriend you see... ;)
You're excused then Joe. As long as you're not wasting your spare time! :D
Entries are up (feel priveleged, I missed the first 5 minutes of Corrie for you lot :p)....
Please PM me your votes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. No voting for your own, and all entrants must vote.
Voting closes 18:00pm next Sunday 4th December.
Oooh.... some good entries there! Good luck everyone.
I have just had a look..whats the crack with the size on number 7. Has it been uploaded incorrectly of is that just the size it was sent in?
I'm afraid that's the size it was sent in. I did email the entrant and explain, welcoming a resubmission before the closing date, but have yet to have a reply, and thought it would be more unfair to omit the entry altogether.
PS. For ease of clickability and things, here's the link to the gallery.
http://www.thephotographyforums.com/gallery/comp_round08
Thats a shame, hopefully the person who submitted it will send in a bigger version that can be changed.
:stupid: Where do I view the pictures?
See Marcels post above or go to the galleries and they are in there, along with all the previous rounds. ;)
I was going to enter a pic I had entered into a compo elsewhere, but I was told I couldnt, which is fair enough.
Unfortunately there is one image on there (not naming any names) thats was entered into the same compo that my other image was entered into.
Any thoughts anyone on this? :)

HTH
If I was handling this round and recognised a shot due to it being posted elsewhere it would have been disallowed. For those that recognise a picture that has been posted elsewhere, I would suggest not voting for that shot (if it figured in your top three) or if you think it is unfair, PM Marcel with the number and he will remove it. Everyone knows that this competition is anonymous and this has even been discussed elsewhere too, so the member who submitted that shot should be aware of that rule.
Nice to see some more entries this time! Will be interested to see who comes out on top this time.
Just as an aside, next year, why don't we have a running total for the year? I think if we had a 'photography forums photographer of the year' it might encourage people to enter on a regular basis. I know it's slightly unfair to those that join halfway through the year, but if enough people enter every month then I think the lead developed would be marginal enough to even it back out again.
I'm sure somebody's already thought of this and there are a million reasons not to do it, I just can't think of any at the moment!
The ones that got away.....
Remember the old guy in 'life of grime' on TV where the house was stuffed floor to ceiling with junk? I saw a car like that in a traffic queue - back window to windscreen (looked like it was always there- not a trip to the dump) ....nice busy road too...No Camera :(
Another time I saw this perfect street panorama - almost 3D like - reflected in the back of a Fiat Panda.....No Camera :(

I'm sure somebody's already thought of this and there are a million reasons not to do it, I just can't think of any at the moment!
The main reason why we have no running totals is due to the way the judging is currently done. We only ask for a top three so it would be unfair to everyone that might just miss out on any points and if one person submits a stunning shot then that can give them an unassailable lead.
Just as being near the top would encourage regular entries (to maintain a good placing) not receiving many votes and having a lower placing could do exactly the opposite. Why bother if you have no chance?
Also the instance of people recognising a submitted photograph also makes a running total somewhat unfair in my opinion.
Fair enough then! I knew SOMEBODY would make me sense!
some good photos there, thanks to everyone who has entered this round, dont forget to vote! I recognise the shot from another competition too....
I think WRT recognition, I don't think it would be fair to stipulate complete exclusivity with each entry.
However, common sense does come into play, and a shot shouldn't be submitted if it's likely to be quite easily be spotted and associated with a particular member, due to it being shown elsewhere.
While we want the competition to be as anonymous as possible, to be too strict would be quite restrictive.
Like I say though, common sense should come into play.
If I have submitted a shot to a forum with 5 members who only speak swahilian (and aren't members here) and I wanted to also enter it here, then you bet your bottom dollar I would be doing.
But likewise, I wouldn't enter a shot that I've just been given credit for on the front page of BBC News. It's all about likelihood of being spotted.
If I spot an entry being shown on another forum, but I can't tie in that user to this forum, then I see no reason why it should be disallowed. If though, forum names are exactly the same, etc then it becomes tricky.
I personally haven't recognised any of the shots from this round, except one, which was shown on someones website I was browsing. But as I know who has entered what, then I'm allowed to know :D
 I missed it this round, sorry guys. Alot of good entries though. I'll be sure to vote for sure! Good luck to those who entered.

The ones that got away.....
There's a track down the side a the river in Bristol that all the runners use that you can see from the top of the cliffs so I was going to take a photo of them (public) from the top of the cliffs (high) etc etc etc. 'cept that's what I was trying to do when I dropped my camera. :(
Sh*t Sammy, how bad is it? :(
Now then! who's forgotten to vote on this one? I think the voting closes tonight. So if you've entered, you'd better vote!
And when do we get the results?
I wanna know if I've come last, or second from last!?!
its called Building to a climax!
or Marcel had done a runner with the massive prize fund ;)
My mistake.
Winners are up!
Marcel just forgot tell anyone ;)
All votes in, counted and collated, and the top three places, in no particular order except for winner first, second place second, and third place third :

Well done to all those who entered. It was a good competition this round, some great shots entered.
Regards
well done to everyone that entered and voted, particularly liked all 3 of them!
Well done everyone! Bod, I'm sure people would liketo know how they faired in the voting. :)
Congratulations Steve, Pete and Stepheno!
All worthy Entries.
So what's the next subject gonna be then?
Congratulations Steve, Petemc and Stepheno :thumb:
I actually entered a rubbish one to enhance your chances.
Well done everyone.
Congrats to Steve, Pete, and Stephano.:clap::clap:
I might get the chance to enter a few now.
Well done guys, I've not really had the time to get the camera out lately either, hate these dark mornings and nights.
Well done chaps !!!! Now choose an easier theme please ;)

Thanks folks - I'm just pleased to be in such illustrious company. Pete, it's the best take on the light trail shot I've seen and Steve, I had you down for a different photograph.

Congratulations Steve, Petemc and Stepheno! Their all great shots! Well done. Cheers,

Congratulations Guys great shots :thumb:

I am struggling with a decent subject for the next round. TBH I didn't think I had a chance of winning so gave it no thought at all. If anyone has any suggestions other than "Christmas" then please post away.
If only to widen the catchment/scope of the theme...
Celebration
Festivities/Festive
Winter (Ill get me coat :p)
but I do like christmas, and would be happy with that....
represent a song is my current fav!
I don't want anything to do with Christmas or the festive season as by the time this round of the comp closes everyone will have had enough.
I can see the draw of gandhi's suggestion but wonder how many people would enter if I actually chose that.
got to agree with Steve, there are gonna be oddles of comps with Christmas or winter as the theme, lets be a bit different, thats what we are good at!

You could have Snow - but then some people wont get any and Steve will probably get too much :D
regards
Easter ;) :getmecoat . ...... Animal ?
What about "Sunset" ? There is one almost everyday and just about everyone will be able to photograph it from a different location.
What about "Sunset" ? There is one almost everyday and just about everyone will be able to photograph it from a different location.
Nothing wrong with the idea but the sun sets a bit early here at the moment, certainly before work finishes. That leaves the weekends and at this time of year there's no guarantee of sun :p
As it's nearly Christmas, how about Easter? (the eggs will be in the shops soon)
I like the idea of sunsets or even sunrises as you don't have to get up too early this time of year to get one.
Gary Bagshawe
06-12-2005, 11:48
I like the sunset idea but thought maybe URBAN LANDSCAPE or URBAN JUNGLE
Okay, in answer to non-seasonal festive ones, how about:
people
emotion
water
touch
speed
animal
Just a quick selection.
I like the sunset idea but thought maybe URBAN LANDSCAPE or URBAN JUNGLE
Both of them could be conveyed in the sunset/sunrise theme if you think carefully, as could many other subjects...it sets a theme not a particular subject ;)
Sun? (not particularly set or rise), also leaves a bit of scope....
Is that not more subject than theme though?

How about a more animated theme that will get people out of their comfort zone like sport for example?
How about a more animated theme that will get people out of their comfort zone like sport for example?
Because as soon as the topic gets anything remotely challenging, people just don't enter. There is no point having a competition with no entries.
Sad but true Steve, sad but true.
:(
The only thing I would suggest is a theme for this month where people don't have to travel too far from home (its cold & most people will have xmas duties on days off) . Anything that can be shot indoors would probably pull in the best number of entries ?
Well I'm hoping that a good suggestion by Steve will allow both. I guess you need to keep it general for this to happen though.
How about something like..."Approaching darkness"? That way we can either take photos of sunsets, or dark urban alleyways or indoor shots involving lurvely Green & Black's dark chocolate.
... or indoor shots involving lurvely Green & Black's dark chocolate.
Obviously that'll just be the crumpled up wrapper...
How about "things around the house" that should cover a mulitude of sins and allow for evryone to photograph something. It could be Christmas decorations, kitchen utensils, watches, the sunset over a house, your wife, your children etc?
How about "things around the house"

Glad they don't read this forum :D

Right....is that it sorted then :dizzy:

cool.
i will make a new post later on today, time to get thinking, kids!
Here are the complete scores from the round.....
The numbers basically mean how many votes were recieved for that position.
So for example, 2 people put Gary Bagshawe's shot down as their 2nd place, and 1 person as their third.
1st 2nd 3rd
1 Gary Bagshawe 0 2 1
2 CT 0 3 2
3 stepheno 4 3 0
4 Steve 7 2 2
5 Bachs 0 0 1
6 IanC_UK 0 0 1
7 daveyuk 0 1 1
8 gandhi 0 1 2
9 Gemok 0 0 1
10 RopertP 0 2 1
11 petemc 5 2 1
12 KenCo1964 1 1 3
13 EosD 0 0 1
14 jump 0 0 0
ohhh look at me in nearly last place!

some one actually put ME in their top three! :laugh1: come on own up who was it?
Edit finding the 6 dancing bannas strangly hypnotic.
I got off my bike on a bridge over the north circular road, took my old Oly camera out of my pocket and pressed the button. Glad someone liked it :)
Thanks.
Ropert - the well known typing error.
<apologies to spike milligan>
ps. have to agree about the bannas. Bananas are good too.
I'd just like to say too, that I deliberately didn't vote.
If I had entered then I would have voted as per the rules, but as I didn't enter then I thought it unfair of me to vote, as I knew whose shot was who's.
I love hypnotic bananananananananas.
