I'd like to know about software for, or webcam/software combination suitable for, controlling a webcam.
I'd like to control the exposure time because I want to take pictures for purpose of computer vision, that is automatic software analysis of what's in them and where. Exact timing of the photo moment and sharp edges on moving objects kind of would make my image analysis alot easier...

I'd love to order a webcam to take a still image with something like a 1/30 seconds exposure time or shorter. 1/20 might do, if at least I know exactly how long it is.
I've looked into remote controlling compact cameras, and I will try that too. But I want to examine the webcam option too. Manufacturers are surpricingly unwilling to share information and their software, as far as I know, is pretty lousy for my purpose.
