View Full Version : Danger of Death!
Well, if I put 'Portland Bill' Nobody would look, would they?
Anyways,
When most people hear the words 'gales & storms in the english channel' they'd put some more coals on the fire and fill up the whisky glass.
Some form of mania must've overcome me as I somehow found myself at Portland Bill with no recollection of getting there ;)
I got soaked twice, hailed on, dried out from the wind and then got soaked again by the waves, stupidy turning my back on the sea for a moment.
I think I spent more time cleaning the lens than taking photos and the the D200 will probably fall apart in a puff of rust tomorrow morning.
It was the most immense fun I've had for a while :) :) :D

The mono conversion works well, and you have some good lead in lines, taking the eye nicely into the shot. I like it, but I think you could get away with more contrast in the sky to give it a little more moodiness. Your moment of madness appears to have been well worth it.

I know what you mean cheryl.
Unfortunately the sky is quite noisy as I was using ISO400 and it was quite about -1.5EV so has had some recovery done post capture.
due to the amount of sea-spray & wind I was having to handhold with the camera set on S mode @100th of a second just to get something vaguely sharp. It was then a case of cleaning the front element of the lens in the shelter of a rock, covering the lens with my hand, leaping out, framing and machine-gunning off a few shots before having to repeat the process.
It was so windy I could hardly stand-up at some points lol!

Great capture! The things we all go through for our art, eh?
Well done Gandhi!

Completely agree with this :)
Just try changing the contrast on the sky and see what difference it makes.
Put a noise on this also, and it looked good on my screen

Very nice!
I like this too..... lots.
I can see why people are saying that the sky should have more moodiness and that was my first thought too....... but I think it could be wrong.
The way the ground is so dark and moody but the sky is actually quite bright kinda turn the "normal" take on its head. That might be part of what makes it so good.

Think I agree with that....the only thing that bothers me is the white thing sticking up in the centre of frame. I haven't read the full thread so don't know if it has already been mentioned but i'd consider cloning that out.

I'm not personally a great lover of frames but that together with the mood of the picture is superb, I could hang that straight onto my wall.
I am not going to comment on the picture too light, too dark as my monitor is all over hte place today, but all I can comment on is 'I Like It' :)
:agree:
Its a great shot, the b&w conversion really works:thumbs:
Anymore to see?:naughty:
Spence
Thanks for the feedback peeps!
Sorry about the late reply, have been busy visiting my little nephew, working a lot etc so haven't had the time to reply to everybody individually!
re: points raised.....
Too much contrast in the sky made it a smidge too overpowering for my taste. If anybody wants to have a fiddle and show me then I'll gladly have my opinions changed!
the memorial in the middle........, yeah, probably should clone it out and when it goes to print I probably will. TBH I don't think it detracts that much, but the shot is stronger without it!
There maybe some more Spencer. I took about 150 shots, most of which are blurred/spoilt by grot on the lens alas. It really was VERY inclement to say the least lol. It was quite last minute and I was only there for about an hour and a half in the end. next time I have a moment of madness I'll PM you, unless you wanna send me your mobile number and I can txt or call then!
I think its an excellent shot, which would look good on many a wall.
Very nice indeed!

Ghandi - I'd say the shot is worth all the soakings you had if you ask me!!
Absolutely excellent - would be happy with that on my wall! :)

abooooot 2and a bit hours down. nearly 3 on the way back. Was only there for about 90 minutes too.
Allworth it, as it so often is!
I like it, making it b&w gives it a nice moody feeling, nice one.
