Or find somewhere they fly lower?
You'll probably be better off not using digital zoom, and cropping the image. You'll end up with a smaller image, but its all real information, not made up.
I've been taking some pictures of birds recently, and with them, taking pics early morning or late afternoon so the sun is shining up at the bird (or plane) makes all the underneath detail show up.
I'm normally good at identifying planes, but I have no clue what that is >_>
It looks kinda like a hawk, but it's just too far away and pixelated to really tell.
I think that this shot highlights the limitations of short-zoom P&S's. Technique doesn't matter in this situation - the plane is just too far away for the camera to take a good picture of it. I discovered that after an airshow with my A75 (and it was one of the reasons I bought an SLR).
Good luck with future shots, hopefully with better equipment!

Looks like a Harrier to me ..
Although it is very small, it is quite sharp, which is a good thing !!

I guess you could dodge the plane a bit to make it lighter. Other than that, its probably the best you could have done with the kit you have (unless the plane was going to get ridiculously close to you :) )
