View Full Version : The Break Room........

Just some pictures. Idyllic. Trying to find my old style. Unlike my sports work, perhaps these are awkward images, not cropped perfectly. No leading lines or ideal symmetry. not worried about noise. In my quest for photograhic perfection I missed the beat. Sound like one of those god awful Leica users now.....

If I took anything from that program about photography on BBC4 is that unconventional works which I suppose makes it conventional.

When I first started looking, I thought to myself, why the heck would these photos be posted....but when I went back to the top and took a few moments, I loved the series.

I don't think any one picture stands out, but as a series, it really works. They would look good as small pictures dotted around a single room (perhaps the Break room!) or as a multi-aperture large picture.

Brilliant - thats what I am trying to evoke. Thanks for getting it. Look, sometimes we look at the best work and overlook what makes it great. Its about black and white, tonation, poor form. As I say when I teach photography...its not just a chair, its an empty chair. Massive difference.

:agree: with Andy, when viewed as a series they are a great set. I have to say this is not a room I would like to take my break in :)

Thats cool, shame though as there are lots of great things to snap in the room.

Swivel chair photography?

You just sit & spin & fire away?

Soz don't get it at all - but then I'm not very 'arty'. To me the Mona Lisa has an ugly smirk, not an enigmatic smile :shake:

****in' great!

These perfectly convey the (I'm guessing) gloomy, run down feel of the 'Break Room'.

Fantastic series!

Yeah i like the set, looking back and seeing the things which should make them 'not work' makes them work in a way...

Not really my thing but I enjoyed the irony of this, well thought out

Well thought out Cobra? I wonder if the 'Bull' shot is a comment on the imagery too?

I've seen stuff like this before sent to make arty-peeps go weak at the knees while the artist laughs all the way to the bank. I haven't got such before and don't now, so it could be a 'great' straight series, or a mickey take - only the originator knows, and frankly, I'd be sad if it was a straight series - that's not so funny

Well, its a fair comment. I suppose only I know if it is real work, art or comedy. Its a simple photo essay is all, on a bleak room and as an aside, just showing how easy it is to shoot good imagery akin to what the BBC show harped on about.

Dave, no offence but perhaps this is why you shoot the same wedding pictures week in week out, or the same white back ground portrait stuff? That's what I dont get.

Go out and shoot something different...its fun.

It would be a shame if we all liked the same thing. This series is not for me. It just looks like you were bored and snapped away at all and sundry.

Is it art? Somebody once left their bed unmade and the art world went oooohh and aaarr. An enormous price tag followed and Tracey is now known to the rest of us.

Glad you're looking at other subjects to add to your portfolio, just sorry you've chosen these.

mho of course.

Actually I missed that one :D
I really don't know if he was taking the urine or not, only D.G. knows the answer, and if he can make a fortune from it then well, why not? As I said not really my thing but hey its a good job that we don't all think ( capture) alike or the forum would be full of Tigers or spiders or rocks or portraits or birds or .................

Shooting kids is immense fun, shooting cock-eyed light switches and chairs while apparently bored... leaves me cold

Each to their own then eh?

This set has created an interesting debate. Personally I like the pics as a set. Like others, I was wondering what was going on until I'd scrolled down a bit. I do get it. Some pics are "better" than others, but I don't think that's the point. This idea is not about an individual image and the majority of the pics simply wouldn't work on their own.

It shows an original thought. And for that reason alone, its to be applauded. I quoted the above for 2 reasons - (1) its not that easy to get good imagery - it requires some vision and an idea; (2) go out and have some fun  - do something different.

Its inspired me, that's for sure.

Oh, and for what its worth, I think the pic of the Metro half on and half off the shelf is the best, but I also like the chair leg kicking up the carpet a bit.

Shooting kids is immense fun,

Oh yes..... and the best answer to a lot of problems
Unfortunately its illegal :D
you could of course had said "snapping kids" but that would have been just as bad :D
as would "capturing" the whole thing is subjective just like the images ;)

And its quite intersting the way these images have brought about a debate, I wonder where we would be if I had said "Hmm dirty light switch crap" "and the image is p'ssed as well"

Yes, very much - and in essence thats my objective achieved as being honest, I did not really want people to like them. There is not really anything to get really. Just simple pictures.

Photography - its brilliant. Glad we had this debate.

I mean, really how different are these pictures to the god awful generic landscape pictures we see month in and out in various magazines, on flickr, here and other websites. An example being the bull ring in Birmingham. Look here -

Tbh thought, if I wanted an "arty" picture for my wall. I would rather have the one of the Bull Ring than any of yours.
That is simply just because that has more Oomph! And also, you can hardly tell what it is.

I quite like the plant on its own, but feel it may have a bit more to give if it was in colour. And, the newspaper and chair one....if there was more newspaper.

I can see how they work as a "set" but feel that it would only work as a set. And it'd be something that you'd have to submit for a college assignment or something.

Maybe I just dont get it?

If you think that Bull Ring image is in the same 'god awful' league as yours here, either you're potty or I am

When I first saw the shot of the light switch I thought what the bloody hell is this.
I then looked at all the rest.
All I can say is I love them.
They all add up together to make a near perfect whole.
The pic with the face and hand dont do anything to the set.

As to the Bullring shot I don't like that at all, it makes my eyes hurt.

By the way, I sat next to Tracey Emin in a restaurant the other day. For what it's worth, I quite like her unmade bed and have no problem with it being displayed and discussed as a piece of art or social commentary. However, it's something which, for me, would have no value as I am hardly going to display it at home.

Enough people have commented on these images and enough people have liked them for them for them to be classed as art as far as I am concerned. I would, however, not want to hang them on my wall or call a colleague over to show him how good they are.

A sheep cut in half by Damien Hurst is a piece of art, one cut in half by my butcher is dinner. If these photos had been posted by a less talented photographer I am sure the compliments would have been a lot less vocal.

For that, I congratulate you.

And that's why I thought he was taking the mickey - my 16 daughter (Art O-level looming) just had a look and described them both as individual shots and as a 'series' as... (well let's just say I told her off )

If this had been a newbie post with "I've just picked up a camera what do you think?" they'd have been shot down in flames - still made for a good laugh overall I guess

Off to have great fun now shooting more kids (oh, and to add even more 'fun' into the bargain, they are paying me too )

Play nicely please peeps, if you don't like an image then feel free to express your opinion but lets not have this de-evolve into anything other than constructive criticism :)

There is no need or excuse to be rude to other members so let's not start now.

I totally disagree with the comparison of these to a noobs shots.
Not everyone will be bowled over by the content of these, but Ive yet to see a noob who could expose a series of shots so consistently.

While I dont 'like' them, they have have provoked my interest and got me wondering if my 'getting it' is the same as Pete's 'got it'.

On the whole I find the content is pretty mundane and irrelevant but the photography is spot on.

Art for arts sake perhaps!

I like a couple of these shots and dont get the point to the others.

If they'e a set, presumably theres some sort of short story being told ? or at least series of events, correct me if I'm wrong.

The ones I like, I like because of the content, not because of what they mean as part of a set.

ftr, the ones I like are :

Both chair shots,

The plant,

The Metro paper,

The plant and the radio,

and The pot noodle.

The other have no relevence to anything as far as I can see.

ftr, dont much like the bullring shot either.

I like them as a set, I'd loose the twojust before the end with the blury face and hand as they seem totally out of place. The others all gel really well and I think give an excellent sense of the room. It;s also nice to see something completely different on here and hopefully you'll inspire a few more of the talented members here to push themselves out of their confort zones, it could produce some interesting results.

Ohh and if your just taking the mick :(
