Hi Tony, you have filled the frame with the tree which is good. The main problem is that the sky is blown out, if the sun had been going down behind you, for example, you would have captured the colour in the sky and the trees themselves would not have been so dark.

It is important to practice and get to understand the limitations of the camera, particularly with respect to the dynamic range of the scene you are shooting.

The Sky is a bit too blown for my liking, as it really draws your eye up to the top of the photograph.
You loose some detailing towards the bottom, was this taken handheld or with a tripod? Also, what ISO were you taking them at?
Some of the trees look a little out of focus, but again this could be camera shake, or windyness.

I think I'd recommend setting up some shots at home Tony, set up some lights (or natural light if you can manage to shoot during the day) & take some still life shots of things that take your fancy. Once you have a shot that you are happy with, alter some of the settings, either aperture or shutter speed & note down the settings & how they affected your results. Once you are familiar with the way that each setting, ISO, shutter speed & aperture affects your images I think you'll notice a massive improvement.

Images taken outside are affected by a great many conditions - changeable skies, wind, sunlight, shade, rain, etc. & you really need to have a good knowledge of your cameras settings before you will begin to get images that are technically sound.

Good on you for taking the feedback well by the way, am sure you'll start to really notice a difference in your standard of shots soon mate

Try taking a look at this website, It's really very helpful

Hi Tony,

the EXIF data says you took that picture with 1/60th second shutter speed, F/3.8 aperture, normal program, at 800 ISO (not 100 ISO...!) and flash fired (with red-eye reduction!).

The blur is caused by camera shake. So you need to use higher shutter speeds or learn to hold your camera really still.

And why ever did you use the flash on a subject over 100/200 feet away? Your flash is ineffective at anything over 15 feet subject distance. Using it anyway just drains your battery double quick. So find out how to switch off your flash and double your battery life.

This is what I could salvage of your pic. Tinkered with shadow/highlight, contrast, and USM.
