View Full Version : Playing with a mangled Holga

It's a very snowy Saturday here in Denver, so it's the perfect opportunity to mangle a plastic camera and see what happens.
I modified a $15 Holga (using tape, a butter knife, and some styrofoam) to shoot 35mm film. Normally the Holga shoots 120, but I thought it would be fun to shoot over the sprocket holes and see what happened.
Here's what happened.

The Holga's aperture and shutter speed are fixed, approximately f/13 and 1/100th. I pushed these a bit to suit the film speed and light.
Fun experiment.

Thanks, guys! Fraggle, these were taken this morning. It's REALLY coming down now. Might be the first blizzard of the year if it keeps up.
Here's one in landscape mode. Happy doggy close-up. LOL.

I love that sprocket effect! I've always wondered how it was created.
I must find a nice high resolution and make a few Photoshop brushes in that style.

I love the effects of the holga, How did you scan the 35mm with the sprocket holes?
Seeing your shots is tempting me to get one, but shot 120 film

That is awsome! Not sure which I am more jealous of, the cool shot/effect or the snow :(

Thanks, guys! It kept snowing all night, so we now have about six inches of fresh powder. It's very beautiful, and very quiet. It was about this time last year when we got our back-to-back blizzards, which dumped a total of seven feet of snow in a week. THAT was fun!
Natjag, I scanned the 35mm strips in a medium format neg carrier. It's not a perfect work-around, as the scans look softer in focus than the negs, but it's the best I can do. Obviously scanning in a 35mm carrier won't work as it would cut off the cool sprockets. I'm going to attempt to print a few of these in the darkroom today, but will have the same flm holder issue. That's part of the fun, though. ;)
