Sorry it so basic a question...but I am looking at getting a 50mm 1.8 and I'm a D40 owner. Obviuously I am happy to manually focus but does the metering work? I am not quite sure about how compatable the D range of lenses are.

Thanks in advance

Martin

it depends which 50mm 1.8 you are after! I take it that it will be the Nikkor, so if its a newish one, it will meter fine. As long as the lens is AI or AIS it will meter on the D40.

I have a D40X and am experimenting with some manual lenses, as they cost peanuts on ebay. I have just taken delivery of a Helios 44-2 58mm f2 and a Pentacon 50mm f1.8. They are both M42 screw mounts so i'm just waiting on the adapter to arrive before I can use them. Neither will meter, but having a preview screen makes that a complete non issue really, plus they only cost around £20 for the pair!!!

I'm doing the same with my D40, Bought a nikkor HC 28mm wideangle last week. Manual focus is fine by me :)

If I had a D40 and wanted to focus manually Id be seriously tempted to order myself a Katz-Eye screen for it.
It allows you to focus using the old split prism method.
Its probably more accurate than using auto focus to be honest, and definitely more accurate than manually focusing through a clear screen.
They're about $95, that works out to about £40 at the current exchange rate.

and you would have to pay someone to fit it if you're not brave enough to do it yourself!!

i've never really had a problem focusing manually, but a prism would make it a bit easier. The introduction of the prism effects the metering, but i think it's a 1/3 stop at most.
