View Full Version : What do you plan to add to your kit in 2008?
Idea shamelessly stolen from a thread I came across on another forum.
With the new year nearly upon us im sure we have all set ourself targets and projects for the coming year or maybe we have assesed our kit and theres something we have wanted to buy and just not got round to it.
What are you all planning to add to our kit in 2008?
Im thinking of the following -
*Set of filters (Cokin 100mm ones, grads and polarizer)
*Small/medium size bag to take body plus one or two lenses
*New body once the motorsport season starts, maybe a 40d or if I can stretch to it maybe a 2nd hand 1d mk2n
*Interfit ex150 home studio kit

Filter set with adapters as I have 52/62 & 72 mm apertures on my lens currently. Possibly Cokin or similar.
Tripod - Manfrotto or similar, bought a cheap one when I bought my kit 4-5 months ago thinking its just a tripod!
Thinking of some cheap studio lights
CISS for my new R2400 printer.
90 degree eyepiece adapter possibly, so that I can see what is in the viewfinder easier whilst taking macro shots of jewellery for my wife!
I think I need a new 1.4x TC. Mine seems to be buggered :(
I'm in the happy position of being pretty well content now with the kit I have but it's taken me three years to get there! The only major purchase I forsee this coming year is a 40D body, but there's no rush and I need to start spending some dosh on things which have been neglected around the hacienda. So I'm told anyway.:D

Well as I'm buying a new flashgun this week rather than in the new yr... I'm going to get a second camera body, as a backup, a few more batteries for my camera and some for my flashgun. Getting my current flashgun fixed and using it as a backup.
Lens wise there's none I want, although the nifty fifty is tempting.
Might get some extension tubes for macro shots, but all depends on funds and whether hubby will let me spend lots more cash ha ha.

I dream of one more lens to add to the line up. It'll either be a 300 f/2.8 or a 200 f/2. Have to wait and see price and performance of the new Canon 200 before deciding.
Ooh, I've got a Nokton 58mm F/1.4 SLII on order :D
Doesn't stop me lusting after everything else though... I still want something that will go from 200-500mm and I want loads more flash units too. Oh, and a bag to put 'em in. A battery grip. Oh and that Nikon D3 thingy wouldn't go a miss either. WANT WANT WANT. :)

50mm f1.8 for sure
Spare battery & some more SD cards
Maybe 10-20mm and a flash
possibly a new tripod
Well since I've only just got my first SLR, the 350D, for Christmas, in 2008 I think I'll try to invest in the 50mm 1.8, a longer zoom lens for some basic wildlife photography, and some filters (UV, grad, polarizing etc). I'll also get a tripod.
Don't think I will be adding anything this year.
I just can't take the beatings anymore, when the wife finds out.

Will have to be a 5D this year and hopefully a 30 or 40D to have two back-up bodies and pension the 350 at last:D
I am hoping to place my order with Ian (kerso) for the long debated 70-200 2.8 IS lens in the next few weeks. Then during my visit to Focus on Imaging on the Sunday, I am going to buy another bag - yes another one. This time, I will 'see' it first and not trust the photo on 'tinternet as I keep getting it wrong :bang: This time the bag needs to carry my 17" lappy, 2 bodies, 5 lenses, plus accessories and be complete with wheels and handle. Any ideas Guys?

Trying to work out to get the D300 of the 70-200 F2.8 VR
I think the only thing I need to add in 2008 is my finger on the shutter button, I've made poor use of my kit for the latter part of this year.

As I only have the 18-135 kit lens at the moment I am on the verge of ordering a nikkor afs 300 f4 ifed, then maybe a couple of low light primes inc nifty fifty, would love a 70-200vr but to much money for me( well swmbo will kill me anyway when the 300 arrives):bonk:
I'm actually pretty happy with my kit right now, the only thing that is a "want" rather than a need is a faster lens for motorsport, but I've had pretty good results with the lens that I have so that can wait until next year maybe (2009, not 2008).
The only thing I need is more ability, time to practice and time to edit my photos - oh and a decent course tutor as I'm not too happy with my BTEC in photography from the local college :(

There is so much I want. But after breaking my laptop and my desktop packing up I need a new computer, so that will probably take up any chance of a big purchase. I'm thinking about changing my Sigma flash gun and I will be getting a light stand next month.
I'd really like the Nikon D300 but with a shutter release count of only 3200 on my D80 I can't justify an upgrade just yet.

Not much, in order of priority:
Nikon D300
Motordrive for above
Nikon 70-200 2.8 AF-S VR
Lowe-Pro Slingshot 300 (If it'll fit a D300 with 70-200 attached!)
Nikon SB-800
Sigma 10-20mm
Plus various odds and sods.
I'll let you know whether I get past item number one!
Nothing! I mustn't spend any more on photography gear this year :bonk:
No!

I would like a Speedlite 580

The list seems never-ending, no particular order and some of them are very low priority:
New Computer

Voigtlander 15mm or 21mm lens
Black Bessa L
Black Olympus OM2n with normal and telephoto lens
66 or 645 MF camera

Oooh. Plenty.
Sigma 10-20mm
Set of filters, probably cokin
430ex flash
A better telephoto lens
A 40D body
But I think the 10-20 and the flash will be the only things I do buy.
Moneys tight, etc.
I want a better lens for motorsport, currently favouring a Sigma 120-300 f2.8
but I also want a new computer, toying with a mac, can't decide if a Macbook or an iMac is a better option, or a macmini.
I would love to upgrade to a Nikon D80. Hopefully I maybe able to do that sometime during 2008.
Good luck everyone with your wishes, lol. :)
The next thing I want is a 24-70, a good monopod, x1.4 and x2 TC,and last on my list is a 24-105 oh nearly forgot a BG-E4.maybe a fisheye lens, after all a whole year is a long time
I plan to hopefully add some talent to my kit.

I have started to put some money aside with the intention of upgrading to a 40D by the end of 2008.
I don't really *need* anything but some nice to haves this year:
i) Bigger bag
ii) Monitor calibration thingi
iii) 70-200 F4L IS or 24-70L
We are going on a weeks photographic holiday to the lakes in August with Lakeland Photographic, so this has taken up most of our 'spare' cash for this year. So unless I come into some extra money then the list above will carry over into 2009! Doesn't bother me as I am reeeeeaaallly looking forward to the holiday!

Trying to work out to get the D300 of the 70-200 F2.8 VR
I was lucky enough to get the 70-200 a few months ago and it is the absolute love of my life (sorry, hubby, kids, grandkids, dogs ...) It's rejuvenated my enthusiasm for my ageing Fuji S3Pro.
Of course I'd like:
D3
New Speedlight
Very lightweight tripod
Set of filters
Fast macro lens
a bag that works for my kit (there MUST be one out there!)
and so the list goes on. Winning the Lottery would be good :D
But most of all, I want to set myself a year-long project - something out of my comfort zone to get my teeth into. And I'll probably live to regret having such a stupid idea :bang:
My 2008 plans include a new 'puter with tft monitor and a Huey thingy, camera wise a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR, a x2 converter, maybe a 150mm Sigma Macro and if that lottery win comes in, a 28-70 F2.8 and a D3
Maybe a Canon 100-400mm L.... No doubt I will end up buying a 40D.

I am kind of gutted that I bought the D200 only 3 or 4 months ago. However one thing which keeps getting my goat in the books I read, the full frame cameras seem to be able to capture "much more" of your scene, this seems especially apparent in Landscapes which I think are my favourite shot types.
Do you think a D3 would be overkill for a new comer? Obviously very hard to justify that cost for a toy, but will it be harder than the D200 for example to use?

Whether its worth it or not depends on how well off you are, and how often you'll use it but it won't be any harder to use as such... there's more options and more 'stuff' but it doesn't mean you need to know more about photography - in fact its highly capable in auto mode but if all you were going to do was point and shoot I'd imagine that's get some people here who can't afford them all riled up!
I'd love one though and constantly think about how nice it'd be to have a full frame sensor for things like portrait shots... I'd use cropped modes for macro and sports photography I expect.
Its a wonderful bit of kit and when I come to sell my home I will have some money that I 'could' buy one with... that thought is seductive.
I think D200 is overkill for a newcomer...
Its gonna last you a long long while, its a posh bit of kit to "learn" on, the biggest up-grades you can make with any body is glass.
I dunno about fullframe and landscapes, I dont think you can limit its advantages just to landscapes, seems like an odd way to look at it.
If its mostly about resolution, you can always do with more of it, whatever your shooting.
Thanks for the link. Had a quick look and you have been lucky to get that off Santa. Funny actually, because one of the bags I have been umming and arring about is the Tamrac Cyber pro.I got a bag from Santa this year, see threadhttp://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=42676

Hmm, having just bought Diego Garcia's Sigma 300 f/2.8 I guess that may leave the route open for a Canon 200 f/2. Or I may just be happy with the 300.
I've also been monitoring the price of used 1DS Mk IIs and I am wondering if I should swap one of the 1D Mk IIs I have for a 1DS?

I've got it all planned out.
10-20mm Sigma and Cokin filters (polarizer mainly) for my skiing holiday in march.
Then, 430ex for doing portraits for the time between march and July - I'll be using this at college.
Then, 70-200mm f/4 Canon L for the summer where I'll be shooting mountain biking mainly.
Then in october, ready for my holiday to new york, I'll be looking for a good walkabout lens.
Probably something like an 24-70mm ex Sigma, or the like.
And that will be me well and truly happy!
Until I'm lusting for a 40d, 5d or even a 1d
I'll be selling my fisheye, since I've pretty much discovered its fairly useless except on the odd occasion, which I'm fairly disappointed about.
Just added a sigma 170-500mm on the saturday before Xmas and my mail order wired remote arrived Monday so all i need is the pictures in 2008 to justify the outlay!
I don't have a 50mm, and am seriously considering the Canon 50mm 1.4 :D

Some 72mm filters (ND and circ pol), hopefully a 200-300 range IS (as in around that length at the long end, rather than some imaginary 200-300mm lens ;)), and possibly a better tripod.
Getting a 70-200 2.8 IS This weekend hopefully :)

580ex and an UWA of some sort. Then that's it, honest.
Over the past week just added a 70-200 F4 L to my kit, a Manfrotto 055XPROB and a 488RC2, next purchases planned are -
17-40 F4 L and a 24-70 F2.8 L
Once I have those, probably a speedlight, then I think that should be a suitable level of financial distress, may even consider a 5D MK2 when it comes out, but I think the wife may file for divorce... who knows..!

Sigma 30mm f/1.4. I ordered mine a week ago and have just heard it is out of stock. Not so bad though as I have just taken delivery of a 60mm Micro-Nikkor and it is plenty to play with for now.
My list includes but is in no way limited too:
in no particular order
Canon 1dMk2
Canon 40d
70-200 f/2.8 of some variety, as yet undecided
16-35 f/2.8
580EX 2
just need to come up with some sort of order of priority:(

Interesting Mike. What prompted that change then? I have to say that if it wasn't for the glass issue I'd be really tempted to move to a D300 right now. Why do Canon insist on holding back their top AF system for the 1 series only?
I'm working for a pro wedding photog this year & they have a lot (I mean a lot!) of Nikon gear that I'll be using/able to test. I don't really use the 1D capabilities all that much since things calming down on the moto-X/rugby front I think it'll work out the better choice for me to have made the change over. I never actually handled Nikon cameras before I got my Canon equipment but must admit that I really like the feel of the D300 (I was very surprised tbh, I thought I'd hate it!) The flash system had to be one of the biggest deciding factors though if I'm honest due to the flexibility/cost.
(I don't think it'll be at all long before Canon fire another shot across Nikons bows though.)
It did worry me a little to change over but it's revamped my enthusiasm for photography again & I'm enjoying the challenge of re-learning a camera system. Not really much between each system but this just came down to availability of gear at the time & the fact that I was so impressed with the D300 (Cheers Colin (Hacker) for your influence in dragging me kicking & screaming to the darkside  )
Well i have now added my grad kit and polarizer to the ranks. Thinking i might swap the 24-105 for the 24-70 but still not 100% on that yet. Also at focus will be looking out for prime lenses, 300mm in particular. Undecided on body front between 40d and 1kmk2n still, hopefully can have a play with the 40d at focus too.
Well added the 70-200 2.8 IS on Sunday thanks to Mike switching to the dark side ;) only a 300 or 400 2.8 to add now and maybe a 580 ex2 and ill be sorted i think ;)
I think it's about time I got a new tripod as my old Velbon is about 20 years old and doesn't lock tight anymore!
At some point this year I also intend getting one of Imaging Source's astronomy cameras... something like this one:

Only one think....
A fully upgraded and functional brain to retain all the information I gather .....
Hopefully the new model will not leak like a sieve as my present model does... I have even tried several firmware upgrades this year... however all i get for the next couple of hours is syntax errors rolling in front of my cranial optical data receivers and I have to down grade the firmware to 1.0 again.....
Still saving for the upgrade might not get the money together in time to meet the 2008 dead line..

My list is too long to fit on this screen.
1D Mk3
450D [for the missus]
17-55mm f/2.8 IS [for the missus]
70-300mm DO IS [for the missus]
35mm f/1.4 L
and either the 500mm f/4 IS L or the 600mm f/4 IS L
I need some staff :bang:
Nikon 24-70 2.8 is hot on my list
That'd give me, 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, 300 all of which are internal focus and 2.8 apertures.
I guess a new kit bag would be a good idea too. Time to start hunting down a victim :)
Canon 300mm f2.8 and a Lee filter holder:thumbs:
My shopping list has changed! Sold my 400D and now my 70-200, going to sell the 20-35 and get the 24-105 F4 L, also purchasing a 40D hopefully this week! Cant wait
I'm thinking about Nikon 85mm 1.8. I'd think about the 1.4 but then we're getting into the budget I want to set aside for the 17-55 2.8
Would love to get a D300 with grip, but as for funds... well that is a different matter! :/

Must get soon:
50mm f/1.4 - maybe 2
EF 85 f/1.8
EF 100 f/2.8 macro
LOTS of CF and SD cards 2-4Gb size.
Would love to get:
1D Mk IIn at nice price
EF 135 f/2
EF 500 f/4
EF 300 f/2.8
1.4x converter
POSSIBLY 1D Mk III - If it is ever completely debugged, possibly wait for the 1D Mk IIIN...

Definitely getting;
10-20 Sigma/Canon 10-22
Would really like to get (needs some saving yet);
either 70-200 2.8 IS USM L or 120-300 2.8 Sigma:D
I plan to add;
16gb Sandisk Extreme CF card for my 5D to replace the 4gb card
8gb Sandisk Extreme SDHC cards for both my 1dmkII bodies to replace the 2gb SD
2x Canon 580EXII to allow me to be more experimental with my lighting, have off the camera slaves controlled my on camera master.
Im hoping to add these just as soon as Mr Kerso delivers them to me. :D
Other than that, i still want a serious wideangle lens, im still undecided between the 16-35f2.8II and the 14f2.8II, i may end up buying both and selling the one i cannoy get on with.
Mines to get another to get:

Well I'm a noob so the list is quite long but I'll narrow it down to the things I've been looking at as top priority.
- A Tripod.
- Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D AF Lens
- A second memory card.
Been looking at getting a few filters aswell but they're not exactly essential at the moment and a PC also as my laptop just aint cut out for the software. Despite it only being 16 months old! Maybe a decent little printer aswell but again, not an essential at the moment although its getting close.
I'm new to the D-SLR with my D80. Initial purchases to be some filters, remote.
Lens wise, i'm after the 70-300vr and probably a Sigma 10-20mm. Wouldn't mind the Nikon 50mm 1.4:naughty:
Looks like an expensive time ahead

another 50mm 1.8 :( as I broke mine. Also a new tripod and something WIDE maybe a sigma 10-20 I may go fixed with my wide lens as I don't really see the point having a little bit of zoom on a wide lens just have to recompose abit more.
well a few weeks ago, i brought the 450D slr camera... with lens... so:

New kitchen vs. New camera gear
