Great set of photos Joe. Just a thought seeing the quality of your images do you fancy doing a tutorial on how you took the shots ie settings etc

Thanks.

The key thing is the panning technique. CT wrote a good guide and posted it here: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=8216 I have asked him to re-host the images as they seem to have gone.

With respect to settings etc, I use the following:

The lens used by me is the Sigma 120-300 2.8 which while expensive is a great lens for motorsport. It doesnt have any image stabilisation, but that doesnt matter too much for this kind of work. The zoom length works well at most tracks, and you can add TCs for more length.

I use a monopod for support, as the lens is very heavy. This can make panning actually more tricky, which is why I often use a pouch. This allows the monopod to rotate with your body rather than with the ground. With a smaller lighter lens, a monopod isnt really necessary.

When panning, to create a good background blur, the camera should be in shutter priority with the shutter speed somewhere between around 1/100th and 1/250th. When first practicing it might be worth using 1/320th as this will provide sharper subjects but less background blur. A slower shutter speed is necessary when you are moving the camera at a slower speed. In other words, you should match the panning speed with the shutter speed.

As you can see, for some shots I rotate the camera so that I get the effect of the car going uphill. This is a love/hate thing. I think it provides a bit more impact and drama, but it can get tiresome after a while!

Hope this helps. :)

Number 4 makes me laugh every time I look at it. How fast was that scooter going?

They look like a series to me when you look at the suspension and brakes on number 5.
