keep it or recycle it... ?

Have an old Hanimex TZ*2 flash, which I know
won't work on my shiny new 350d. But I'm wondering
if I can in some way use it off camera, without it being
connected, or should I just freecycle it ?

1st Stop - some local camera shop and see if they can suggest something more than the recycling option.

get a cheapo slave sensor for it?

A cheap slave is a great idea. I've 4 flashguns that I've acquired over the years, and only two will work on my 5D the others are used as slaves. You need to balance the exposure from multiple flash heads though. That's not to difficult by using the on camera screen and enlarge the area where the slave is operating.

I doubt if you'll get a great deal for the flash unit anyway. Keep it as a slave
