I think the lighting and the statue are great but the background lets the shot down, it doesn't seem to fit in.

Why do you think the BG doesn't fit? The statue is facing the town which with the period lamps is correct for the era.

The statue and the sky/lighting remind me of a soviet era propaganda poster, they tended to be very simplistic. In the image above the buildings are complicated and conflict with my idea of what the shot seemed to be.

okay thanks for explaining your opinion....the pic doesn't remind me of that era, for me it is contextual :).
