Looks a bargain to me, I believe Canon only every made the to order and the total was around a dozen or so. VERY rare for one to come to the market.

At the current exchange rate it's under £50K

 am I glad I'm not a pro if they are the prices they have to pay for lenses

I would want it made from some sort of precious meal and diamonds at that price!

IanC_UK
30-12-2007, 12:00
lol no not made of diamonds etc, but the glass is worth an absolute fortune you need to see how big this lens really is to get to grips with it lol

It's a sweet wee beastie isn't it.

That's probably it's most common haunt, by the sea as it's just the ticket for big surf contests. Sometimes used with a pair of stacked 2x's converters.

You are right. I stumbled across this monster somewhere on the web (can't recall where) when doing a bit of research before I bought the 100 - 400L. They are only made to order and the price I saw was £70000, so 50k is a nae bad price.

You can get a similarly sized Opteca (or some damn make I'd never heard of) 1200mm for about £150. I wonder how good that lens is ***:lol:

It was introduced in 1993 and discontinued in 2005, so it's a pretty rare beast. I believe it weighs 36lbs.

Perfect walkabout lens:thumbs:

The BBC have one attached to a film camera, they have used it for David Attenborough wild life shots in the Arctic, and I'm suer Sports Illustrated have a couple plus the guy who own Oakley sunglasses.

I did hear Canon stopped making them when they started their lead free policy, as there is so much lead in the glass of this monster.

FOUR stops penalty? On that animal, with its F/5.6 at the widest, that would mean F/22 . . . !

If you think you can shoot a fast moving surfer with that – 'stop' him with a fast enough shutter speed (the theory says shutter speed ought to be around 1/2,000th!) – and get a properly lit photo, I think you may be very disappointed with your shiny 99,000 bucks piece of hardware!

I guess if you're at the world surfing championships and you want a shot of some figure on a board a couple of miles out to sea, your choices are pretty limited.

The lens/camera will be really well supported. Chances are that it's as bright as bright can be and I reckon usable shutter speeds would be from 350 upwards.

I'd bag it. :)

That is a truely humoungus lens!! Indeed it does come with its own tripod as I doubt there are many tripods around that would take the weight. However I wouldnt want to carry the lens or tripod around as I bet they both weight a tonne.

I might buy one though, cheaper by far than a house at the moment!!

I'd rather have this one. It comes with it's own wheelbarrow.
