Okay, so its that time in your life where you've got your first car and you're miserably trawling from insurance company to insurance company looking for a sensible quote that the skint likes of a college student can afford.
For christmas I got a 1993 corsa :D :)
But I'm looking to insure it, and using confused.com, the cheapest quote I got was £3534, and with GoCompare.com I got £1640.
Where do you guys get your insurance from? How is it?

These knocked over £150 off my insurance. might be worth a try.

I usually trawl the comparison sites, then visit the site of the cheapest quote (but not via the link on the comparison site). Sometimes they will price match. If you are registered on Quidco, they often have some good cashback incentives.
Often it is more expensive to pay monthly as they stick interest on your payments. I'm with Barclays at the minute, and their pay monthly scheme costs no different to paying the full amount. Just make sure you get everything covered that you need. Generally, the larger the excess you are prepared to pay, the cheaper your insurance policy.
I am in the same boat, the cheapest I could find was £4325 for my 205.

liverpool victoria are sposed to be good for da younger driver.
confused.com are well worth a look too. my lad paid £1300 two years ago, at 18, for a £500 105 1.4 diesel we bought him.
i moaned at £180 fully comp for me and her to drive my s reg 1.6 escort.
What might be right for someone else might not be right for you. I know people who recommended Diamond but I had so many problems with them when a lorry drove into me. Insurance is a funny old game!
But if you're a student, have you tried Endsleigh - when I was at Uni, they used to specialise in Student insurance....

Confused.com isn't very good for younger drivers or specialist insurance, they qouted me 2k for my GT4 and I only usually pay around 400 lol
Try Adrian Flux, Quinn Direct that Del mentioned, Norwich Union can sometimes have good deals. Your'e also better ringing up rather than relying on online qoutes.

I pay £450 tpft on my 1.8 vectra as main driver 1 years ncb at 19.

people can say "try these" and "try those", but insurance is never the same for 2 people, so its just a case of trawling through them and hope your not a loser in the postcode lottery :) good luck (its all those chavvy boy racers you have to thank for your premiums being so high)
I uised to be with ecarinsurance when they were an offshore company, they were very cheap then but now they are owned by Norwich Union my last quote doubled. After much searching I went with the Post Office. Back then they had a £50 cashback offer, just now I think it's one month free which could be worth more to you.
Make sure you try elephant/admiral on your travels. :)

Thats not what I'm doing this for really :p
I know they're not going to be the same for me, but really what I'm doing is building up a big old list of insurance companies I need to get a quote from

Thats pretty cheap for a 16 year old! Maybe it will be cheaper when you are legally old enough to drive on the road :) :) :)

my advice is to try the comparison sites but to call up (not apply online) the insurer that works out the cheapest. You'd be surprised how much you can haggle off the price.

couldnt remember. quinn direct were the mob that got my lad the best quote. in ireland if i remember right. no probs when swapping cars either. or mods within reason. big stereo in his case.

now add up how much money you've paid to insurance companies over the years, and how much you've had back :)

Some of these figures are astounding
I used to begrudge paying 400 quid for my CTR's insurance and that was protected fully comp. Changing to an MR2 got a refund on some of the premium and moving down to an oil burning focii got it sub 250 :D
Ensleigh do a discount for students - might be worth a try

and cofused.com s bloody site just dide , after ten mins putting in details. aaaaaaaaaaaaargh.
I can't beleive how expensive insurance is for 17 yr olds now, it doesn't even seem relative to what I paid as a 17 year old (28 yrs ago). I can remember paying £350 TPFT for a 1.6 Mk3 Cortina that cost me £800.

And to think, they all sit round wondering why there are so many uninsured cars on the road driven by young people

The cheapest quote I got was £1465 from Challenge Churchill.
Its ridiculous, because my car is a Vauxhall Corsa - 1993, 5 doors, 1.2l engine.
I haven't bothered paying out for windscreen damage or anything like that, because by the time you add it all up, its equates to the price of the car. Which, by the way, was £500.

The first Car I had was an L-Reg Corsa 1.0!, that I paid £450 for, the insurance I got was from bell.com which were the cheapest at the time [they're part of admiral] and that was TPFT was £700...I was a learner, but I was 21. and a woman :) Which made it cheaper still [but not that much]
I now have a V-Reg Ford Focus 1.6 petrol, been passed 2 years also did my "pass plus" and I now pay £480 Fully Comp. Which I was quite happy with.

Currently looking to insure a Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 instead as can't afford the mini and the insurance so going for the £400 Corsa instead but all depends on passing test within then next few months.

try out moneysupermarket.com (think it searches different insurers than confused) and give tesco a try too, they have a tesco value insurance believe it or not.
I am afraid that in my experience it is best to ring companies rather than use these comparison sites. Use the CS to quickly eliminate the one that clearly dont want you.
Some of the specailist car magazines may also give you some brokers specialising with qoutes for young drivers. But at the end of the day you don,t want to pay as much as your car is worth for insurance. Good Luck hope you find something reasonable.
Im an old git and only pay £300 year for two cars fully comp protected NCD.
My car - well tatty heap on four wheels, is insured with Direct Line. My motorbikes with Carol Nash ( they do cars as well)

As DF said is it any wonder that there are so many uninsured cars on the road. I used to use Tesco and the wife has always used the AA. The only reason that I do not use them now is that I have a company car so I don't have to pay the insurance :) only trouble with that is it screws up your tax code :(

insurance is a real pain, my wife passed her test just over 12 months ago (she's in her early 30's) bought an old fiesta for £750 and it cost her £600 to insure it, day before new years eve she was involed in a crash thats written it off, so were just looking into getting her a new car of a similar ilk, just finished shopping around for insurance on a 'T' reg daiwoo (or how ever it's spelt) Matiz 749cc and the cheapest we can find is almost £900 because of her recent accident !

I found the cheapest was Elephant when I insured my first car. It was a BMW 320i, 10 years old. I was over 30 and my first year was around £1200. Came dowen to £800 the year after and is now about £320 after 5 years no claims
Try Swift Cover (http://www.swiftcover.com). They were hundreds cheaper than anything else for both me and my girlfriend on our separate policies.

so, to summarize all the posts, you need to phone every car insurance co there is, visit every comparison site there is and every car insurance website there is. :) :) :)
glad you asked? :) :)

No easy route on this one I am afraid.
Your going to have to do the several hours of work on the phones and internet.
I have heard, just like any other sales company, they have targets to meet and have so many policies a month from each provider that they have to fulfill.

I urge though, the cheapest isn't always the best!!
(And the best isn't always any good!)
I've had too many problems since my accident (in August). I was not at fault and the idiot that crashed into me accepted 100% blame.
So I still can't understand why, after 5 months, all I've got is a £250 cheque.
They've managed to lose all my details, lose the details of the other insurance company, move my car to a scrap yard without my permission, pass my private medical details on to a doctor that isn't dealing with my case .... I could go on!!
Oh, and when a friend's car was on fire, they tried to argue their way out of a payout saying that Third Party Fire and Theft, didn't cover fire!!
Some companies are cheap because they get you legal to be on the road. In the unfortunate event that they actually have to do their jobs, some are completely and utterly clueless!
Best of luck with your search though... Once my mess of a claim is over and they decide which one of 2 firms of solicitors that they've stupidly contracted, will be dealing with my claim, I'll be moving back to Diamond.
