View Full Version : Viewing Member Galleries by Camera / Lens details

One search criteria I found on another *cough* forum , was the ability to view members photo's by the camera / lens they had been shot with. Now we have a lot of invaluable photos already on the forum galleries, so the question is can we offer the same facility here ?

Perfect solution would be to pick up from EXIF data (if available), but if not I suppose the option for people to enter lens used in certain field.

It would definitely make life easier for members to help decide on next toy.....sorry camera / lens ;), plus offer another reason for new members to join :whistle2:

the software we currently run doenst have exif reading capabilities, so it would rely on members adding the info as a comment, though we will be upgrading at some point to the latest version, which does have exif reading but i dont know if that will help!

Providing the Exif details are still in the pictures (I know mine are removed by using Save for web in PS) then the upgrades that are planned will allow for those searches to be done.

Excellent. I really think it would be of great use to users of site. You can read all the reviews you want, but at the end of the day seeing real results helps greatly. In addition one becomes familiar with the photgraphic skills of individuals on this forum, so you can judge the PQ accordingly.

What dates are you looking at for upgrade ? May be worth advising people that if they want this search facility, then exif data is required. I'll have no problem including for future shots.

We will be upgrading soon, but i cant give you a definate date on the gallery update as its seperate from the main forums, ideally we would have liked a fully integrated gallery solution!

There is a series of updates and changes in the pipeline, the whole team are working to get these done currently but we have no information currently available as to the time scale.

There will be announcements on the forums before we start as we will have to close the whole site temporarily while the upgrades are performed.

You've been overdosing on "Saturday Night Fever" on the box the other night ;)

Marcel

Well I've got a bit of Saturday Night Fever, unfortunately it's also done me for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, 4 times on the trot now :(

Off to the docs this afternoon :)

Was this included in the recent upgrade guys ?

Matty, what is it you use - is it Photopost gallery? There is a way to integrate that into vbb as I understand :)

matty

we dont use photopost, we are using Gallery from menalto at the moment, i never liked photopost! We will most likely go to Gallery2, though im not averse to looking at other solutions

just one thing you may not be aware of with the gallery.... I use Norton Internet Security, and I have to disable it before I can upload or edit photos.

I don't know if there is a way around it but it isn't ideal (for me at least)

Why not just ask people to start listing their kit as part of their signature?
Not so much as 'look at all my toys' but to give an idea of what equipment people use to produce the goods.

I can understand that those with poorer-quality cameras may feel intimidated by this, but they can always sell their Canons and buy real cameras eventually.

The only way round NIS is to dump it. :hissyfit: It is bloatware and I hate it. It creates havock for users of forums and things all over the place - not just here :) Use a different firewall like Sygate or Zone Alarm, much much better.:smilenod:

Interesting - what about photopost don't you like - I heard the new version is MUCH better than it used to be. We're thinking of using it on another site I admin, but would be interested in your experience of it. :)

Marcel

Or Kerio. I used to use ZoneAlarm Pro, but it became a problem with some software I was using, and one had to go. The other software was a P2P client, so ZoneAlarm lost the fight....lol

I then tried Sygate (Free edition), and while it was nice, it wasn't just right.
I now use Kerio, which is absolutely spot on, it does exactly what it says on the tin, has the right amount of configuration options (Should I want to delve into non-Auto mode), and is perfect for me.

Besides, it's free, which is the best price there is.

I ditched my last Norton branded product in 2000 I think when they went really downhill.

Arkady

I use Kerio and AVG - both Czech products if I recall correctly.

i just dont like the way it looks and integrates, if i can get it to look the way our gallery looks now then i would look at it and take it to the team for discussion

matty

just asked a current user of PP, he says when it works its ok, but when it doesnt it takes the user database down with it, so i think that and the $199 cost will rule it out, lol

I personally don't like the way they do buisness and also the way they forced the designer of VBA into court and muscled their way in on his competeing product, after doing that they are now selling his product as their own. That alone is enough to make me not want to support their product.

Plus Gallery2 is totally free ;)

Not so much as 'look at all my toys' but to give an idea of what equipment people use to produce the goods.

While you can have whatever you want in your signature (as long as it is within the rules) I personally thing it gets a little stupid having a large list of equipment there after each post when the actual content of the post may only be one or two lines. It makes using the forums less enjoyable as you have to scroll down lost of posts to read very little content.

I can understand that those with poorer-quality cameras may feel intimidated by this, but they can always sell their Canons and buy real cameras eventually.

This is just my point of view but I have had quite enough of the Canon/Nikon jibes on the forum now, I know you are only saying it in jest but it may be taken another way by some of the newer members or people who don't know your posting style. In the long run this is exactly how the agro that is very apparent on some other forums began and it is not something that I wish to see here.

Steve/Matty - here's a handy hack :)

http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=80478

I'll take a look at G2 given your info, thanks

Steve
30-12-2005, 19:18
Thanks, that may come in handy.

I will have to have a proper look through the code as there seems to be a few issues with integrating it into VB3.5.2 comparred to 3.0.7 that it was written for. I see it has been done but with some issues still remaining.

Well...it's your forum at the end of the day.
But it is just a joke and if you can't see it...

Steve

Just to put you straight on a few things.

Well...it's your forum at the end of the day.
It is not my forum. Have a look around and use the search function, I am sure you will be able to find the correct answer.

But it is just a joke and if you can't see it...
Which part of my last post to you are you not capable of understanding, maybe it is the bit that I have now made bold?
I have had quite enough of the Canon/Nikon jibes on the forum now, I know you are only saying it in jest....
And just to clarify a little, I can see a joke, however having it repeatedly rammed down my throat in every thread that you chose to post it in is frankly really ****ing me off now. Not only is becoming very boring but it is also taking many threads off topic. No matter what you may think, at some point your little joke will upset someone enough to make them think I am not going to the photography forums again, every time I post there it gets taken off topic and turned into a Nikon/Canon debate by some bloke who thinks it’s funny. Tell me what right you think you have to potentially make someone else stay away due to your joke?

You ask for honest, direct replies as that is your way and what you are used to with being in the forces, but when someone else gives you one in another thread you take a dirty, below the belt sideswipe and insult the guy for politely posting his point of view. If you wish to reply civilly then I look forward to reading your post but don’t make the mistake of personally attacking me.

These are only my opinions as a member here and I have every right to post them in that capacity. Don't make the mistake of thinking when I post my personal views on the open forums that they are those of all the team. In this capacity everything I have written here will be looked at by the rest of the team and if they deem my comments to be worthy of attention I am sure I will be the first to know. As members we are all equal, me and YOU included. Try having some concideration for the other users of this forum.

matty

...I think this is getting a tad out of hand....there's a lot people who played the Nikon vs Canon gag...myself included. If it's gone too far, then I'll calm it down also. Think this is an example of where non face to face discussions start to get personal. If we all lived local & went to the pub, we would all get drunk, forget about it & then fill Arkadys jumper full of leaves & roll him down a hill ;)

I won't say anymore on the subject & I'll give the next Canon guy/gal I meet a big hug :)

ROTFFL - note the extra 'F'

But Steve...
to be told to get off my High Horse by someone when all I was doing was offering an explanation is a bit off, I think. Hence the pithy riposte. I don't see anyone ripping into him over this.

You are one of the founders of this site and you were the one who invited me here last year, as I recall. As such you have, in my mind at least, a notional 'ownership' of the site that non-founders like myself do not have.
I still regard myself as a guest, albeit an informed one.

The Nikon/Canon joke is one that's not going to go away - it's been running for years. Maybe you are bored by it now. Doesn't make it any less funny to some of the rest of us. If we are all equal on this site as you say, then let us have our fun please. That's why I'm here at least. Fun.

You'll notice that I only poke fun at long-established users - old gits like myself. We're legitimate targets for banter like mine, as I am to them.
New owners/members need all the encouragement they can get and I try to do just that.
A sense of friendly rivalry is a good thing - it inspires us to excel. At the end of the day, it's the images that will decide, not the cameras.

If eveyone votes to shut us up, then fine. Majority rule and all that.

I still think you could make more money with your landscapes though.

Marcel

The Canon / Nikon jocular attitude is OK to stay in moderation, it's something that we will always have, but maybe it's best if it's just toned down a little. :)

I think the best stance here is, if anyone has a problem with any posts, then hit the RTM button which looks like this http://www.thephotographyforums.com/forums/images/buttons/report.gif, under the posters name. Jot a note down about what you are complaining about and we'll deal with it from there. Please note that this includes complaints about any of us (The site staff), the report is sent to ALL staff members at once, and we don't like anyone being an arse on the forums, whether staff, member, dog, kiten or green snotty alien.
Until we get RTM's and complaints from members, then we are looking for a problem where there isn't one.

If anyone has a problem with a moderating decision, then please use the Contact Us (http://www.thephotographyforums.com/forums/sendmessage.php) button at the bottom of every page.
This also goes to every single member of staff, so we will deal with it accordingly.

For the sake of niceties and before someone says something they regret, I think it's better closed. Anyone got a problem, meet me round the back of the bike sheds in 5 minutes, and bring your older brother. (Or PM me with a girly excuse :D)

As they would say in'th army..."As you were lads (and ladies)".
