After a nearly pulling all my hair out, hopefully, (at the time of writing) this works.
This is pic from my previous camera, a 30D, taken in green box mode, but I did like the contrast between the iridescence of the plumage and the red Scottish sandstone cliff.

A big thanks to Robert P for his help, I was close to giving up:thankyou::thankyou::thankyou:
Glad it worked for you :)
Looks like the camera has chosen the AF point and liked the jagged rock more than the birds eye. Hope you are out of the green box most of the time now and using just the middle AF point so you choose what is in focus. Nice rocks though :)

Never really had the time to concentrate on photography, excuses I know, got all this new gear, 40D, 24-105L, 70-300 IS, 1.4 nifty, and a supporting cast of 430 EX, Velbon Ultra lux tripod, Lowepro, etc, etc, and wanting to improve. So now that I know how to post I will have to get out there and see what I can do.
