Hi,

I'm looking to get a remote shutter release for my Canon 400D. The main aim is to reduce camera shake whilst using my camera with a tripod for landscape and nature shots.

I am a little confused as to whether I need the cable or infra-red remote release? Researching on these forums I am right in thinking that you have to be in front of the camera to use the infra-red? Would a cable shutter release be better for my intended use?

As far as I can tell there is one Canon cable release compatible with the 400D. Are there any other brands / makes I can consider?

Any other advice gratefully recieved...

Thanks in advance,

Mark F

Mark

I used a wire shutter release on Saturday on my Dads 400d, I was really impressed with the extra bit of freedom it gave me for tripod shots, strongly recommend at least that one, I have not used an infra-red one sorry...cant comment but would imagine even greate freedom?

While anyone is answering Marks question, perhaps they can point me in the direction for a good one for my 1DsMk11n?

Thanks

Richard

The IR on the 400d is on the front of the camera so you'll need to be in front, which depending on the shot you're after could be awkward.

I have the canon cable release, which works well enough for me.

You do need to be in front to use the IR.

As far as the cable release have a look on ebay, plenty compatibles which work perfectly well for a lot less that the Canon version :) Think the one I got was an Addidt (?) for the 20D

I have the Canon RS60E3 for my 350d, the cable's about 2ft long. Press the button half in for focus and then down to take shot, It can be locked down aswell. Pretty handy, only tenner :)

Thanks for all the quick responses.

Looks like the cable release is the one for me...

@WanderingMind - where did you get the RS60E3 for a tenner? Best find so far for me is at Bristol Camera / OneStopDigital for £15...

Everywhere seems to be out of stock (for official ones). Bristol Cameras were out of stock a couple of weeks ago and had no idea when their supplier would be able to get more.

I didn't get on with the IR remote, so bought a cheapy ADIDT one off Ebay after recommendations from someone on here. Can't remember exactly who I got it from off Ebay - but it came from Germany. Seems there's a UK seller with the same one (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ADIDT-M1C1-remote-switch-canon-film-digi-SLRs_W0QQitemZ300187145815QQihZ020QQcategoryZ64345 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).

Strictly speaking you don't really need to be fully in front with the IR one. I use one for some shots, and tend to hold it above and slightly in front (Whilst I'm still behind the camera)

I've got the cable one, and find it very useful, but I'll be getting the wireless one shortly. I keep finding the cable isn't quite long enough as well.

I picked up a genuine RS60E3 from ebay for a tenner delivered. Was from HK and over xmas so took a couple of weeks to arrive but can't complain for that price!
