Forum info / Who are the staff on TP?

Some of you have expressed interest in the past about who actually owns TP, and who are the staff on the forums.

Here's a little bit of info that hopefully answers those questions :

Who owns Talk Photography?
Talk Photography is owned by three people.
Myself (Marcel), Matty, and digitalfailure.
We're collectively known as "Admin". We are all equal in the venture, and all have equal say, and equal ownership.
We all have our roles within the team. I do alot of the server work and have been running the POTY comp, along with any PR and press enquiries. Matty deals with external suppliers and sales, and digitalfailure makes the tea. (Just kidding, his role is more theoretical, with policy decisions) and slapping the web monkey when the server falls over.


Staff? Who are they?
Aswell as admins, we are ably assisted by a superb team of Moderators. Collectively we all make up the "Site Staff". (We can all be spotted with our usertitles in Red, most saying "Site Staff").

Our current roll call of Moderators are :

InaGlo
dod
RobertP
moomike
IanC_UK
Matt
Jimmy_Lemon
Joe T

They have moderator priveleges on the forum, which includes editing threads and posts. Moving threads and posts. Banning / suspending naughty members.
They are equal in input alongside the admins when making decisions to create forum policies and rules. Pretty much all major decisions with the forum involve consultation with the Moderators.
Therefore they are an integral and extremely important part of the forum.

We are also assisted by badgerbaiter who has extra priveleges in the motorsports forum (the ability to lock, edit & move threads etc)


How are moderators chosen?

Moderators are handpicked from the members when the need for more staff arises. Current staff put forward names of members who they think are level headed, conscientious, have common sense by the bucket load, and can offer tact, diplomacy, honesty and are trustworthy. Once a shortlist is agreed, the member is approached by admin and asked to become a member of the team.


Can I be a moderator?

Moderator positions are by invite only.


Do the staff get paid? Why do it then?

Not a penny. We are ALL here for the enjoyment of the forums, and our moderators see the privelege of helping run the forum as a way of giving back to the community that they enjoy being a part of.


If I have a problem, how do I contact the staff?

It depends on the nature of the problem. If you need to bring a thread or post to the attention of the staff, please use the RTM button. (It looks like this http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/images/custom_blue/buttons/report.gif)

A report is sent to ALL staff by email, and a discussion is automatically started in a private staff forum.

If your query or problem is of a more general nature, then please use the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of every page on the forum.

We often get PM's privately from members, raising concerns.
This is OK, but its easier and quicker to use the forum functions available (RTM and Contact Us), as thats all the member of staff will do...pass the message onto the rest of the staff for discussion.

If you have a genuine complaint, then please feel free to contact the Administrators / Moderators via the 'Contact Us' button, instead of PM'ing individual staff.

:thumbs: All sounds fair and dandy, but can I ask one thing that I have wondered about for a while, how does Rob Galbraith fit into the equation? Most of the information on new cameras and stuff links to his site [and excellent it is too I may add], so am I missing the stark staring obvious? :shrug:

Rob Galbraith has nothing to do with the forum, its just a link that pulls news from a group of sites

We have a seperate set of forums that only staff can see where we discuss matters arising, or beat the daylights out of each other, depending on opinions ;)

I had only met Matt before i became a staff member, have met everybody but Glo and Dod, and the ever elusive Matty now, but he lives in France (sorry Kent) and is not allowed into the UK with his current passport ;)

I have learnt a great deal from this forum throughout the time I have been a member. I also used to browse and pick up tips before I joined. I have often wondered who was responsible and what roles you all had. Thanks for the explanation and the work that you all put in. Long may it continue

CT hates me for subjecting him to a lifetime of hard graft for no material reward, Pxl8 thinks I'd get a part in a Dads Army remake and mmcp42 thinks I'm wandering the forums calling everybody luvvy and darh'ling covered in grease paint make up and flamboyant costumes......actually thats not a bad thought

Just a few comments from a newbie.

I only lurked this forum for a day or two before joining, which is the quickest I have ever made my mind up about joining any forum.

I think there is a noticeable absence of cliques, which is the downfall of a lot of forums.

People like myself, who are fairly new to photography or just wishing to learn how to take better photo's need honest but encouraging guidance - TP provides this in abundance.

Guys, can i just say a big thank you to all the staff here. They have helped me in so many ways, resizing my images for the forum use and other stuff, basically this is the only forum i use now and i am glad to that because i have never filled as welcomed on any other forum as i did when i come to this one. Truly a great forum with great people inside.

Since i have been a member of this forum i have.....

Learnt different ways to take photographs
Learnt some skills in Photoshop and wanted to buy photoshop in the first place

Got to meet some smashing people that will try to help you.

I knew DF a long time ago through car forums, and Bod through photo and other forums, and the mystery man of old through photo forums. we had all discussed setting up a new forum at different times with each other and eventually we all talked about it together, which was how we got it off the ground.,

when we originally set up, it was because we wanted a forum different from the rest, set up for members, with members interests rather than a one man ego trip or anything like that. For a long time we had it.

Then we had a little disagreement with the mystery man, the forums got closed and after a bit of messing about, we started up again without him as TalkPhotography(within days of closing), we like to think we are the original TPF, we have the original ideals, members and direction. We started up again as soon as we could after the shutdown of tpf. The other guy started again a while after we did with a new name and went in a different direction.

Costs are high. DF's biscuits cost the earth. server costs come in second, the more people, the higher the costs, but thats fine, thats what we want.

As for the mods, they were all members here anyway, non have been headhunted from anywhere else! Matt, CT and Ian have been with us from the beginning i think, Glo, RobertP, Dod and Mike were added to the team when it became clear that the admin team where working to much.:D

i did leave off badger baiter, and dod and robert! badger baiter is the motorsport mod, as we absorbed his motorsport forum.

we were running for over a year before the split, and we have been as we are now for over 2 years.(i think)

Just a little remind too, if anyone has a problem with a thread, can they please use the RTM button instead of PMing staff individually.
