some of my colours are going a little funny with 'save for web' so apologies for that.
The third hits the spot for me. I love it.
It IS a shame about the head on the first one although I still think it works, just not as well as it could :(
The third one is also very good and has a very modern feel to the angle and style of photography. It is very refreshing. :)
Wow! The width of that lens makes for some really good effects on those shots! What's the EXIF for them?
shame i chopped his head off a bit on this one :(
I don't think it matters a bit, the focus of the picture is his eyes with the concentration on what he's doing. It's my favourite of the set by a mile :)
Two has a great magazine feel to it.
Third unfortunately I don't like, it might be the angle of the trees or just the impact those wide angles have on me. I'm not saying it's bad (edit: as others obviously do like it), I just can't get into the effect at all :)
shame i chopped his head off a bit on this oneAt least he HAS a head, unlike the guy in pic 3!
That lens really works on the action shots....glad I bought one now :)
i think the first 2 are outstanding, a pity about the crop, but not a disaster at all! How much was the lens?

I wonder why the head crop in shot one is considered a problem? Is this based on convention or something? I find it lends the shot more ... well hard to put a semantic finger on so to speak but it seems to link me as the image viewer more with the subject, the energy seems to bleed in to the frame edge and beyond - or something like that. The second shot may well be more technically accomplished if the first is to be viewed as technically flawed, but to me that second shot is more constrained/contained. All great stuff regardless, but I'm simply curious regarding the reaction to the inadvertent crop :)
I think the "problem" is that in this case as you say the crop is "inadvertent" and thats the feeling most seem to get when looking at the photo. Sometimes we chose to frame or crop like that but usually it feels intentional.
Just my 2p's worth ;)

Ah ok :) I do feel the first one appears a lot less contrived by virtue of the lack of intention in the crop though ;) So does the third shot suffer also from inadvertent positioning? I only ask as it's clearly a post-capture crop. My curiosity is with regards more to aesthetic standpoints more than anything else. As already stated, I think they're all great shots :) I'm very interested to know more about this lens also as, since switching to a DSLR (with 1.5 x focal length multiplication factor to consider) I've been left somewhat out in the cold vis a vis wide angle work.

thanks for all the feedback :)
im pleased with the lens and its nice to ave a wide angle back, i forgot how much i missed it. all shots were taken at 10mm except the sunset which was at 20mm taken on the way home. as for the rest of the exif, i havent got acess to it as im at my parents house for christmas and dont have my computer with me.
i actually really like the first shot too and as an image im not that worried about the head. unfortunately its the first thing many people notice, myself included, and i felt it gave the image an 'almost but not quite' feel which i think is kinda what steve is saying as it was unintentional. but like dod said the focus is on the eyes and im pleased with that.
i cropped 3 as it just seemed to have far to much dead space around it which was contributing nothing. and like you say about number 2 camsterfactor it doesnt really have such a fast/dynamic feel to it, but i am pleased with the composition.
thanks all :D
Nice shots there, I like the first and second ones best the distorion really adds to the feel of the shot for me :)
Spot-on! The first one's far and away the best.
Don't worry about cropping the helmet - it still looks fine to me and I used to do that sort of thing for a living.
Get 'em in to MBUK down in Bath and if Steve Behr and Seb Rodgers moan, tell them I sent you.
Numbers 1 and 2 are real cracking shots you shold be very pleased with them
