View Full Version : Where Now??
hi guys
just wondered if anyone can direct me as to where to go now with this picture. I look at it and think, Hmmm it lacks something, i have dodged and burned a few area's because of the removal of a big 'For Sale' sign, but not sure what to do next, could i have what you think its lacking, or not.. depending on your view.

i have not altered it to sepia, i have just done a straight desaturation on it. It came about because of my numbskull approach to photographing it with the wrong white balance setting  , i know, i should have used Raw, and maybe i will from now on, would like to see a thread regarding this subject.
Anyway thanks in advance,
Stevannie:shock:
The great thing about lanscape photography (and buildings are part of the landscape) is that if you don't get the result you hoped for, you can always go back and do it again.
Instead of struggling with an image that wasn't right to start with, go back and re-shoot, taking note of your earlier mistakes.
I'm still struggling with scenes I started photographing as a teenager - the standing stones on Dartmoor is a location I revisit time and again as the light is never the same twice.
Don't think that you have to get it right first time - it's better by far to make a mistake, learn from it and correct you technique accordingly - that way, you know how you achieved an image and can reproduce that effect in other images.
Shoot manual and RAW and take your time. It's only photography - we've been at it over 100 years and it's still not a perfect science.
As per Rob, you can't beat getting the perfect light, composition etc on the original shot. So if you live nearby make a note of what time of day light falls best on the building & shoot again. No amount of PS work will make up for it.
Saying that I have had a play on a few basics just to show a few pointers on what could be achieved.
Order of play was :-
- Desaturate to get B&W.....this made a huge improvemnt IMHO
- Tweaked levels slightly to try & get back some contrast (moved centre pointer to right)
- Sky is bleached out in shot, so added new one (see Tutorial on Alpha Masking)
- Drive was bleached out, so cloned gravel from side.

You could go on, but just wanted to show if you catch the right light on shoot, you want a great sky in background plus ensure no areas are completely bleached. Shooting RAW will help the latter.
Have fun :)
Good job Dave. :)
The original sepia is way too red looking, so if you wanted to stick with the sepia here's another option. Adding a frame can also make a pic look much more finished.

wow guys, i love em both, i really have to get to grips with PS, and like Arkady said, i can go back and re-shoot the subject. I am going to shoot a lot more RAW in future, as i always cock-up somewhere along the lines. I think the sepia one wins it for me, although putting a new sky in was a great move.
thanks guys

I think it lacks a bit of life, i.e. an animal or some people?

We'll leave you to clone those in ;)
No pleasing some people. :D

As Arkady has already said, the wife and i will be going back to re-photograph the Mill.

Somewhere north of London...
May be Wolverhampton, Sheffield or even further, depending on uptake and my finances (and if someone wants to put me up on the sofa...).
