Following on from my first self portrait shot with the new lens (see HERE (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=44526),) this morning I was able to catch a few shots of a friend who was playing the xbox.

I quite like the shot, the morning sun glaring through the kitchen window was a must.

Comments :)?

I've just spent another 10 minutes touching it up..

For the better/worse?!

Nice composition and natural look, your image is front focused as the shoulder is the in focus part and not the eyes. I really like the back lit effect though ;)

I really like this, reminds me of a print you would get from a medium format camera, smashing work.

Nice shot, do like the back light, maybe a little soft?

A number of people have commented on the focus now, which puzzles me. I made sure each of the shots I took were focused on his face, with the light just in the right place and moving so the subject is slightly off centered.

Should I be using the Manual Focus here to stop AF kicking in?

Its not out of focus, it's an effect from natural sunlight beaming directly at your subject, especially when its quite strong. Nice depth of field by the way.

I think the focus point is wrong too. The logo on the T shirt is sharp, but his eyes are not. Otherwise a nice photo.

Sorry but I disagree. The autofocus is focused in on the T-Shirt and not the face - the face is far too soft, whilst the T-Shirt logo is incredibly sharp.

Nice composition though

unfortunately I have to agree, because you've used such a shallow DOF when your focus is off slightly it is obvious - The T'shirt is pi sharp with his face being soft.

It's not the end of the world - and it is still a very nice shot, lovely compostion and the PP work is also good.

Very nice shot indeed, it's a shame you've front focused a little but it's still a nice study. I particularly like the rim lighting from that... table lamp? Pity the actual lamp is just visible in front of his face, but that can easily be sorted by moving your subject slightly.. or the lamp.

 lamp? there is no lamp?

Do you mean the white area lower down in the shot? That's the chair he's sat in - a biiig white infateable thing.

Thanks for the positives!

Here's another shot of the same guy. Correct focus this time, right :)?

gah! I have an a100, can anyone suggest their preferable 'focus mode'? I will have to have a play tomorrow sometime. Infact, I've just had a quick look, on Aperture mode the sharpness is set to '0', I have just upped it a couple of notches. I'll give it a test tomorrow and report back! :)

LOL. No- the rim lighting around his head and hair from backlight.

:bang: ahaha... my bad.

that's actually natural lighting coming through the kitchen window.

Now if you'd have read my first post, you'd understand:
