View Full Version : Can we have a dedicated Meet Photos Section?

Dear Mods,

I know i'm new here but i have made a small observation, and just wondered what others thought?

I think it is all well and good to have the meet-ups amongst members, and i hope to be able to get along to one when there's one in my area, but could we have a seperate area for the meet's photos.

I know that the critique/photo sharing has been broken down into their sub-sections ie Macro, Landscape etc but when there is a meet-up to somewhere there is a particular type of photography ie Animals and Nature, the section becomes swamped by posts of members pics from the meet, this causes other people's threads to be bumped down the pages and ultimately never seen.

Would it be wise and fairer if they were all in one place so that if people wanted to view the shots from the meet they could go into the particular section and not fill the sections for normal pictures?

Just an idea so don't shoot me.

Personally I think this is a cracking idea

Thats probabley a good idea
There were about 15 members plus " guests" at the venue and after a quick chat with Ian it was decided to keep the animals in their own threads rather than everyone post their shots willy nilly, to try and keep some semblance of order to the whole thing.

Now, I for one ( the organiser) never expected it to be that sucessful, well done TP members, for your support

I guess I should add a little apology to this, for those members who feel that "we" have taken over TP animal & nature section. I am sure it will be short lived and "normal service" will be resumed ASAP "

Agreed. It was a huge meet, they don't normally take over a section the way the Whipsnade pics have done over the last few days, so apologies to everyone for that, it probably does look quite odd to newer members. ;)

It would be nice to be able to find all the Meet photo's in one place.:)

A section for meet photo's would work, but an alternative would be to keep all meet photos in thread, in the relevant section, which everyone adds onto.

I think TP has done it before and it seemed to work quite successfully. I think it was done for CJ's using light training last year.

Just an alternative view :)

I can see where you're coming from Taxi but I think its easier for the poster of the photo's to find their individual comments and crits if they have their own thread?

Hmmm I'm not sure about this one.

I've organised quite a few meets in the past and we've always come back and gotten comments on the floods of pictures taking over.

I guess the main bulk of the issue is who are the photos being posted up for? If its for the benefit of the other people on the meet then posting them in a seperate section or in the meets forum sorts that but then you're unlikely to get the exposure (haha see what I did there?!) to the rest of the forum that might just pass that section without giving it a look in.

Posting things into animals, or buildings or whatever means that people who will usually look at these sections will look at them - but I can also see the flipside of this in that normal posts get pushed off the page never to be seen again.

What I started doing on the later meets was to download my pics, go through them, pp a few and wait a few days and stick them up one or two at a time over a longer period - just meant people got bored with them less quickly ;)

I know the last time we went to Chester as a fairly large group, Ian set up a thread which we all just posted into for the benefit of each other and then posted the images again later for crit and comments in the relevant section.

Personally I'm not too keen on the idea. I can understand the reasoning behind it, but I don't think it's fair to pigeon hole someones shots just because they were taken on a meet.

Meet photos of each other, then I think they should be in a thread on their own in the meets forum maybe.
But the shots taken on the day I think should go in the respective subforum for sharing, after all, that's what it's there for, and it also gives exposure to those members that *didn't* go on the meet (and might not necessarily be a regular reader of the meets forum).

I think the best thing to do after a meet, is to put each of your own pics in your own thread, (rather than one thread per pic etc)...so all your shots of people in the street from the day, go into one thread in People and Portraits etc....

Unless you want to stagger it like MC says above, then put them in separate threads...That gives more of a balance between 'taking over' the forum.

The thread listings are 40 threads per page, and I can't see many meets filling that with 40 members threads on one page ;)

Better just to title meet threads in a uniform fashion, i.e. "Meet - Timbuktu - personalised description" That way they are easy to find and group together using the search function for those that want to.

Ok fair enough, how about a "Post your XXX meet photos here" thread, and if there is a common theme to the photos e.g. animals, architecture, people etc. then people who went on the meet can post their pics in there?

Just re-read the above post and looks a bit dodgy, sounds like the meet was in Amsterdam http://www.airgunbbs.com/forums/images/smilies/redface.gif

But thats exactly what we did
whipsnade lions
whipsnade wolves etc etc and everyone posted their wolves lions etc in each thread.
We seem to have come full circle?

I think the way the pictures were posted was ok. Like Cobra says, each different picture was preceeded with the title, 'Whipsnade'. Was quite easy to skip them if you didn't want to look, and carry on to the next thread.

Your absolutely right imo, I might be wrong but I can't find a York set in any other sub-forum than general, though there is a whipsnade glider in Transport
That is the pic post bottle neck, general is just too....general.
If all subs were likely to carry equal exposure, peeps would be more likely to post in the correct sub.
Everyone would like to get the max exposure for their photos, but in doing so, someone has to lose out, that might not be a consideration everyone contemplates before a post.

Sorry Cobra, i gave up looking at the Whipsnade threads, as for me they were just there for show and were not there asking for C+C which i thought the sections were for?

The sections are for sharing as well as general thoughts and discussion, if anyone wanted more indepth then they are very welcome to put a shot in the Indepth Critique. It may well be that some posts from a meet fit in all areas, and so why not put them in all areas.

I agree that shots of the folks should probably go in the meet thread, but other pics should be where appropriate. Otherwise we could get into " lets have one thread for the london marathon or something that many folks will go to"

If its in the title, and your bored of the same place, you don't need to click :)

Sorry Cobra, i gave up looking at the Whipsnade threads,

And that of course is your or anyones elses prerogative
They were all "labled" so could be skipped if of no interest

as for me they were just there for show and were not there asking for C+C which i thought the sections were for?

As I understand it all the photo's posted here / there are " fair game" and are there for C&C
or am I wrong and C&C is "by appointment" only? I hope not!
I post C&C on images that catch my eye or perhaps something I can help someone with. I don't read every section everyday some subjects don't interest me, and if labled accurately can be skipped or read and C&C'd as appropriate.
Which is exactly what has happened in your ( this) case
