View Full Version : Exhibition naming...
I've got an exhibition in Feb and time is getting on. I'm trying to name it. The theme is basically my HDR work in Liverpool, with maybe one or two non-hdr shots that show off Liverpool as the great city I see it as. "Images of Liverpool" is a rubbish name. Its got to be something good, something we can brand. By we I mean the design agency that is doing the branding. So I'm after inspiration. I'm not after any cliches. This is a big deal, press will be notified and flyers will be all around town. I'm not convinced about naming it "Vanilla Days" because that already exists. Dunno really whether the exhibition is an extension of it or a totally seperate thing. Having it seperate means new branding, new site.... tricky.

"Peter Carr = HDR" simple :)
on a more serious note, I think I would be tempted to stick with your Vanilla Days.

I would agree too. Like you say yourslf anything else means new branding and site. Do you have the time to get all that functional?
If you don't like 'Pete Carr - High Definition' how else would you describe your work, if you could pigeonhoile it?

Me, no. The design agency providing me with a free site, and a tonne of design work, yes :D
If you don't like 'Pete Carr - High Definition' how else would you describe your work, if you could pigeonhoile it?
I wouldn't describe it as "High Definition" at all. I use HDR, which is High Dynamic Range. Its just a tool though. If I brand it as some exhibition of a technical process, thats just a bit dull. Why would a passer by come in? They'd come in to see the pictures. Only a photo geek would be into the process.

that or simpply Pete Carr :)
They'd come in to see the pictures. Only a photo geek would be into the process.
Which leads to my question, how would 'you' describe the work you are exhibiting?
What about "Your Liverpool" or even "My Liverpool"?
though a tad cliched!
Dynamic Liverpool, by Pete Carr.
Liverpool - Dynamic City, by Pete Carr.
Uraban Dynamics, by Pete Carr.
Picture Liverpool,
Liverpool Pictured, by Pete Carr.
Liverpool, A City In Pictures, by Pete Carr.
.... Ok ... Ill keep thinking!

Pete Carr - Photographarr
I like "Uraban Dynamics, by Pete Carr" !!!
Maybe to silly but how about
Liverpool Living
Which leads to my question, how would 'you' describe the work you are exhibiting?
Simply, how I see Liverpool. Technology allows me to manipulate light in a way that lets me show people what I saw. Then of course I can discuss HDR and tone mapping.

Whats an "Uraban" ? :p Its catchy but sounds a bit... hmmmm. Like a dissertation :)

Dynamic ~ Pete Carr
City Dynamics ~ Pete Carr
I definitely think your name should be a standing feature in anything you decide on Pete, you want people to remember that first and foremost. Your work will speak for itself ;)
How about:
Liverpool - Captured by Pete Carr

Nah, not sure on them. First one is a total cliche about photography. The others just sound like a geeky way of trying to name it because I work with dynamic range. I can imagine laughing over it with people in the gallery... oh dear :) Maybe its not possible to give meaning to something so generic as photos of Liverpool.
How about:
Liverpool - Captured by Pete Carr
Not bad, but I'm not sure how you'd brand it.
High Dynamic Liverpool.
Dynamic Liverpool
Nah, for reasons just stated. Far too photo geek. Its photos of Liverpool, not showing off how to do HDR.
how about something like My Liverpool View - Pete Carr
There's already a book with a similar name.
Ok how about:
Liverpool Latitude 53 25N Global City by Pete Carr
"My Take - Liverpool according to Pete Carr."
"This is Liverpool"
still thinking...this is hard! :p
"Loving Liverpool"
Simply, how I see Liverpool.
What about keeping it as simple as that then, no cliches, just ...
'Seeing Liverpool' with/by Pete Carr.
Painting With Light
Liverpool My Way
The Continuing Story of Liverpool (a play on a Beatles track)
just a few...

Liverpool Latitude 53 25N Global City by Pete Carr
That's a cool idea, although maybe slimming it down to something like '53 25N' - coming from a design background, I'd really like that. I'd be thinking nice, clean bold lines and functional sans-serif text.

A little too long.

Annoyingly too close to another project I'm working on. They're good suggestions guys just not fitting. Its hard to find something suitable. The only thing that I feel has any meaning to me doesn't sit right. "Over the water." Its a phrase my Nan used to say when people asked where I lived. I've never lived in Liverpool, always "Over the water" and thats where I go and photograph. But I was thinking its a bit odd having an exhibition in Liverpool called "over the water" because people might think its about Wirral. I often over think things, and its probably the perfect name as it means something to me.

Bugger! How about the totally obvious 'P/C'?
'Defining Liverpool'
'Liverpool at Large'
'For the Love of the Liverbird' [a bit long i know]
Pete Carr's Culture, or some other play on Liverpools city of culture status? Pete Carr's Capital?
'Do you see what I see?'
'Liverpool Light'
Sorry, both are probably really cliched and not what you're wanting. Hope you'll be posting details of where and when the expo will be :)

Keep it simple otherwise it becomes pretentious. You have (i presume) the professionals in the design agency - what is their advice?
It may help to provide the rest of the info pete - i wouldn't asociate an exhibition with a brand so what is the exhibition a springboard for?
If you are looking to brand a project then avoid using your name for two reasons: i) you are not the project ii) you are a step removed.
If you are looking for a name for an exhibition only then consider your market - who do you sell to and what are their tastes.
Finally, what is on your short list at the moment?
Liverpool
.By Day
..By Night
...By Pete Carr
The lines above were indented one space extra per line when I typed but this was lost, replaced by stops for now
You could always refer to the new capital of culture status.
My Capital of Culture - by Pete Carr
It could become a series then, and you could release a new book each year, although it might mean traveling to other cities Pete.
How about
Next to the Mersey
or
Liverpudlia
or as it is the European City of Culture for 2008 some kind of play on it
Liverpool Culture
Cultural Vision 2008
Or
1. CarrPool - A photographers journey around the city.
2. Liverpool - View from a Lens.
On the across the water theme ....."Ferry across the Mersey"...now that would make a good song :D

I agree, this sounds like its about the Wirral.
You could play on it, with something like;

Pete,
you sorted this out now?
I have, thanks. I will update you all when the site is live which is hopefully this week.
An exhibition and study of the environs and populace of the City of Liverpool by means of the photographic medium.
By Peter Carr Esq. TPF(Hons)
hehe :D Ah well, I'll put you out your misery now :p Its going to be "Port of Culture." I spoke with my designer and he felt I should totally cash in on the whole culture year thing. I was reading Wikiwikiwaaaa and it hit me. Its a port! Duh. Liverpool's biggest import / export this year is culture. Its being held at a disused dock. My photos are simply about Liverpool's culture over the past few years. Win win. Port of culture. So its good because I can talk to people about that and they can quote me in the papers. Thats the idea anyway. It opens 3 weeks on Friday.... Its going to be huge tbh. I'm getting postcards made, posters done, a website, possible radio coverage and newspaper coverage.
Pete how long is it going to be on for?
3 weeks. I'll make a thread when the branding / site is done.
oh ok Pete shame it wont be on when i come for some culture later in the year then, dont think i can justify an earlier trip good luck with it anyway
Thanks :) I'm sure there'll be a movie of it online at some point.
Do I get a prize for being the only one to suggest anything with "culture" in it ? :D
I like the idea of TPF after one's name - how do you actually qualify for this ? ;)
Oh god no. I'm just Pete. I'm not Pete Carr BSc (Hons) TPF BBQ
Oh god no. I'm just Pete. I'm not Pete Carr BSc (Hons) TPF BBQ
How about Pete Carr BSc (Hons) OMG TBH BBQ FFS LOL? :p
Sounds FTW :D Imagine that on a business card, haha.
Hi Pete,
I’ll definitely try and pop along to this, it sounds like it should be pretty good!
I am new here, but I have followed your photoblog for over a year now and more recently flickr as well so I will be keeping an eye out for the announcement!
Alex
If I hear the word 'culture' many more times in this city I may just go on a killing spree. And we're not even into month two yet! Sorry, but I'm fed up with everything being culture this and culture that. There's an idea for a bit of photo journalism though - someone could go and visit our sister culture city this year and see what's going on there.
Anyway, look forward to visiting the exhibition, regardless of the name!
Nice one Pete. Be interested to hear about the "mechanics" of setting it up etc.
Oh theres lots of them :)
Do I get a prize for being the only one to suggest anything with "culture" in it ? :D
:p If there are any prizes for 'culture' I think you will find my original post on Page 1 of thread takes it! Unless its a kick up the ass from pete, in which case, its all yours!:lol:
