Where on earth do I start - Help!!!

A real newbie here. I hope someone can point me in the right direction. All I want to do is cut and paste (sorry about the terminology, I'm more used to Word) a subject from a photo and place onto a different background. The purpose is for creating advertising poster for vocalist with all the starbursts n stuff.

What should I be using - I have PS but an old version and am new to it.
Is there (in an ideal world) a really quick and easier programme to use?
Am I fooling myself and this is gonna take longer than I think?

Would really appreciate some direction.

Open both images seperately

select the element you want to copy and CTRL C (or Mac variant).

Open the background picture and ctrl v - you can move this image around the background as much as you like until you merge the layers :)

Thanks so much. Am enjoying playing around with this. It will definitely keep me off the streets and out of pubs lol

^^ er.... keeping you out of the pubs isn't a good thing necassarily :D

You can also drag the portion of the image you want from one "canvas" to the other
