I have spent months and months researching cameras and lenses. I have decided the canon 400d is the right camera to start with. I even made some progress towards lens choice, but the more I read about photography, the more variables there seem to be. Certainly more than I can cope with is seems.

My hoby is rock climbing. It takes me to some awesome places which I would like to photgraph, so I guess a need a wide angle lense for this. Also I think a telephoto lens would be of great use because photographing climbers is difficult if you have to get close to them. I would also like to try some of the projects that are suggested in the camera magazines so something that is usful in a more everyday (photographing churches/flower pots/faces/etc)
Thats what I want to do.

Technical question:- the 400d sensor is half the size of a full frame sensor. Thus a wide angle lens will not be as 'wide' as it would be on a better camera. Is this a real limit to wide angle photgraphy using the 400d? (by real I mean can you still catch that small room full of people shot using a 400d?)

Any help greatly appreciated :)

(Max total budget £1000, out of which i need to get tripods and filters and cable release and ......)

Hello,
The 400D is a 1.6 crop body, so if you got a 10-20mm lens it would be in fact 16-32mm, similarly a 70-200mm is 112-320mm.
You really wont really see the difference unless you either have a full frame camera or someone you know has one and you use theirs. On a wide angle you get loads in and can get really close. Check out some example shots.

If i were you and starting out, get the 400D and kit lens 18-55mm (good deals to be had ATM) just to see if you enjoy it, then if you do in a few months buy a new lens or 2.

You really need to know what kind of lens you want. Zoom, Macro, Wide Angle, etc etc.

I have spent months and months researching what kit i wanted and i have finally decioded on the lot i have in my sig so would recomend any of them. That lot below though cost about £2000, something you will want to spend if you love taking photos.
