I received some new filters today, one being an orange filter - so I thought I would try my hand at a black and white photo with the new 50mm 1.8 lens and filter attached.

Since Hannah was finally asleep, she became the model for this attempt

C&C welcome

Tonal range looks good as do the skin tones.
Seems about right - are you happy with the result? 'cause it means nothing otherwise. All the plaudits in the world are nothing if you're not satisfied with the results.

I am happy.. but then I've been happy with the results before only for someone to come and point out areas where I have gone wrong.

Since it's my first proper try I thought I would let some people with skill look at it and advise where I went wrong :)

No, it's OK - maybe a bit too much space at the top of the frame perhaps...

I think you should be happy with that. Very young babies are a problem as you always have to think of that head being supported which usually means someone holding them or you lie them down flat and take the shot from above which you seem to have done here. The foreground blanket looks to be just blowing out in places, but that's pretty minor, so give yourself a pat on the back.

Very nice shot, I am no expert but it looks great to me :)

Not a bad shot, but for me, the left hand (on the right of the picture) seems to be in better focus than the face does.

It's a lovely picture.
At a guess I would say you used the 50mm 1.8?

Thats not a bad guess there bachs ;) don't let his opening line fool ya :whistle2:

The tonal range looks good, have you tried a tighter crop, trim down some of the upper space, and i'd come in tighter on the left, probably taking out the o.f.f arm with more of a square crop.

I did indeed use the 50mm 1.8 with an orange filter ;)

The pic wasn't cropped at all, just resized and then a border added (as well as the levels etc) Feel free to have a play if you like. I can upload the full size image if that makes it easier?

@Gfk - I used the centre focussing point and focussed on her left eye so the hand shouldn't be more in focus than her face.

Anyway, thanks for all the kind words. I am happy with the results - especially since it was my first attempt.
