Having grown up in the pre-digital age, I am still constantly amazed at all the bits of information I can glean from my camera having taken a shot. I'm sure I would be even more amazed if I understood it all! I read in magazines about checking your histogram ... so I do - but I haven't the faintest idea what I'm looking for!! Is there any kind of rule of thumb to what I should be aiming for ... all stacked up towards the right? the left? spread out across the histogram? Or does it vary according to what type of picture you're taking? Can anyone explain it all to me in a sort of Keep It Simple Stupid kind of way??

If you want to buy a book there's "Understanding RAW Photography" by Andy Rouse, it explains a lot including how to understand and use the histogram.
