I was frustrated this morning as they were all hunting together again but I still couldn't get more than one in a fame  But anyway...
Oh and a guy walking his dog stopped to talk to me (well actually I stopped him as he was using our drive as a short cut, so I was intending to tell him off LOL) and told me he has been watching them hunt every morning too. Plus he told me about another special couple of residents we have in the dyke at the bottom of the field.. Little Egrets  Just as he was telling me they (2 of them) flew up and away. But apparently they have been there every day for 4 days, so who knows  Unfortunately in my dive to go tell him off I left my camera on the kitchen work top so missed the shot of them.
I am going to sit nd wait for a better shot ever morning from now on.
Thanks for looking xxxx
Jo

Fantastic stuff Jo
.... and he's me wetting my pants over a visiting Woody!
I would imagine its only a matter of time if youre sitting in wait for them, good luck
Lucky you !! I'm sure it'll be worth the wait. Don't forget to post your latest photos.
Cool Jo :) is it only mornings you see them ? just wondering if its worth popping up for a cuppa ;) lol

I am so envious Jo  where did you say you lived:naughty:.
Ian, they are about in the evenings too, but I find the light is worse as the sun goes down over the field if you know what I mean. And at the moment they are around from dawn till about 10am. I see them mostly together between 8 and 9am.
This morning I was also treated to a fight between a Kestrel and one of the Barn owls, but the light was worse than anything and can't even make the Kestrel out on the shots LOl.
If you honestly want to come and see you're more than welcome, as are select few others. But please understand I'm not gonna let any tom **** or harry come, as they are protected after all ;) ... oh and I know where they are roosting/brooding now too hehe.
We have hopefully got the Barn Owl trust coming soon to document them.
Thanks all xxxx
Jo ill drop you a PM :)
I dont blame you for being careful about people coming round :) i have peregrine falcons on my doorstop :)

Just a teensy weensy bit fanciful I fancy Ian ... :suspect:
Nice captures Jo ... ... you are very fortunate indeedy to enjoy these creatures so regularly ... :D
:p
Thanks Ven :)
Today's selection, only one of the beauties around this morning and only for a very short time, she flew back into the roosting area soon after and didn't seem to be coming out any more. Can hardly blame them, the wind is terrible and it was having a hell of a time keeping still.

Very nice Jo:clap:.
Can someone tell me why Yahoo is asking for my Password when i try to view Jos larger images ???
Yeah they are cropped, but these were all within 15-25ft of me this morning :D I was using my 70-200 L f/4, and I think they were all ISO 800, speed 250 and f/4.
Can't wait to have a play with your big one
Sorry Mitch, should be OK now

This is very likely to be the reason they are out so much during the day Jo ... :suspect: ... they rely almost entirely on their hearing to capture food and wind and rain hinders this dramatically ... ... so with the weather we have been having lately it is hardly surprising you are seeing them fly so frequently for significant forays in daylight ...
They are also extremely lightweight birds and will be blown around in anything other than a moderate breeze so they do tend to stay well tucked up in windy and rainy weather ... ;)
Another lovely set of images Jo ... :D
:p
Ven, I see them more on the fine days though

Fine days after rough nights would actually make sense Jo ... ... but if they are hungry they will hunt any time ... and fine weather presents ideal conditions for their hunting methodology ... ;)
They are also quite likely to be young from last year as it is unusual to see three together as adults because they are territorial ... :suspect: ... and if this is the case I would expect to see them go their separate ways fairly soon as this year's season gets under way ... :D
:p

Hehehehehe well actually its not Ven :) i can see them from my balcony with naked eye, just a little too far off to get decent detailed shots of them but they are there :) Definitely not as close as Jo's barn owls though :)
These are wonderful, Jo. Its great to see something different. Barn Owls are one of my favourites.
Well done you, and I bet you're excited as hell .. I know I would be!

Well we have had 2 for well over a year, maybe even 2  But I presume that's a pair... You're probably right on the third.
I do have a question though, do they eat while out hunting if they make a kill? or do they always take it back to the roost to eat?
Oh and thanks Janice.. and yes I am :D

They would generally carry it back to a favourite perch to devour their meal Jo ... :D
:p
Hmm, I wonder if they have young already then, as they are definitely taking them back to the roost (is it called the roost btw? LOL). Annnnd would last years young be helping feed them? Cause all 3 go back to the roost with their kills...

Far too early to have young yet Jo imhgo ... ... although stranger things have happened I suppose ... :D
The previous young would not normally hang around to help their parents as they will be keen to do their own bit for the species ... :naughty: ... again though stranger things do happen ...
It will be interesting to hear the Trust's take on the situation ... ;)
I would guess they will count the 'roost' as a favourite perch and may well choose it to eat their prey ... :suspect: ... you don't say whether this is a hole or box or what though Jo ...
:p
Ven I would but then it would be obvious to anyone who knows the area where they are, and I don't want to risk any potential disturbance if you see where I'm coming from.
