This is the thread to discuss the theme, competition, and entries to the POTY 2008 Competition, Round 02 (February).

Entries can be found here (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=47298).

Discussion only in here please, do not use this thread to submit your entry :)

This month, our sponsor is YoPhoto (www.yophoto.co.uk), digital printers, specialising in professional photobooks and calendars.

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/images/externallogos/yophoto_500x100.gif (www.yophoto.co.uk)

The prize for the winner of this month is (naturally) a photobook (http://www.yophoto.co.uk/photo_book_pages/photobook.asp), of a size chosen by the winner, to include delivery to mainland UK.

Edit : Here's (http://www.ephotozine.com/article/Yophoto-online-photobook) a link to a review of YoPhoto.

Thats quite limiting if you don't like taking pictures of people! Unless u can come up with something clever and symbolic....hmm.....puts thinking cap on!

And thats what I like about the comp - it takes you outside your comfort zone! People aren't my strong point but what the heck - its a challenge :D

Lovely entry from helium_junkie!
But, according to the EXIF data, taken in August 2005!

I know this was discussed before in the January thread, but shouldn't the rules be encouraging people not to dip into their stock photos?

HanC
02-02-2008, 16:09
I completely see your point but think it might be a bit unrealistic though...people do have busy lives some of the time...i suppose it depends on whether we want to sacrifice the number of people entering, as less may do so if they are not allowed to enter a previously-taken shot...?

Yv
02-02-2008, 16:27
Great theme Marcel, I think we need more that push people outside their comfort zone and encourage some lateral thinking. I can already think of 3 or 4 scenarios that dont come under the automatic thought of 'group of mum, dad and kids' type shots - whether I manage to capture my ideas is another matter of course

Borats Baby
02-02-2008, 16:51
Hmm, Family, that is a toughy !! One would immediately think of a family portrait, but then thats just far to original and not likely to impress.....

HanC, can I borrow that thinking cap when you've finished with it please !!

Marcel
02-02-2008, 17:11
:)

People are allowed to archive dip if they like, but it isnt necessarily in the spirit of the competition.
Nevertheless, I wont be losing any sleep if someone dips their archives. (Also, dont forget exif data / camera dates can be out ;))

I think on reflection it is quite a hard one, I hope people can still come up with some ideas :D
Bear in mind it doesnt have to be people, like helium_junkie has shown.
Heck it doesnt have to be people or animals. It could be a picture of a table at christmas time with finished dinnerplates and crackers etc ;) You know what Im getting at...it doesnt *have* to have people in it :D

Lets try think outside the box!

dlh
02-02-2008, 17:23
I shan't be losing sleep either, but as you say it just doesn't seem to be in the spirit of the competition.

I'll be grabbing hold of granny this month. Kills two birds with one stone :D

This is a difficult one and will take some thought. Like others I'd rather see images taken specifically for the comp but it's no big deal, at least we will be seeing new images that haven't been viewed before.

My entry is up, it's a shot from my travels a few months ago. I will also be trying to get a new shot, so just a place holder for now. It's a difficult one this. It's nice to see other peoples creativity on the theme already though. keep up the good work

hypnotic,
Many thanks for pointing me to the correct picture - I use ACDSee to edit my pictures, but have got Elements 5 as well - my pc is so old that I rarely use it, as it slows it all down so much. Anyway, in ACDSee, I resize my pictures, but don't seem to be able to get them to the right size to upload them, but slowly I am working it out (remember, I am an oldie..).
Anyway, enough excuses, but never enough thanks for the help given !

Betty
04-02-2008, 09:05
Because I dont want people thinking Ive stolen an idea :D

They might not know I am not looking at the entries until voting day, and by sheer bad luck Ive had the same idea as someone else

a1ex2001
04-02-2008, 09:48
I don't think it's a case of stealing ideas, if you look at last months entries there are a lot of entries that share a common idea but offer very different results and interpretations. It would be both unfortunate and very unlikely for you to take exactly the same picture as someone else.

Marcel

This was my idea as well but I've no will power and just been to look. Some really nice ones so far.

If you're looking for a buddy then I'm happy to audition for the job!

Actually I'm a complete novice and completely rubbish, which is why I haven't put my name forward for any of the meets that have taken place around here. Don't want to show myself up. So you wouldn't gain much from me, other than the company.

During a walk in the cemetery, I came across a grave, which had an explosion of colour on it and a woman was tending to it. I told her that it was a lovely tribute and only after speaking to her did I read the headstone, and realise that it was one of the footy players who died in the Munich Air Disaster in 1958.

Fans have been laying tributes over a number of days and it was the 50th anniversary of the crash on the 6th of Feb.

One thing i'm a bit worried about though is people being put off from using a shot because someone else has already used a certain idea in their entry. I've had an idea in my head since the new theme was announced, and if someone else also had that idea then fair enough...there's room for two (or three :p). As long as you know you haven't plagiarised someone's idea, what's there to be bothered about?

Got to say I agree, I'd be a bit miffed if somone put up a picture that was practically identical but if it's just a theme then the more the merier I say.

I did it last month, I'd been planning to shoot jelly Babies from the off and someone else posted some up very early on. It didn't stop me posting as I thought my picture was significantly different enough fo it to not be an issue.

I do agree with you....although even if you do know that you haven't pinched someone's idea, they don't know that, do they? I do feel some of the 'creativity' and uniqueness behind the idea is diminished if the pictures are very similar.

I'm not entirely sure I'm not going to use it, but I would rather use something that hadn't yet been covered.

kmlc - we don't start voting until the end of the month.

I've just come back from 4 days at Disneyland Paris, and was hoping to get a shot there, but failed. I don't post pictures of my family up, but had an idea of having them walking towards the castle (so only their backs), hand in hand. I didn't even try it, as I knew there were too many people about, and trying to get an 18th month old to pose was nigh on impossible. I did have another idea, which I tried, but didn't think it was anygood. But having just reviewed the photos posted since I last looked, Lady P has posted a much better one on a similar theme. I do have a back-up, which I took in the first week of the comp, but that idea has already been done too. However, come the end of the month, I will not be put of by the fact that someone has already posted a similar photo.

I have a question for anyone who can answer... this may be very silly, so apologies in advance!

Once all the voting etc is finished for the previous month, are we then free to put the image onto our gallery, or does the whole 'no images that have been seen before on TP' still apply?

Thanks!

Tommo, I find your photo brilliant. Exactly what I want to do when my little 'un arrives. Did you use a tripod and timer? Or just your right hand?

Was is shot it B&W or have you done some PP?

Either way, it's excellent. It captures 'Family', flawlessly.

I took it in black and white then adjusted the levels, then cropped it. I used my right hand, and trying to get him to open his hand was pointless! So we got him to grab daddy's finger! Glad someone likes it, I might get a vote then if I'm lucky

Really struggling to come up with a pic for this one! Missed a fabulous opportunity on Wednesday. Was walking through a shopping centre past an open fronted greeting card shop. It was packed with school kids all buying valentines cards :D With all the valentines displays and all the youngsters around, the perfect caption popped in my head "Future Family's?" or maybe "prospective family" :D unfortunately I didn't have my camera and not sure I would have been brave enough anyway :D

That's a lovely shot Cutsie!

:D Thank you so much! I never thought of otters as being 'family' creatures until I saw them that day...they were even talking to each other...or so I thought anyway :cuckoo:

There are some great shots this month, gonna be tough to decide which are my favs!

The collective term for a group of otters is 'family'

A group of beavers is also called a 'family'

Anyone seen a group of beavers lately?

Just posted mine. It similar to tommo's. It was actually taken on the same day as tommo's, but he posted his first, so I held back hoping to get something different. It's really difficult to find a unique idea for this, and all the ideas I've had have all been done now. So I might as well post this one up. I have plenty of old animal shots similar to the ones posted already, but am determined to try to actually take a shot for each round.

Fair play - I want to take one for each round too, makes it more interesting for my own personal experience.

Nice shot, I like the detail you got in the lines of the skin

This time last month, 82 people had entered. Looks like people are waiting till the end of the month to post?

Saying that, there are some wonderful shots this month, Aimee, loving yours by the way

richmond
18-02-2008, 06:08
Are they waiting till the month end or is the theme proving to be a bit more challengeing ?

I've used an old photo for now because the other idea I have is proving difficult to shoot.

Some really good entries so far. It's going to be easy to pick lots of favourites.

I have some ideas however since car crash and the resulting whiplash I have been unable to put even my handbag across my shoulder let alone put a camera around my neck so think I might have to pass this month :( I know people will say hold camera in hand but its not for me, so we will have to wait and see what happens over the next week, but good luck to everyone. :)

I'm struggling this month. Took some shots of my nephew but they are really not very good as I don't have the right equipment.

I have a shot which I'm toying with the idea of using but not sure if its too far outside that ol' thinking box!!

As Richmond says - get better soon Sue, but DO take it easy - whiplash is underestimated in my opinion, and it took me months before I could work a full day. Are you having any treatment for it - massage, maybe acupuncture may be a big help - it worked for me by helping me use the right muscles in the right way..

I'm still working on a few alternative ideas but as I'm running out of time I've got something in.

It was actually quite tricky to get a reasonable shot of the Lego characters without nasty bright reflections on their faces. I ended up setting a longish exposure and dancing round the room with the flashgun over my head hitting the test button repeatedly with it set on manual low power and with a milk carton over the end. Thank goodness the curtains were shut or the neighbours would have been getting worried

I had loads of ideas, but no way of doing them well :(

Was going to put mine and the fellas Nintendo DSs side by side, then I thought of using the Wii and the Gamecube as well...

Down the road from me, someone has a new style beetle and an old one, they look awesome side by side, but I drove by the other day and one was missing :(

I took this ages ago, hence the bad crop, I was only a beginner ;)

Finally got a shot in, really had no ideas for this, so went with a shot from slightly earlier in the year when we had family visit, my cousin (on the right) thought it would be a great idea for everyone to pose on the cement balls in the park, luckily I had to take the photo so couldnt be in it! :p

Probably way over processed, but I was having fun :p

To Jimmy Lemon:

Can you tell me if that was shot in RAW? and what PP was done to achieve that effect? Were there any filters used.

I think its HDR and Tone mapping, but not sure.

Excellent picture.

Excellent picture.

The sky was tonemapped as it was just an orangy mess in the original shot, the foreground and people is almost as shot, hint of saturation and a contrast boost is all really.

and still nobody has done a mafia entry, which was going to be my take on "family" until a bad dose of flu wiped out most of the back half of february for me.

I doubt I'll get time now, but the plan was a St Valentine's Day Massacre themed shot, using the definitively historically incorrect version from "Some like it hot" for the content references. So a patch of concrete floor with a broken toothpick, a red rose (for st valentine's day), a poker hand with three 8s, and a splash of ketchup, maybe a shot glass on its side too. Not much chance of spent cartridges or the smoking muzzle of a Thompson. The toe of a shiny shoe with a spat showing may have been a feature. Title: "Goodbye Charlie"
Possibly in sepia and a bit of aging (folded & torn looking).

Anybody who thinks they can pull it off please try, it'd be a bit different.

In my research I found that the photographer who "shot" the real massacre was John Miller : http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/USAmassacre.htm
