I was bidding on a D300 yesterday and got out bid. It sold all was fine.

I got an email today offering me a second chance offer of 500 quid.

Scam?

most likely a scam, what was your maximum bid was it £500

NathanJT
05-02-2008, 16:58
Yes, completely!

I've seen this before. The seller will request either Western Union, offer to send you a cheque for far more (advance cheque fraud) or rip off your payment details in some way or another.

I'd go and fnd a VERY long barge pole if I were you!

tell him cash on collection or no deal, and you won;t see him for dust ;)

It's scammier than a scammer, scamming a nigerian banker ;)

Thought it would be like! Too good to be true. 500 was my max bid.
It says accepts paypal?

I have done this legitimately on Ebay... when the 1st buyer opts out you can contact another bidder and offer them a deal.

At the end of the day if it doesn't feel right leave it...

u could risk paying by paypal using a credit card, if the milk turns out to be sour, get the credit card co to do a charge back to paypal and let them sort it out...

you're playing with fire though

Yeh second chance offers are normal. But a company offering a D300 for 500? Brand new.
lol -1 feedback

MichaelPlace
05-02-2008, 17:04
it could be genuine if the first bidder messed them about.

The only way to be sure and cover your back is to ask to collect in person. Or check if you'll be covered by paypal

DinoS

sounds a biit low for a d300, was it brand new? is there a collect it option if so take it.

Unless the seller has had a mate bidding hoping to get the price up and it backfired.

Hmmm. You only get 150 protection on paypal though :(

mattyh

pay by credit card. Then you can get them to charge the whole lot back to paypal if it's dodgy.

The way to tell if it is a real 2nd chance offer is to go to your messages on ebay. To be an official offer still covered by the ebay rules the seller has to continue going through ebay and set up a second chance settlement. You would have got an official looking ebay email (not a private one addressed from someones own email account). If it is through the ebay site and in your messages then it should be legitimate - if not I would bin it and forget it ever was offered.

My thoughts are, if the original deal fell trough, then why don't they just re-list it? It should go for near £1K:shrug:

Pay pal covers you upto £500.
So dodgy there about only paying £150.
I deliberatly paid aditional £14 postage to get fully insured postage on the D50 and kit i baught of ebay so could pay with paypal and covered upto £500 with paypal.
As stated may be lagit but doughtfull, pick up best bet but i would go with someone with lots of glowing feedback or someone within a reasonable distance say 25 to 50 miles away or even closer so you can collect if its close it often allows you to bid a bit higher as no postage costs.
All the best,
james

The moral is "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is"

Look at the quote at the top of the auction page... Item No: 140204030149 if you want a look;)

"The seller ended this listing early to sell to the high bidder(s) at current bid price."

And with a -1 Feedback, I'd steer well clear!

Smells fishier than a fishy thing in a fish market, surrounded by, well, you get the picture:)

It is also a way to inflate the price. If the highest bid wasn't valid then you should be paying a little more than the bid BELOW yours....not your actual bid.

I've had several 2nd chance offers over the past year or so but always respond by offering just above the bid below mine and not my maximum bid.....only been accepted once!

A better bet would be to pay me the money and I guarantee you will have a camera, it will be an old piece of tat mind but it's a better deal than what's on the table here.

And for that money I will hand deliver it.

A D300 sells for £566 because the seller ended the auction early to sell to the highest bidder, then you get a second chance offer at £500.

You have to ask if this is a scam?:shake:

As for only paying by a credit card via paypal.....why would you bother:shrug: Unless of course you get some sort of perverse pleasure chasing up banks for money!

To all those who said "walk away"

To all the others....come on people "get real"

The seller has a feedback score of -1 and is offering a camera at half the normal price. I'm surprised you even bid on it in the first place. You should think yourself lucky that you got outbid and have nothing more to do with this seller.

Having done this several times, it's not chasing of any kind... one phone call and they've sorted it.

because if you're trusting paypal without using credit card, then you'll lose your money if it turns out to be dodgy.

I didn't say it was... I was advising that using a CC with paypal was the best course of action SHOULD they proceed.

I believe i said it was scammier than a scammer, or something like that ;)

Presumably you are bidder6 and if so how could a scammer get your email address? or send you an Ebay message?

I saw this when the price was £2.20. :thinking:My 1st question to myself was if I had a £1000+ bit of kit brand new would I put it up for sale for 99p. I kept an eye on it but it then jumped very quickly to £300 - £500. Sorry, for me this is a no brainer ..... if it sounds too good to be true it most certainly is. Leave it.

That negative feedback was left shortly after they joined and started selling, then 5 months later they turn up to sell again.
As stated a con.

But on another point bargains can be had just be savy and watch the market prices and sellers.

I feared a seller would back out of a auction when i was highest bidder on a car.

Bloke had cracking feedback but expected him to back out as was £1500 below book price for private sale.

He Didnt and one happy bunny.

Bargains can be had but buyer beware.

I just looked at the link. Close the book and walk away. there isn't a deal here. Not with a seller with -1 transactions and 0% feedback.
Another way to look at the 'risk' is, how would you feel if it turned out that you lost £500+ quid and didn't heed the warnings.

I recently saw an ebay ad from a Hong Kong dealer selling a new D80 with a 18-200VR lens for £425 and £25 postage. I looked closely and walked away...

Matty....don't knock these Nigerian bankers, they're good blokes.

I've invested all my money with one. If it doesn't increase by 5% a month then he'll email me to appologise.....seems to be doing well at the moment, 9 months and not a single email....:D
