Background for still life photos

Hi i have a question...

What should we use in photoshop to create a nice background for still life photos. I would like them to be plain but help the object stand out. Any ideas?

You'd be better to start with a good background when you take the shot, honestly that would save you an awful lot of ps work afterwards.
