I have been trying for months to get a decent bird shot and then this little fella appeared

First thing i did was tweak the levels, then adjusted the saturation and wound it by about 10 , then ran some unsharp mask. Theres a tutorial on the forum on how its done ill find the link for you :) I didnt follow 100% but it gives some very good rough guidelines

I'll have a read and try it out on my copy and see if I can get it as good as yours
