I'm still new to this photography lark. I've just got back from New York and these are some of my first attempts using the manual mode.

My friend who I was visiting out there was giving me a few tips along the way, and I borrowed his tripod for picture 4.

Some great shots - I'm off soon and it's going to be great.

Can I ask - taking shots at that time of night, do you feel safe with a camera around your neck?

I can't imaging doing that in London, at least not without losing the camera and my wallet in the process.

Cheers,
James

Awesome. Amazing. I'm going in two weeks. One Q though - where was no. 5 taken from? That, and no. 1 are my favourites. It's all about atmos!

Just to put your mind at rest I spend quite a lot of time in NYC and I feel 100 times safer than London just being out and about, with or without camera gear. Obviously there are the areas to stay clear of like any big city but for the big tourist places you will be one of hundreds of other tourists with their big camera bags an expensive gear all taking shots so don't worry too much

Like your pics a lot, I wasn't happy with too many of my shots during my last visit, the only one I was quite pleased with (from a wacky point of view) was this one:

Oh i have a picture of that building in the last shot...I spent new year 2006 in New York wandering rounds taking pics after dark and was fine...the other half even wandered out of hotel for a fag at 2.30am and came back safely.

Jimmy i think i am right in saying the thing in the road in no1 is a vent chimney for the steam from the sewers or along those lines.

You know, i was thinking the same too!

I'd love to go to NY. I'm really going to have to save up a few pennys i think.

Thanks guys, as for the questions

Number 1 is one of the vents for the sewage system i think.

Number 5 was taken from up the empire state building. I must have taken about 50 shots from up there to try and get a good one. A tripod would have been handy!

As for safety, most of these shots were in and around Broadway and Times square. There are loads of tourists around all carrying cameras so I felt quite safe. To be honest though its not something i always think about, when i probably should!
