What a cracking idea. I've got a nifty I'm prepared to donate to this cause (Canon f/1.8). Its been to the Sahara a couple of times so its full of sand and you can hear the sand grating inside when it autofocuses. It would therefore be perfect for this type of exercise because its now become disposable. It is in otherwise perfect working condition - glass-wise its fine. Actually it works all ok. It just makes a noise.
So, line up folks. Lets hear your ideas.
Brilliant idea. I'm off to NYC in 10 days ;)
That's really a great idea. We'd have the second best-travelled lens in the world (after the one in Hubble maybe... :p)
If one of those tiny GPS trackers were to accompany the nifty-fifty we could plot its travels and what it saw there by linking the photos to the GPS coordinates and uploading it all to Google Earth!

Your going to be sending a dirty Canon around arn't you. :(
This is a great idea. If the lens gets far enough around the world and into enough bizzare places it could get quite famous.
Perhaps once it's made a name for itself it should be ebay'd for a nominated charity?

Great idea, I'm suddenly gutted I don't own a Cannon. :(
Nothing to stop Nikon owners doing the same.
Could have a competition.
This is a great idea! I am off to Australia and HongKong in May (8th-26th) I could take it there ;) It fits on a 400D doesn't it?
:canon:
a fantastic idea. I'm off to Majorca in June and possibly Las Vegas in October

We'll have to get a travelling Nikon 50mm to spur this along with some healthy competition..
Who has one that they want to chuck in their sand pit?

Sounds a good idea, many years ago about 20 I sold all my Nikon kit apart from my Nikon FA and a 50mm lens. The idea was only to use a 50mm for 2 years in order to make me a better photographer, I think it worked.
can anyone offer a Nikon 50mm?? Even an old one with manual focus would do?
I wanna play :D

It's a great idea :) Might be an idea just to edit the first post Pete? Oh, and spain in June :)
i think this is an excellent idea. you could make a book of the photos at the end of the year
Superb idea! I'm in NYC and Boston on 13th April if it's not bagsied for then? It'll get some more airmiles :0

sending a lens..??
a...lens...?//
now a camera would be more like it, but a lens
why don't y'awl just use yer own:suspect:
I participated in a travelling camera group, infact, I shipped it.
It went to few places in the UK, then Europe and finished up in Australia.
It was fun, got stuck a few times with a few flakeys, and the participants were mostly non photo nutters, but it was good to see the images posted at the end, after a year of travel.
a...lens.....
thats a quite divisive suggestion, for a forum community..

Ooo... I like this idea! If the Nikon lens is kindly donated to the cause then I'm in. I'm going to Canada 15th-27th March and hopefully Egypt in July. Plus I travel with my work, so if it's free then I can help it earn extra air miles! ;)

You guys will have to sort it out amongst yourselves.
I would suggest 2 threads.
1. To organise the whereabouts of the lens
2. To post pics taken with it
I'll take a back seat from now on. But I have a few requests, seeing as its my lens. I hope they're not unreasonable.
1. By all means take photos of whatever you want to, but its an ace portrait lens, so, please use it wide open and take photos of people.
2. Please take a photo of the lens being well looked after.
3. Please have fun with it.
........
4. Its on loan. So, please can I have it back? At some point.
5. Oh, yeah. And if someone has the skills, I'd suggest a website to put all the pics up - you know - niftyfiftyonitstravels.com or whatever
:)

Well this looks like a perfect opportunity for Nikon owners to out-class them canon lot.
Forget the 50mm, if Messiah Khan donates his 300/2.8 that would really be one in the eye to the opposition.
What do you say MK?

Great response so far guys and gals :) The Nifty is heading to a lot of cool places. If people want to include brochures and leaflets of some of the place you have been then please do. Not sure how Mobile Virgin is sending it but a tuperware box with the Lens inside its own box would be great. - People could sign it :)
Pete
ok... website should now be live (it's not registered anywhere, and no one else knows about it but us). So... content. Any thoughts, suggestions. Anyone know of any good wordpress themes etc etc?
i dont know much about websites ( my own is done by template) but....... would it be possible to create a map or link opn the site similar to the tog buddies thing, that can track the lens ....... so say each time it reaches a new destination a marker can be placed on the map?
Fi
hmm... possibly might be. That'll take a bit more time and I'm going away tomorrow... sounds like a job for when I'm back at work
I could take a portrait of David Coulthard at the British Grand Prix fan club meeting, thats about all i could imagine i could do with the nifty fifty...
That will be 03/07/08 -> 06/07/08 not sure if that time is already signed up for.

It seems to me that Mobilevirgin is going to be without a very useful lens for a long time. I would like to suggest that we all send him a £1 coin to buy himself a replacement, and the same for whoever donates the Nikon lens.
Sounds like a good idea....
Is there a thread yet for 'booking' it? I'd love to have it with me for the USA on 13th March.

20th March I am going to egypt so it could see some pyramids....
dam, just saw the post above.
lol,
brilliant idea.
If nobody else can come up with one then I'm willing to donate my manual focus 55mm micro nikkor that was donated to me.
Failing that, we could always have a little paypal donation towards the cost of one from fleabay? they're not really expensive and those who donate would get first dibs on the loan!

That's a very kind suggestion and I appreciate the thought. But there really is no need - it was my offer to donate the lens to the project. I wasn't asked to do it. I'm as interested as anyone to see what the results of the exercise will be.
The lens is surplus to requirements at the moment - I bought a f/1.4 just before Xmas - and, as I said the other day, its in far from perfect condition anyway.
I'm just happy that it will get out and about in good hands.
So, I hope this isn't taken the wrong way, because I know the suggestion was well meant, but in the nicest possible way - thanks but no thanks.

Show the world what our niftyfifties can do and see!
Upload the photos they take to Google Earth! (http://www.panoramio.com/upload/)
• Photos with coordinates in EXIF are mapped automatically, you don't need to map them manually.
• Photos are resized automatically, you can upload photos in their original size (max. 5 MB)
• It is recommended to map the photo in the place where it was taken, not over the subject of the photo.
Fire up your Google Earth, tick 'Terrain', 'Geographic Web', and '3D Buildings', zoom in on the pyramids, and see the photos and their vantage points. Those photos are the standard. Can our niftyfifties do better?
Let's tag our niftyfifty photos. May I suggest (duh): TP08niftyfiftyC or TP08niftyfiftyN?
^^ Good idea :)
Could we use the 55mm that ghandi has kindly offered as a nifty 50?
Unless all the nikon onwers fancy kicking in a fiver or so each to buy one, then sell it on when we're done and split the proceeds?

so you're not going on safari, or to the Emirates, or somewhere else exotic soon? OK, then your challenge – should you choose to accept it – is to shoot a shopping spree in the high street.
That's very exotic to the average Kikuyu or Arab! Almost pornographic...

That's a bit premature, don't you think? Let's first get the niftyfifties on tour and collect a couple hundred exposures from all over the globe. Then we may have something tangible to submit for consideration. Right now that's still just hot air/wishful thinking...
I had a quick look on e-bay, doesn't look like there are any second hand ones on there at the moment, a new one would be about £75 though, which is still reasonable if enough people chip in. I'll keep an eye out for a 2nd hander though and if I see one I'll grab it while it's on.

In the seventies Nikon's rise to the fore of global photography was based on the image of ruggedness and reliability of their cameras and lenses.
Let's see and show the world how they fare today against numero uno competitor Canon.
The Canon N/F's grating Sahara sand is a PR coup for starters! I must admit.
(Supposing the photos hold up, of course).
The Nikon N/F will be hard pressed to catch up on that.
Sorry, been a bit lame at checking up on this over the week... bl**dy work.
Good luck Matty, I hope you get somewhere with this.

Welcome back, mac. Looking forward to your harvest. Have you guys thought about a kind of a 'format' for reporting here on the niftyfifty's travels and travails? Do you aim to post a half dozen great shots of any one trip, or dozens of exposures in a slideshow. Like a photographic essay. And while talking about photographic essays, how about collecting all of those shots as high-res files, in a central location. Then make a coffee table book: the nifty fifty on tour, subtitle: the first 12 months.

Matty, no offense meant, but checking this thread you have stated a number of times that you couldn't do this or that because you are busy working or doing other stuff. It is always 'mañana, mañana'. That has happened at every occasion that this came up in this thread. That's OK of course: first things first, but realistically it also makes you unsuitable to manage the NFonTour collection. It simply takes too long. It looks like you've bitten off more than you can chew.
While I, and I'm sure everybody here, appreciate your intent, we also have to conclude that it really doesn't work...
Imo it would be better if the NF's whereabouts, and the resulting photo collection, was managed by somebody else. Actually, for security's sake, by TWO somebodies else (mirrored collections).
To be sure: I am not volunteering, as I cannot guarantee I can spend the time that this project and its participants deserve.
So my question is:
who can take over from Matty? Coordinating the NF's whereabouts, and managing the resulting photo collection (posting them here and on Google Earth, and possibly creating slideshows and (a) coffee table book(s) down the line). And who is prepared to take on the number 2 responsibility, and be the backup, the mirror?
Because if this project continues as is, I predict it will very soon die in beauty...
I'll remove the site from MY hosting, if anyone wants to buy the site that I paid for, PM me.
It's coming down now.

So you want to get rid of the whole thing right away? I understand. OK, so let's do it straight away: please send the photos you collected sofar through Podmailing.com to your own eMail address. You will receive a link in your mailbox. Post that link in a PM to me here, please. I will collect and store them (for 3 months, tops!) until someone volunteers to really, actively, manage the collection.
PM me your email address and I'll send them
Alfred D.
22-03-2008, 13:38
PM'd.
Alfred D.
22-03-2008, 14:18
Got 'm. Thanks.
OK, you guys, I am now the temporary recipient and storage of the NFonTour photo collection. Looking for a no. 2 mirror for security. Any volunteers?
If you want to send me NFonTour photos, then send me full-res originals please. They won't fit a mailbox, so you had better upload/'send' them to your own email address using Podmailing.com. You will then receive a link in your mailbox. Please PM me that link and we're all set.
Matty, no offense meant
Hang on, are you saying you've just taken over the organization of this tour? Sorry mate, but this was arranged before you were even on the forum. Mattyh agreed to sort out the site and is, as far as I can see, doing a good job of it.
Let's get the facts straight. The Nifty Fifty has been to one location so far. There are ten photos. (Not much of a collection yet). Mattyh got the photos three days ago and said he would put them up this afternoon. If it takes a few days, or even a few weeks to get the photos up, it's not a problem. This was meant to be a long-term thing. We have plenty of time.
I think for you to come along and tell Mattyh he's not doing his job properly is unnecessary and frankly quite offensive.

Hang on, are you saying you've just taken over the organization of this tour?
No 'mate', better read carefully: I took over the collection and storage TEMPORARILY, asked for a permanent volunteer (who will deliver), and a backup.
Also, I have already posted 'm, in 10 minutes, which is what Matty clearly had problems with.
If you find that 'offensive' then you're finding reality offensive. That's your problem, 'mate'.
Don't like it? Then be my guest and take over.
Matty, you didn't need to give it up :( You were doing a great job. So what if everything wasn't *instant*. People do have lives to lead, and we're all aware of that.
Personally, im another one with a "problem" at how you have tried to handle this situation, in that there WAS no situation in the first place, Mattyh was doing this for the good of the community, he had volunteered his own time, obviously money and effort into doing this and you jump in, say "No offence meant" as if that makes anything you say ok... and take over.
MattyH has a job, has other interested outside TP and at the end of the day there are no deadlines, so why the rush to get the photos online?
Sorry if you find my post seems rude, but, well... i find yours rude so mehh...
Personally id prefer it if MattyH would take control back over this project, and do things in his own time.... But, unfortunately, I expect he will be quite annoyed at this stage and wont be willing to... Darryn.
Guys, it's OK.
It was a previously banned member causing trouble. ;)
Now banned again.
okies sow hat is happening, the site had been removed ( understandably after that insulting piece of $%^& said what he did) but is Matty taking it back over a etc pr what. I agree witht he others, there is no mad rush its a long term project and one that to be honest is better having time taken over than rushed and messed up.
Come back Matty we need ya!
And i think in future if anyone is not happy they should really have a quiet nice word in PM?

Guy's/Girls, Chaps, Togs - (whatever the collective noun is)
I use Pbase, I find it useful, quick and easy & cheap.
I'm more than willing to pay the $23 for 500Mb of disk space (easily expandable) for these photo's if required and we can subdivide the area into Nikon & Canon, then into individual togs etc etc.
I have no limits on my work email so can easily accept photos, or we can have the password passed onto the current receipient of the lens so they can upload their own photo's.

im glad that the trouble maker has been banned, personally i thought everything was perfect the way it was. seemed to be working well, and also matty had only been given the photos a couple days earlier, and everyone has other commitments i.e. work, family...
i dont think anyone expected the photos to be shown within minutes of being passed over, these things take time.
its a shame if this stops now since a generous member lent the nifty fifty, come back matty.
just my opinion..

What a shame, I had just looked at the site this morning and was impressed with it. Hopefully when Matty has had had a read of the thread he'll be happy to take the job back on. Projects like this are long term and there's plenty of time to see the pictures.

I'm not disappointed the need to deal with Alfred.D has now been removed. FWIW I tend to agree with those who have said that this is a long term project without time limits.
I'm seriously impressed with the photos posted so far. Its clear the lens has been put to good use. And that makes me happy. So keep at it people. I look forward to more.

LOL - I have a couple of Gb space on their already - I was proposing a separate space.
BUT
Welcome back Matty. I've had a couple of 'busy' weeks, so can understand the pressures.
Oh and the lens is currently in Swindon. The portrait shots were my first ever studio shots, but as someone said it was a portrait lens :D
It's off to the Isle of Man on Friday.
P.S. Dunno what you'c done to the nifty50 site - but it's much quicker to load
Dunno mate, if it works then it's a miracle, anything else is a bonus ;)
For the most part, the site is back online now, with a new theme (feel free to suggest an alternate if you think a different one is better :) )
I'm temporarily hosting the photos in my photobucket account, but as soon as I've confirmed with LeeP that the FTP stuff is online, I'll transfer them to there and hopefully will be able to make them "clickable" for bigger images, as they're a bit small at the moment.
If anyone's got any suggestions, feel free I'm more than open to constructive crit :)
Again, just want to thank you all for your support. (last moment of softness, otherwise someone might take my man card away :D)
Aye, it's done matey.

If you need backup space the offer of a pbase account is still open. £13 for 500Gb for a year is still cheap.
Cheers & thanks
Oh and you're all gits. I didn't think I needed another lens but I've added this lens or it's 1.4 brother to my purchase list :D
Wow, there's a whole lot of kindness on these forums. Glad I (recently) became a member of Talk Photography even if I have been a little quiet in the sidelines :)
I thought something was strange when Alfred D started railroading the show. MattyH, nice one for picking this back up again. Also, were you going to offer up your personal 50mm or were the Nikon folk still going for a collective purchase?
If you're still going to buy one I'd like to help rekindle the passion on this project (after the rude interruption) and match Superstat's kind offer and contribute £5 to the Nikon fund. Please let me know.
Loving the site and photos so far, what an awesome concept :D
^^ I'm hoping we can raise enough to buy one, cos i really do need mine, but I will offer it if nothing is forthcoming
Well my £5 is certainly forthcoming, please PM me where you'd like it sent to!
I wasn't going to collect anything til we knew we had enough to buy one, otherwise if it never happens there's a pot of money with nothing to buy :)
Why not start collecting? With the condition that if you don't get enough by a certain date it either goes to a charity of you choosing, or donate it to TalkPhotography itself. Just my 2p's worth :)
Hahaha, good point!. Well mark me down as being good for it, then if you get enough volunteers PM and collect. I'm sure you'll get a few more random acts of generosity on here since you've decided to take up the reigns again.
What's the theoretical total fund for the Nikon Nifty looking like now?

I hate it when people come along and just try and take over something that was working perfectly fine in the first place! Well done for booting his arse off, and thank you mary/Mary(!?) for the re-takeover!
We'll have out Nikon soon... whoop whoop!
Added you to the Nikon list :)
Also how much on average is it costs to send the lens? What to know so I can put it into the first post :)

Royal Mail Special Delivery 1pm up to 1Kg with £500 insurance (can't have any less on SD) is £6.
I would have thought that would cover it.
I'd dying to know what happened with Alfred? Can't seem to find the posts on this thead.. By the way I think this is a great idea, can't wait to see the results.

Last I heard, he'd been banished. And quite rightly too.

I've now boxed the lens, wrapped in bubblewrap, in it's original box, in yet another box with foam cut out around it. I thought it would be a bit more robust.
Postage was £5.25 special delivery

Morning Gents
I'll be done with the Canon Nifty today. Who's up for it next, as I think there is still a week or so before it's trip abroad?
Had a walk around London yesterday evening but stumped by a fundamental lack of tallent it would seem :(
Just caught up with this thread. Cool idea! Bookmarked the site to look at later
Just made a few additions / adjustments to the site.
Made one of the galleries (Mikes NYC trip) Visible, but I've got to change all the links tonight, once I've uploaded all the images I've got onto our Flickr Account.
Just a reminder, It'd be really handy if all new images could be uplaoded to flickr directly, with a max image size the same as the forum rules (800 px on the longest side, 200kb max size)
PM me for the password
 I've just updated the site, made the galleries visible and generally had a bit of a sort.
Hope you like: http://www.nifty50ontour.co.uk

Finally got my dates firmed up for a trip back to Egypt so I can take the Canon nifty to Luxor and Cairo between the 6th and the 16th of October if it's available. The shots posted so far are great with plenty of variety to keep folks coming back:thumbs:
Nifty fifty wingin it's way to me and it needs to be with Rusk by 6th May. I'm based near Manchester and I work a lot in hospitals so I'm hoping to chip in with something a little bit different. Oh now the pressure is on!

I live in Manchester so once your finished with the 50 maybe we could meet up for me to collect it to save you the posting cost.
