I can't think of a better way to reach great locations than along a green-lane in a 4x4...

Have you tried walking boots? Much more environmentally friendly and gets you fit too.

Makes life easier I suppose - no offence but a big lump of Land Rover is the last thing I want to see whilst hiking around Snowdonia

Having said that shot 3 works well, nice lighting

fantastic stuff, beautifully shot

and hillwalking girl & simonkit you need to realise that not everybody is fit enough to walk around on welsh hillsides for full day or inclined to suffer the miseries of wind, damp and hypothermia associated with it, neither are we willing to subject the whole family including young children to it. 4x4s allow normal (generally unfit) and disabled people as well as those with busy family lives to get out into the countryside and to enjoy it too. Walking is also a great part of green laning with 4x4s, with many road sections being walked before driven to ensure ground conditions are passable. The 4x4s give you somewhere sheltered to retreat to and a quick way out if the weather turns bad.

You stick to your boots if that's what YOU like and YOU can do, dont stop others from enjoying the countryside too.

a big lump of land rover was probably the last thing the eight DoE kids were expecting to see 10 years ago, we picked them up in mid wales, 2 miles in from the southern end of the strata florida trail, about 5pm, end of october, dark, misty, raining, they had no food, water or camping gear, they'd gone out from their camping farmhouse into forestry commission at 11am and got lost, they couldnt even tell us where they were on the map. Yes they'd be much better off as a pile of bones.

green lanes are ancient roads, the construction of them is totally different to footpaths, failure to maintain vehicle traffic results in rapid decay of the track with it becoming impassable for horses and walkers due to them becoming overgrown by bushes or thick grass, the vegitation results in waterlogging due to the accumulated dead vegetation, soil accumulation and the lack of wind drying. Next time you're complaining about 4x4s why dont you try walking some of the tracks around here that have been downgraded by an indifferent council, landgrabbing farmers and the militant walkers groups (just dont forget to bring your machete, chainsaw and waders).

We have tried walking some of these tracks after they have been torn up by 4 x4's. I have no objection to disabled people or people with health problems enjoying the countryside by vehicle, but what I do object to is the hobby of tearing around the mountain sides and moors eroding all the tracks and paths, and destroying the peace and quiet for others.

You say you wouldn't subject your children to the misery of walking in the countryside. Our children actually were brought up to enjoy the outdoors, and it never did them any harm.

We also have rescued children on their DOE award and have responded by helping them to read their maps, and checking that they got back to base safely.

As for the land grabbing farmers we have always found them to be very friendly and helpful. Who do you think restores most of the footpaths and tracks, it's people like us who survey them for the Countryside commission and not 4 x 4 drivers.

By all means stick to your 4 x4 but please don't destroy the environment for the rest of us.

Funny how threads get dragged off topic by people who cant help themselves...we know you like hill walking, but its about bulbs photo's.

Wookie,

Guessing you're a 4x4 owner then..

Nothing against 4x4s, see them all the time at the supermarket & never give them a second look. Not particularly interested in debating the issue, not really the place & we both have our opinions & neither will change.

Unfortunately all my experiences with 4x4s in the countryside have been negative ones, hence my opinion.

It's a shame your kids won't get to enjoy what's one of the truly special things about the UK - its unspoilt countryside, lets all hope it remains so, only then can we continue to capture it's true beauty on camera !!

If his photos thread is about Snowdonia, why do all the photos just feature his 4 x 4? I am leaving this thread now - its getting daft.

Simon - I couldn't agree more. I am glad that there are still some of us who really enjoy the countryside.:agree:

yes I'm a land rover owner, and actually its what has got me out into places like snowdonia, the beacons and the peaks . . . and got me out enjoying walking too.

I'm just saying that knocking 4x4s and saying walking must be better is not 100% true. For some people walking is great, for some its not, and 4x4s give an option to get out there, quite a vigorous option actually, but with shelter and rest facilities built in. If 4x4s aren't your thing then fine just dont knock other people's way of enjoying the countryside ( . . . which is not "unspoilt", most of this country is a man made and managed landscape resulting from deforestation, hunting parks, enclosure farmland, power generation, forestry and mining).

Cheers guys, thanks for the comments on the photos!

Lib, my thought are the same about no4. Might redo it...

Wookie, Paulc, nice one  Paul H, nice to seen someone recognises it!

I'll not be drawn on the 4x4 v ramblers debate, except to say live and let live. There's no point in allowing myself to be drawn into an argument with such a narrow-minded person, particularly when they come out with such patronising comments (my walking boots would have done a great job in that river...)

cracking photo's

as you know, debate with ramblers is a pointless exercise, the only footprint they have is a muddy one, no carbon footprint to get to their favourite walks at all

most of the former RUPPs in somerset are getting impassible now because vehicles dont use them, go figure :bang:

Not necessarily better, just a different way....................
Why are the bobble hat brigade so blinkered in there attitude to others who enjoy the great outdoors
These lads are entitled to be there every bit as much as you are

Oh, really nice pictures too - never been to Snowdonia, maybe pop down one day in my Range Rover ;)
